I'm curious if anyone is aware of GW locking accounts on their website to keep them from ordering. I can log in and add stuff to my cart, but I'm not able to follow through with my purchases. My last five orders had to be called in because I couldn't 'check-out' my cart.

It's not the '18+ years old to place and order' either, I checked that.

Sounds like bad coding somewhere.

I was doing a bitz order for the store on the website, and had that happen. Put it down to me screwing something up as it was the first time I'd used the website for an order. Like you, was able to put stuff in the cart, but not pay for it.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Well, at least I'm not the only one. It's still very annoying. I had to have my girlfriend create and account so I could advance order Space Hulk. :(

Same here. Try switching browsers. It doesn't support IE very well.

I have. I've used IE7, IE8, Firefox, Chrome and Safari on three different computers (work, home, GF's laptop). It never works, same thing happens every time. It's because of this that I think GW is locking accounts.

You know, there are other stores that don't have that problem.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I must ask cheese, why so many shameless plugs for that store? Some kind of commision?

As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time.

War Store dude. Neal is the 40K version of Pulp Fiction's Mr. Wolf. You WILL get your product. On time. On price. In condition.

A bit off topic, but never use IE for internet.

On topic: I don't think GW would be locking accounts, it's like them saying "Don't buy this". It's probably a glitch on their side or something like that. Because I can't see them actually refusing the oportunity to sell something.

Yeah I made the horrid mistake of upgrading to IE8 not long ago. After struggling with that waste-of-space program for about two weeks I made the complete switch to Chrome. Such a fast browser!!!!

I like to order from GW's online store for various reasons. 1) I it's quick and easy and I'm not handing my credit card info out to someone over the phone. 2) I have access to direct order only items. 3) I don't have to concern myself with whom I'm interacting with over the phone getting my information wrong. 4) Free shipping. Regardless of the current promotion, most of my orders are over $100 5) The MOST important one... I know I'm getting the most current release of a product. I've ended up with 'old stock' one to many times to make my purchases ANY other way than going through GW's online store.

I will not ever purchase from Maelstrom Games because I'm not going to deal with an over sea company should something go wrong and I'm not going to wait for customs.

If things keep going the way they're going and I have to communicate with a rep regardless then I may start dealing with Neil at The War Store.

I don't have anything against Neil or Maelstrom. Everyone has their own way of doing things and mine happens to be GW's online store.

I'm sure there a few others, but Maelstrom and The War Store are two of the very trustworthy ones. Maelstrom being way more awesome if you're in Australia though.

Then I hope you enjoy you life in the previous century.

For the rest of us, who have moved on into modern times, and don't even know what you're talking about when you mention giving CC details over the phone (I've never done that), we'll enjoy our massive discounts, speedy deliveries, free shipping and excellent customer service while you suffer GW prices.

Dealing with an overseas company should something go wrong? I had an Imperial City box go missing around Christmas, during a UK postal worker's strike. I contacted Maelstrom after the New Year and had a replacement box for free within a week.
Dealing with customs? I've never had customs do anything to any order I have ever made, besides charge stupidly high import duty on an order we made over AUD$1000. As long as our orders are below $1000, we never have to deal with this.

So either you've had some very bad (and atypical) experiences in the past, or you're talking about things that you think are going to happen, despite not actually having experienced any of them.

I'm sure every country has at least one favored internet retailer.
Aussie: Maelstrom has a good rep
US: Warstore (and others-I've just had interactions with Neal)
Canada: Great Canadian miniatures.

The only issues I would see are following with phone calls if needed, currency changes (which can be an advantage), shipping times, and taxes (same to same).

Despite all the plugging MG gets (and its really only from one or two posters) they're decent enough to purchase from as long as you are willing to wait longer than their advertised shipping times and can capitalize on a weak pound in conjunction with a 17% or over sale.

However from my experience I was more or less lied to by them and felt like they were joshing me around since they split and re-split my order a couple of times and then failed to answer a query about why the order hasn't been shipped on the date their e-mail specified.

Having used bitkingdom last week, I now have bought from four great American stores (thewarstore, bitkingdom, superherogameland, and rattleheadgames) - bitkingdom and thewarstore are the best especially for us Americans since from my experience they ship out the same day you order which is much more impressive than waiting nearly a month for your shipment. Unless MG has an awesome sale and the pound starts to fall; its best to use thewarstore/ebay stores/bitkingdom for your purchases in the USA.

