While a few threads have occurred recently about some negative comments to people and flaming on certain boards, i thought of something that might/could/probably shouldn't be considered. If the mod's are having issues towards a poster who haven't been obeying the forum rules and they aren't sure if they should ban them or not, they should create a public vote, on which the fellow dakkadakka members vote for approval, the majority of the votes win simply. There are a few bumps and forks in this idea but it could be an option if they mod's have an unsure doubt of banning.

thoughts?

I would guess the current system is just fine, we do not need a DakkaDakka Idol vote by any means.

Public voting is bound to result in a lot of "the fether is banned" results.

I'm more interested in who would be banned by public vote, than allowing an actual public ban vote.

Here's a hypothetical scenario for you: Two people fall out on these boards, the first ,as far as the community is aware, is a curmudgeonly old bastard bloke who occasionally rails about GW and remembers when 'all this were fields', the other, as far as the community is aware, is a teenage girl with an interest in lolicon lesbian anime.

The community, as far as the community is aware, is made up in the huge majority, by fellas, some of whom allow their other brains to rule in all things. I would think the first would be out on his arse in about 2 seconds flat as the huge lobbying (slobbering?) mob of fanbois for said perceived teenage girl all imagined themselves brave knights as they pressed the 'eject button' for the old bastard.

Which one of them was 'wrong' in the argument that had taken place would be irrelevant to the voting, which one of them has the biggest friends list or spams the most threads with smileys and also is perceived to be the girl would be the victor in those cases. In other cases you can certainly see where people who have cultured a 'cult of self' via pure self belief and ego could use said cult to further drive out anyone not 'down with the program'.

I for one, despite having had a clip round the ear on occasion, am very glad of the moderators on this forum, it's a mixed bunch of folks but they come together and produce a level of professionalism that's rarely seen on the interwebs. Mob rule never works, the dakka forums would become a constant witch hunt and certain people would become unrelenting bullies and others would use the opportunity for letting slip their passive aggressive passions to finger point and accuse of sleight to anyone that did not festoon them with adoration. The boards would be deserted wastelands in months. Ever see those nature programs with the amazonian fish caught in the pools in the dry season? As the water began to evaporate, they would turn on the other types of fish, then on their own kind.

Having spend several years as a moderator myself for very large site, I am a firm believer that the best form of government for these things is a benevolent dictatorship.

I dunno, I like the older blokes around here. They remind me of how great it is to be a youthful and sprightly teenager.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

What? I *do* appreciate having people like Frazzled and H.B.M.C. around. You know how sickening it is to go on MySpace and see frothing hordes of pimply teenage guys and camwhores? I like Dakka because there's such a broad range of people from different age groups and countries.

I know that their would be some negative problems with this idea and i know that the moderators are extremely experienced and a good general bunch but this 'idea' is similar to democracy voting, so that its based on the individual persons feelings towards the one person to which is being banned or not. Not a choice between two people, if their is 2 people to be banned, each person would have a individual poll for example, you log in a pop-up would show up:

"X" has been considered to be "Y" in the forums and has been put on the public polls for "Z" charges, simply vote yes if you wish for "X" to continue being in this forum, if not vote no.

This is just a quick example and the "real" one would be worded more correctly...
so the public voting would be on one person (by choice of moderators, this wouldn't be viewed at lightly) and the result wouldn't been shown to avoid negative reactions.

thoughts?

But is this your forum? DCMs have certainly got some small stake there, mods as well but ultimately this is private property and that's what your missing on what your suggesting. We are all camping out in Yakface and Legoburner's backyard, they can drop kick who they like because this bit of the interwebs belongs to them (or just yakface since he bought it? but you see my point).

Half the crazies camping in the backyard don't get to evict the othe half of the crazies camping in the Admin's back yard.

Now lets get back to playing the game, just like Jervis wants us playin it!!

Somewhere in south-central England.

Legoburner and Yakface are the legal owners of the forum, so their word is THE LAW, because they would bear responsibility for any legal shenanigans that might arise (libel, for example -- God forbid that it ever would!)

The Moderator team operates under the broad principles laid down by the owners. Obviously we agree with these principles or we would not be moderators.

Despite that, there is enough diversity among the team to ensure that group think does not occur.

Considerable discussion goes on behind the scenes about topics such as permanent bans and other administrative matters. It isn't government by diktat.

The number of permanently banned users is very very small compared to the total user-base. The number of suspensions and even warnings is fairly small considering the amount of traffic.

That is partly because Dakka has a fairly clear posting culture, maintained by the users as well as moderators. Newcomers soon either learn how to fit into it or leave for sites which match their personality better.

This is as it should be.

Obviously there are frequent points of friction; that's unavoidable when you have such a large and diverse community operating in the difficult communication environment of non-real-time text with effective anonymity. The issue is not to avoid all arguments, it is to stop them being nasty.

If a particular forum gets a lot of complaints, the team look into it and take appropriate action. Such action may not be obvious, it may be simply a higher ‘patrol rate’ for a while, in order to calm the situation down.

Finally, Dakka contains a lot of different forums. It has as much to offer the modeller or the fluff fan as the rule enthusiast. The perception of a problem in one forum should not destroy the overall usefulness of the site.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Incidentally, what kind of personality would you say this forum 'fits'? I can certainly see stronger support for one side of a controversial issue; the Obama administration, for instance, and there are a few 'elitist' types around, but I don't think that Dakka is designed to fit a specific kind of person.

There are certainly specific types it doesn't fit. For example, Gabe in this strip.

Here's a list of adjectives which I think describe the ideal of Dakka though perhaps not its total reality:

Polite, thoughtful, supportive, inclusive, open to ideas, literate/eloquent, knowledgeable, not arrogant, curious, GSOH, considerate of others.

Political and religious inclinations don't necessarily have anything to do with it.
