Hi, so I'm back after an extended vacation from all things Warhammer, as I'm kind of getting interested in it again.

I'm planning on selling off my painted IG army (the new codex sucks imo, but that's another discussion entirely) and buying some Chaos dudes.
Yes I know that the Chaos codex is pretty terrible too (yet another imnsho but again this is another discussion) but these are more for collecting and painting than actually playing, since I don't enjoy the actual game all that much. (Lots of not so humble opinion here, but for the 3rd time let's keep this away from this topic)

Now I already like Chaos a fair deal, but I hate the new plastic models. If I wanted spiky marines I'd buy some greenstuff and mold spikes on normal Space Marines.

Looking on eBay, I think it's fair to say that it was love at first sight with the old Chaos models.

But the problem is that most of these guys are around $11 a piece. That's kind of ridiculous.

Yes, I know that part of the worth is up to me (i.e. how much do I value them) but even if I totally loved them it's a hard sell at a full squad being $100 +.

So I was wondering, hence the thread title, what the general accepted worth of these dudes are, and if I can somehow get them cheaper.

Thanks,
Vlad

Well, make sure you're looking at completed auctions that sold, not just what people are asking. As a general rule, closing prices on eBay are as close to true fair market value (defined as what a willing buyer would pay to a willing seller with both having a full appreciation of all material facts and neither having a compulsion to buy or sell) as you can find in this world.

Larger lots tend to sell for less per model but are very rare. I would post everywhere you can asking to buy them, but even at a discount prepare to pay about $5 a piece or more for them.

Alright, thank you very much.

I don't mind paying around $5-$7, but more than that is normally a deal breaker. When I finally sell my army I'm going to just post everywhere looking to buy them.

It would help a lot if you told us who are you talking about.

Chaos dudes encompasses a huge amount of models that you could be talking about.

Special characters? Chaos lords? Sorcs? The regular chaos marines?

Also, what edition? "old" is not enough. There are the original chaos models which look quite strange and hardly recognizable when compared to the current marine, and then there are 2nd and 3rd edition marines which are more recognizable.

I have been buying up lots of chaos ebay auctions over the past 3-4months to put my chaos marines army back together after selling it all about 4-5 years ago. I buy regular marines (usually 3rd edition, but some 2nd edition) for about $0.50/marine or up to $1.00/marine, and that is the max I pay. I've been able to get 100+ regular marines (including heavy weapons, special weapons, lightning claw marines, standard bearers, etc) for this price and like I said that includes expensive models like havocs with autocannons/lascannons/heavy bolters/missile launchers. I got 7 missile launcher units (a mix of 2nd and 3rd edition) for $6.

Be patient and you can get some incredible prices.

For rogue trader era "chaos renegades" I would pay 10-15 US Dollars, and 15-25 for chaos renegades WITH heavy weapons. Remember that these models have been Out Of Production for OVER 20 years old.

Bah, the OOP figures which you see on eBay listed for over $10 each are there because they don't sell at that price, especially with a photo of a questionable paint job. And then if they don't have a backpack...

I know I've gone off the deep end for buying antiques one or twice, but being out of print is not a license to ask outrageous prices if the figures are missing backpacks and is going to require stripping.

There's nothing all that Spiky about the current Chaos kits that isn't optional. At most a few of them have horns on their helmets, but otherwise all the various totems, trophy racks and so on are 100% optional.

Well, if you're interested I have some Thousand Sons from 1990, along with some RT renegades lying around. Just PM me about it.

All in all, it depends on the model. An old Noise Marine with the electric guitar and mohawk would go for more than an average Chaos schmuck. I'd say 5-7 bucks for a Chaos Marine from the early-mid 90's, and closer to 10 or more for some of the really rare stuff, like RT era renegades or cult troops like Plague Marines and Thousand Sons.
