Last weekend when the Space Hulk craze was going on I was without the internet, waiting for my new router from Verizon (FIOS is fantastic BTW). I made sure I was at my local GW store at 10am when they opened up. Me and many others managed to crash GW's website minutes after the page went up.

It was a goo 20-30 minutes before I was able to log on and order my Space Hulk game.

As I was leaving the new manager handed me a bag with the new water cup and new paint tray in it for my troubles!

Say what you will about their pricing....(my thoughts are this is still a rather inexpensive hobby when you look at the longevity of the mini's)...but my local store always goes out of it's way to take care of me and help out.

Hats off to the GW store in Arundel Mills!

I got a necron phalanx and they included an extra sprue for the front and back of the 'lith but no sprue for the sides. I called them up and a week later they sent me a whole new monolith! I ended up buying sides from ebay for $14 and now I have two monoliths

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Inexpensive hobby? *snorts* The prices are absurd, which is why I only buy from a place that gives me 30%+ discounts.

As for good experiences, my good GW experiences all come from GWUS, the best and fastest mail order service on the planet.

I went in asking where they kept their Eldar junk, and the guy was more then happy to show me the new Space Marine sets. He was really enthusiastic too.

LoL try buying sisters of battle in a GWS store, had a guy keep telling me how AWSOME and TOTALLY cool immolators were to transport sisters...

Till I pointed out it only has a transport capacity of 6.

I dont mind enthusiasm but blind kool-aid drinking faith bothers me.

If you are so piss broke that you have to spend every waking hour on Dakka posting about how expensive it is maybe you should find another hobby? Oh wait, it wouldnt matter what hobby it was...

AS for price, I agree with OP. Im not going to gripe for sake of griping, prices are fine, if they charged less they would be in a crappier state financially. Im still waiting for the day when a "GW IS OVERPRICED" thread and a "GW IS GOING BANKRUPT!" thread collide and the world implodes from all the common sense.

As for good customer service, while the mail order is of course 100% retail the service has always been good when I used it. Locally service is meh, but thats because its an indy ran by college kids.

The GW on-line has great service that's friendly and direct. The store I used to visit on the other hand, sadly the great staff has been replaced by under age tools who take the company policy to heart and aren't as into the hobby as they should like normal people. Yes they like the hobby, but no they aren't doing a great job at it.

Reminds me of the store manager who refused to honor the return policy because he already had those items in stock, and then told me and an acquaintance who meet at the store to swap some items that we couldn't "wheel and deal" in front of his store.

No matter how many times I remember that toon, the quality of their 1-800 service staff reminds me of what Games Workshop CAN be.

In Chicago, at least, the three stores I've been too have been really good. The Bunker has friendly staff and Palatine where I frequent is really good. Good culture there. They set up plenty of events and things. Of course they try to sell stuff, but are never overwhelming. If you ask for advise on what to purchase they are usually pretty helpful.

I haven't had experience with the 800 staff. I would like to someday cause I hear only good things.

The GW staff at the Adelaide Rundle store are very friendly, know their stuff and are a pleasure to deal with.

And Nomog - dont know if its 'an inexpensive hobby', but with the amount of fun I have with it painting, playing, and whining about codexes I mean discussing valid points with likeminded people - its easily better value than my other hobbies - like fishing (where I get to go once a year, and spend on travel, bait, food, buying fish cos I suck at it etc).
