Focused Fire Warrior

My first planetstrike game as a defender came this weekend, 2000 points of orks holding out against a combined force made up of 1000 points of CSM and 1000 points of tyranids.
Objectives: 3 bastions & 1 bunker.
Terrain: Moderately dense city terrain. Lots of fences, buildings, and storage tanks, very little area terrain.
Defender's strategems: Krak Attack, Las Mase, Escape Hatch, and Minefields.
Defender's (my) forces:
10 Nobz (painboy, cybork, 2x pk, Waagh banner, bosspole, 8x 'eavy armor) + PK Warboss - Bastion
Same as above, in a Trukk - Reserves
30 shoota boyz - Bastion
15 lootas - Bastion
15 lootas - Bunker
3 killa kans with big shootas - Reserves
3 killa kans, 2 big shootas, 1 skorcha - Reserves
3 Warbuggies with big shootas - Reserves
Setup considerations: The last thing I wanted "Without Number" Gaunts hugging my bastions, so I deployed a little closer to midfield than I otherwise would have with the three bastions, as I had elected not to take drop zone denial. To help with this, I dropped a couple of lines of fences near the closest board edge, spaced out so that most squads would take a difficult terrain test two turns in a row even with a run in between. The second thing I didn't want was a lot of deep strikers, so I was hoping I could mention how "awesome" Krak Attack was and hope they heard, plus I scattered the terrain out enough to make it theoretically possible to mishap almost anywhere a squad targeted to land. All three bastions were were close enough together that the Nobz in the center bastion could pop out with their stratagem and counter-assault with a vengeance if absolutely needed, although I didn't plan far enough ahead to have another readily available squad to occupy that bastion after the Nobz vacated it. Will next time. Dropped the Las Mase out in front of the three bastions in a T shape (rolled 8 sections). Just to make sure all my eggs were not in one basket and in an attempt to split the attackers' forces the bunker went in a corner opposite the near center-ish bastions.
Attacker's strategems: Darken the Skies and (later revealed after the game, never got used) Sustained Assault for a squad of the tyranids' Genestealers.
Attackers list:
15-20 Gaunts (Without Number)
15-20 Gaunts (Without Number)
Winged Dakka Tyrant
10 Genestealers (unsure as to biomorphs)
10 Genestealers (ditto)
10 Chaos Marines (w/icon, fist, melta, flamer)
10 Chaos Marines (w/icon, fist, melta, flamer)
Sorcerer in termi armor with Familiar, Warptime, Lash of Submission
5 Terminators
Defiler
With Darken the Skies and 4 objectives my opponents score 12 templates for their firestorm. No less than 10 were dropped on the Bastion containing my Nobz (intimidation is a beautiful thing, people hate Nobz) and then the Nobz themselves after the 8th or so managed to destroy the Bastion (and one of my stratagems in the process). I lost 2 Nobz to the templates, and wound on the Warboss as well, plus the squad had gone to ground in the crater of the bastion's remains. The other two templates aimed at the Loota bastion, but didn't succeed in damaging it.
Attackers turn 1: All reserves save for the Defiler and a squad of Genestealers arrive. The short table edge closest to the bunker is chosen for their drop zone, but in an attempt to avoid the range of Lootas and the possibility of Snikrot popping up behind them (not in my list, see earlier point on loving intimidation), everything is deep striking! (except maybe the Defiler, not sure if it can without Heavy Drop strategem). I get a little worried at this point as to how bad this game could hurt, but I shouldn't have. I was ready to throw the Krak attack out against the first thing to come down... drumroll ensued... followed by a confused unit of Shoota Boyz wondering what that series of thuds on the roof was: 5 Terminators and a Sorcerer that are accustomed to having icons to guide by. The Hive Tyrant swoops down in front of the Shoota Boyz bastion, ready to open fire on the Nobz ducked down in their crater, and takes a wound from the Krak Attack. The remaining 20 marines play it a little safer, one squad landing by the Loota Bastion, one landing by the Loota bunker. One gaunt takes a Krak shot to the head on the way down, but otherwise both squads arrive safely, one on either side of the Las Mase defending my remaining Bastions. The Genestealers that arrived this turn drift a little too close to my Nobz, and by the mishap are placed in the far corner, off away from everything. Two more Nobz are wounded and another two die to the one squad of Gaunts who were in range to shoot, one of the injured goes down to the Tyrant's hail of fire (A PowerKlaw, sadly), and the Warboss takes his second wound from the same. Marines fire their Meltaguns into the Lootas' buildings, but fail to damage them.
Defender's turn 1: The Trukk of Nobz arrives opposite the drop zone, and runs right up behind the Marines on that flank, disgorging its contents, who later wipe out that squad in close combat, taking one wound in return. The Warbuggies and Kan squadron with a Skorcha appear from the attacker's drop zone, lining up shots on the Marines approaching the Lootas' bunker, doing a wound or two. The Lootas help out in their own defense, and manage to kill a couple more, including the Icon bearer. Perfect time to see that 11 rolled on a leadership test, right after the ability to reroll died. Board edge, here they come. At midfield, Lootas and Shoota Boyz try to give the Hive tyrant a reason to duck and help their Nob buddies out, causing all of 1 more wound in the process. 2+ save on a T6 model is a pain when you aren't rolling well against it.
Attackers turn 2: The fleeing Marines head off the board, and the table is temporarily free of Chaos models. Sadly enough, the remaining Genestealers fail to appear on a 2+ roll, but the Defiler arrives and lines up a clean Battle Cannon shot on the Trukk Nobz with no intervening cover. The scatter goes wide, and misses the last Nob by less than an inch. The Genestealers run up between two storage buildings, and I pop the minefield there, forcing them to continue through the field or take an extra turn or two to go back and around. A couple more Nobz in the crater take wounds from the horde of Gaunts and the Tyrant, but they're still there when the dust settles, and there's a Tyrant deserving some PowerKlaws in their sights. Meanwhile, without other more important threats, the Defiler is already being targeted by all of the Lootas, and probably isn't going to be afforded a cover save by it's location, as it landed in the edge the planned Kill Zone for my Lootas in order to get the shot at the Nobz. Disheartened by their fate thus far, and sensing a sound defeat, my opponents offer their surrender during the meal break before my second turn.
All things considered, with two squads of WoN Gaunts and being able to bring back one squad of Genestealers, the 'nids could have easily given me a hard time trying to clear them off of the objectives, and the Defiler is not easily brought down even with two squads of Lootas. However, I believe I could have cleared the 'Nids by turn 4, and moved to surround the objectives from the outside to keep the gaunts from reaching them, so the match would be decided by the Defiler going head to head with the Trukk of Nobz, and whether or not it could have cleared through them (with possible Genestealer assistance) soon enough to capture an objective and blow a hole in the defense ring around a second one wide enough for a gaunt squad to run through without being taken back off during my last turn. A fun game all around, and a shame it didn't go better for the attackers. Live (or in this case die) and learn!
