Just finished my first two DKoK models that weren't test models. Still need to base them but I think I'm going to wait until I finish the whole squad and do them all at once. Thoughts and opinions welcome.

DKoK Sergeant, the butt of his lasgun broke off and attempts to fix it did not go well so I just decided to leave it, not ideal but you have to work with what you have and it is the only arm you get with the sergeant rank on the shoulder.

DKoK Trooper

The rest of the squad is close to being done, hoping to finish them up this week and move onto another squad.

*Edit* I just finished the rest of the squad today, pictures are fantastic but they're alright. Enjoy and again comments and thoughts are welcome.

Well, think of it like this, the butt of the guys rifle may be gone, but it's not like lasguns have any recoil anyway. He'll, we're not even sure if they actually shoot anything, to be honest. As far as we know, the Imperium's enemies may have just died of laughter once they saw those things. Either way, you shouldn't have to worry too much about it.

Nice painting. Nice'n clean, and I like what you did with the jacket/pants.

Looks good. I think the basing will really bring them to a great finish.

Regarding the sergeant, you could whump up a new wire stock from a bit of paperclip or something.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I'm liking it... gritty and realistic. Those models are great for showing detail, too. Looking forward to seeing a few squads of these done up pretty!

After over a year I've finally gotten back into 40K and started painting again. Getting back into tournament shape and getting everything painted up. Here's the last bunch of stuff I've finished. Will try to update at least once a week if not more often. I've just about got my command squad finished and I have my first Valk finished, I just didn't have time to take a picture of it today.

Pictures are not the greatest ever, I'll try to take better ones in the future, was just rushed today.

Second squad I completed, only problem with painting before you've settled on a final build is that you get things like this, three flamers but I don't think I'll be using a Vet squad with three flamers. Thinking about painting up three extra minis for the squad so I can run it in both configurations.

Close up of two of the models from "Blue" squad. I'm painting the bed rolls of each squad different so I can tell them apart.

Close up of two more models in the squad, for some reason I usually theme each of my squads with theme of what they have killed recently, this squad has a "We just shot up some Eldar" theme going.

SUPER close up of the Serg, you can really see all of the imperfections this close, mold line I didn't quite remove entirely, etc. I'm not a great painter and I paint more because I don't like seeing a gray sea on the table rather than really getting any enjoyment out of it so table top quality is fine with me. Finding with Forge world that sometimes removing all the mold lines requires removing all of the detail in that area and I just don't have the time to use green stuff to rebuild details I have to scrap off because for some reason Forge World is unable to use a mold properly about a fourth of the time.

Chimera I finished, this was the first one I finished so it's a bit heavy on the rust.

So this was kind of a fun Chimera, I built it for my Psyker Battle Squad, I figured their Chimera would have all kinds of Imperial Symbols and Purity Seals (I need to add more I think) and then I added the chain around the hatches, because really if they get possessed you don't want some daemon crazed psykers popping out of your Chimera.

This was the second Chimera I did, I was happier with the rust this time around and the tread dirt.

First Russ I did, I LOVE the Plasma russ Executioner variants, best one IMHO. This one without Sponsons.

And my second one with Sponsons. I sometimes take both in a squad but usually just take this one by itself, I've found that generally they either don't die or get killed in close combat where having a second one to suck up damage doesn't tend to work as well as it does vs shooting.

Apologies if i offend anyone by bumping this up!

I am starting myself a wee DKOK Force and i really like what you have got going on here. What range of paints do you use as thats currently whats stopping me, i have a few DKOK commisars and some stripped steel legion troopers lying around but not sure on colour schemes.

If you could share your paints used and techniques on the Russ' and Chimera's

I love your first chimera, the rusty one, it's wicked. I love the realistic world war I - esque feel to the infantry.

I bought DKoK and I empathise with you on the gun butt. They are very brittle models I've had 2 gun barrels snap on me so far.

I've been lazy recently and not posted the new stuff I've finished. I'll try and get up everything I've finished recently.

As for paints. I use Vallejo almost exclusively, I like the range of colors and coverage. I use Basalt Grey for the coats on my DKoK. I use an airbrush for the basecoat on them and I found through some research on the Vallejo site that the Basalt Grey in their normal paint line equates to German Grey in their airbrush line. My first troopers had to be redone after finding this little tidbit out.

After that I paint all the armor bits (helm, shoulder pads, gun, etc) black and then dry brush a light grey (forgetting the name right now, I'll check when I get home). After that I go about painting the boots, backpack, and harness a brown color and I'll do a quick highlight with a lighter brown. I paint some boltgun metal on some places such as the breathing tube and parts of the lasgun and then do some odds and end cleaning up and painting some of the lights in the breather units on their chests if they are showing. Then I use Didi's Magic Ink wash over all the models. This does three things, it REALLY lessens the dry brushing (you'd be surprised at how obvious the dry brushing is before this step), defines all the details on the model better by making the recesses dark, and does a good job at hiding any slight imperfections in my painting.

Dull coat with Testors and done. Same technique for the tanks. For the tanks though I use MIG pigments for rust and dirt on the tracks. The first Chimera with the most rust was my first attempt, I thought it was a bit much but not super over the top so toned it down a bit for the rest.

Overall the army is what I would consider slightly above tabletop quality, but I'm not a great painter so it's fairly close to the best I can do. It is very understated though, I've had many opponents not comment on my painting until they've had a chance to take a close look because from a distance it just kind of looks like a gray tide.

So in the past couple months I've finished three Vendetta's, three Hydra Tanks, my command squad, and a Veteran squad. Pictures below.

These all have the Forgeworld Vendetta conversion kit and ForgeWorld decals, which were a royal PITA to put on.

The Hydra Tanks:

The barrels aren't 100% straight but whenever I fix them under hot water they end up bending back a bit so just leaving them at this point.

I have some small transfers that I may put on the small gold plates on the standard but will get to it later I think.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Not the greatest shots of my Veteran squad but I was rushed tonight. Three Plasma guns and an autocannon. I also magnetized the autocannon so I can switch it out for a lascannon or whatever else I may need to.

I think if you want the resin to stay straight you have to put it in hot water and bend and then stick it in cold water. Like making a sword i suppose. Your insane to be shelling out so much money. I could never do that.

They're the conversion kit from Forgeworld. The kit isn't that expensive and when I looked at other options and the cost/effort involved in putting them together just opted for the kit.

They look great all around, but the only thing that I'm not personally a fan of is the sky blue bedrolls.

If you really want a way to tell the units apart, have you considered painting a designator stripe on the helmets of each squad?

I'm not a massive fan either, I should have used a darker blue honestly but it's more for when squads are bunched up I don't have to squint at the model.

You can paint the bedrolls a darker blue, but you should at least give the helmet stripes a chance.

It can be gorgeous I think, if you use the right colors.

I support the idea posted earlier about the helmet color designation.

My cadians aren't painted very well, but here you can see the helmet stripes: (They don't have guns because they'll eventually become melta-gunners, I just don't have the weapons yet.