Did you order the Imperial Strongpoint?
My order that included that took an extra couple weeks, and in the end I got all the individually packaged boxes that made it up.
My impression was they were unable to get more and had to wait for the separate items to fill my order.
So I was patient.

Did they split the order and ship, or were you eyeballing their site frequently and seeing changes?
Besides, what does that have to do with anything? Did you get your stuff or not? Number of packages hurts their costs, not yours.

I guess I am more patient than others, but I usually give an extra week after they tell me before I get concerned. Then again, I am more laid back than most.

A new day, a new time zone.

You can choose to buy from whoever you want, but if you say, 'I'm not buying from them,' and then make up reasons why you won't, instead of, y'know, actually giving a real reason, expect to be called on it.

Why do I need any reason other than 'I chose not to deal with a foreign distributor'? It's my prerogative who I chose to buy from and I find it utterly pathetic that I need to defend myself for doing such.

Nope missed out on the Stronpoint, ordered over $200 worth of various GW and hobby stuff one of which was direct GW only. On their site they have a questionnaire form, I asked about my order since it was about a weak and a half in the 'in process' phase (their FAQ states that out of stock items take 2-3 days to restock). After asking about the order's status they split it up only to find a few days later they recombined it again. A total of about two weeks after I placed the order, I wrote an e-mail asking when it'd be shipped. They responded that it'd be shipped either that day or the next, a couple of days passed and nothing so I sent another e-mail asking what was up (in a good tone mind you, not wise to piss off people you buy from) and didn't get any response, wrote another query and got another e-mail saying that it'd be shipped in a couple of days which it did only after spitting up my order again (the GW direct item was shipped later by itself).

All in all more hassle I've had then with other stores including Ebay ones (macpac51 is a great Ebay store with prices sometimes cheaper than anywhere else since he starts up many auctions at 0.00 and that includes free shipping) but MG still got the job done although their FAQ could be updated since it took substnatially longer than 2-3 days to restock and it seemed like they were pulling my chain by splitting my order three times....then again that could just be the cynic in me. Overall disappointing but I understand they moved to new location and had a 17% off sale, just not the best of experiences for a first time customer especially since I mainly plunged into them after all the great feedback here on Dakka.

Shameless plug for the Warstore--

Since my FLGS shut down, I've been using nothing but the Warstore. It's nice, and he can be reached at pretty much any reasonable hour to discuss an issue with your order.

And any issue with your order, WILL be fixed quite nicely.

I just wish he could do Forge World orders better than he does, but eh.

I am one of those that have had an actual and personal bad experience with Maelstrom. I pre-ordered the IG Codex along with a copy of the 2009 Catalog on April 30th. Order went into and out of the shipping process multiple times according to their website, both items were listed as "in stock" with more than 5 copies each, from May 2nd until the day they claimed it was shipped, May 12th. Supposedly the books were sent separately. I have contacted them several times since but no refund or sign that any product was shipped or that a replacement shipment was made. I live in the USA, I have gotten about 22 packages (books, minis, CDs and DVDs) shipped from the UK in this same time period, most arrived in less than a week.

Maybe I am just cursed, since I have had order issues with macpac51 and The Warstore too (Neal did deal with it in a timely and professional manner).

Ironically, GW did send me an IG codex though, which was sent by accident instead of my copy of Planetstrike. GW apparently had a case or three of IG codexes too close to the PS cases, because I was not the only one that got the wrong book. As long as GW keeps the free shipping at $15 or more, I will probably continue to order directly from them except for the occasional big order, where a discount will be more noticeable, or for OoP stuff, which I do tend to buy too much of.

I may be blunt, but at the end of the day I am trying to help. I find your concerns with ordering from online retailers to be both inaccurate and filled with really clichéd pre-21st century fears of ordering online. Now as I said, if you had had bad experiences in the past, that's fine, but were they with the companies we so often plug, or with a different company? Maybe I'm just lucky - I've never had an eBay order go south and end up out of pocket, I've never had a trade over this website go badly, and any mistakes I've had with online orders to all the various shops I've made purchases at have been corrected very quickly (with the clear exception of Forge World - but everyone has problems with them).

Your refusal to 'advance' to where it seems that the rest of us are seems archaic to me, and in truth you are only hurting yourself by suffering GW's absurd prices.

Now clearly, as I can see from Fraz's message, you chose to flame me rather than respond as to why you hold such mistrust at online retailers. I would expect that you would attempt to answer in a more useful fashion this time around.
