Just finished my first planetstrike game as the attacker, my chaos vs my buddy's Raven Guard. Posted a battle rep in the appropriate forum, but I wanted to make special note here.

He had surrounded one of his bastions with impassible terrain, leaving just a single lane to allow entry. The lane extended out towards the center of the board. What it did in the end, while it kept my ground-based reinforcements out for the most part, also kept his reserves from supporting where he needed them to.

So this is a post to say that you must keep in mind not only keeping the enemy off of your objectives, but allowing yourself to defend them! Don't block yourself!

Haven't read the batrep yet, but it sounds like he had a solid plan to me. The castles and forts of old were often surrounded by impassable terrain on all but one side. This kept anything but artillery from wreaking havoc. I wouldn't say that his plan was the best if he couldn't bring in reserves to his battered front lines (the lane leading to the bastion) and he couldn't keep the enemy from marching up to the entrance and taking over with the fortresses own firepower.

Maybe he needed a indomitable fortress with enough room to deep strike units into the courtyard if he needed to. That way, he could just move his whirlwinds out of the way and drop in an assault squad or terminator squad on his next turn...hoping that you didn't get there first!

personally, if the person is trying to completely deny objectives with impassible terrain, they're just playing to win. The point of PS is to be creative, but not overly cheese, with your layouts!

That being said, yea, sectioning off bastions with IT is a pretty bad idea. Seeing as most of the things that will blow the building will be guns anyway >.>

How can something that is bad/won't work also be cheese? Deploying terrain in such away keeps your bastion relatively safe from enemy assualts at the expense of hindering the mobility of your troops defending the bastion and doing little in the way against ranged attacks.

One game like that against Tyranids with flesh hooks and he won't deploy like that anymore.
