i am very need to 40k and trying to get my ork army started but not sure what type of army i want to run. out of the green tide, fast attack army, or mechanized list what army has the most success? so far i own 2 sets of the AoBR orks and have about 200 bucks to spend on getting the rest of my army started but not sure at all what would give be the most for my money. i like the idea of the speed freak army and mechanized (vehicles being the thing i like about 40k over FB) more then inching 120+ boys across the table. if any one has a list they would like the share with me it would help loads!!
Thanks Dustin

the most successful ork list i have ever used is a dredbash, at 2000 points it looks like this:

Ghazkull
Mek With Kustom Force Field, Burnas, Eavy Armor and Cybork

30 shoota boyz, 3 big shootas, nob with PK and eavy armor
30 shoota boyz, 3 big shootas, nob with PK and eavy armor
30 shoota boyz, 3 big shootas, nob with PK and eavy armor
30 shoota boyz, 3 big shootas, nob with PK and eavy armor

10 grots, runtmaster

11 kommandos, 2 burnas + snikrot

3 kans, rokkits
3 kans, rokkits
3 kans, rokkits

this is tounreys only, in casual play i dont use tis anymore. but i would wall the kans up front, all the boyz behind, snikky from the rear and pop the gahzz waaagh for the suprise 18 inch threat range from all the boys.

Green tide works pretty well with dual kff meks or a kff and ghaz, the kan wall works pretty well too have 9 kans with rokkits or grotzookas and have a kff or 2 hook them up with a 4+ cover save, then march up as many boyz as you can fit behind the kans and they'll get a 4+ for intereving models and if that gets negated by a barrage or something, then they still get the 5+ from the kff if they're close enough. You can scale it down if you need, but you can fit 6 kans and 90 boyz in to a 1k list if you just take them and have a naked kff mek.

I run BW orks, as well as Kan Wall orks (both backed up by lootas and KFF/s).

The BW list tends to win a lot faster/easier, but the Kan wall is more fun.

Guitar string for hoses and wires

Best off starting with Ebay looking for Ork Boyz.. easy to pick up and they are always on there.

Its good that everyone is sending you lists.. just you need a foundation to start yourself off.

Perfect start.. find a mate who wants marine stuff out of Black Reach.. Pay half towards it and get Warboss, 5 Nobz and 20 Ork Boyz gives you the basic standard mission template to build upon.

Buy cheap Ork Boyz from ebay or buy 2-3 Ork Battle Forces giving you 40-60 Orks, 2-3 Trukkz, 6-9 Bikes

Saying that you buy Black Reach and 3 Ork Battle Forces.. you will have

HQ
Warboss with Retinue of 5 Nobz mounted in a Trukk

TROOPS
12 Ork Boyz mounted in a Trukk
12 Ork Boyz mounted in a Trukk
28 Ork Boyz
28 Ork Boyz

FAST ATTACK
9 Bikes
3 Deth Koppas

You then have the option of getting 20 more Ork Boyz to create the 'GREEN TIDE' Apocalypse Formation or just the standard mission templates..

The kan models also kind of suck. They look cool, but they require pinning on the legs and arms unless you have the patience of a saint. Also the body doesn't line up that well and will require some bending to get it together and green stuff to fill in the gaps. Also not all the weapon choices are available. If you want a KMB or grotzooka you will need to convert anyway.

If you have any skill at scratch building I'd recommend you scratch build your kans.

The kan wall/green tide army is a good army build. It can be done with 6 kans. You don't need all 9. It can stand up to alot of punishment and dish out alot of hurt in assault.

If you are interested in one day scratch building a kan then here is a description. A killa kan is really just a crappy looking can with arm/gun and legs. On average the kan's body is a cylinder with a diameter of about 1 inches to 1.5 inches and a length of about 2 inches. A dread is a little less than twice that size. Of course if you are scratch building you can take liberties with that sort of thing. If you find a barrel or real life can shaped object that is around those dimensions that that's a good place to start. Like Alerian suggested with some imagination regular stuff sitting around the house can be used to construct the arm/gun, legs and wires. Used broken toys robot pieces are nice things to loot. Just glue all the pieces together and prime it. A good paint job will hide that your kan is made out of tons of random crap. If you do a search in the gallery for killa kans you'll see some quite a few scratch built kans. If you want to know how to start scratch building models in general then there are plenty of good threads in the modelling section of the forum.

Scratch built Killa Kans can take ages.. Though the extra effort really makes the army look the part.

Try to get your hands on:
Plasti-card or Thin cardboard
Lego Bricks
Loads of spare ork parts from your bitz box
Imagination is the key
Dont worry about how neat it looks because its Orky

Use lego brick to make block pieces of each part: 2x legs and body
place plasti-card over each leg to hide lego bricks
cut battle damage into leg
use ork glyphs and spare parts to ORK UP each part
repeat for each leg and body part

Arms can be made from anything, use loads of guns for more Dakka Dakka

Use grotz to add character to each one

I don't know about scratch building kans, i've never done it, but it would be a lot cheaper, and if you take grotzookas, them i can help with, i made 3 and they are all unique. There are a lot of things you can do with them, using the rokkit launcha that comes with kans is an option, i just sawed the tips off the rokkits and drilled a hole in each, and now they look like 2 stubby barrels, ad a little container made from plasticard or somethin (i actually glued together a couple axe heads into a box and used that) filled with little bits and bobs and viola you my friend just made a grotzooka for the low low price of free. Another thing that works is a converted missle launcher that you can get from the aobr marines if you didn't trade them for the second set of orks. And just for the record, i really support grotzooka kans, i think theyre amazing.

For under 1500 points you get:

Big Mek - kff, pk, attack squig, eavy armor, cybork body
Ghaz

3 x 30 shoota boys - 3 x big shoota, nob w/ eavy armor, pk, bp

3 x 3 killa kanz with grotzookas

this is what i was told about the wall of kans

The wall of kans use to be great but now that the boyz can run faster than the kanz this is actually a bad way to run a green tide army because your kans are blocking the orks behind allowing your opponent to shoot at them longer.

Wrong. Kans can run too, if you really need to get across the board.

Besides, Kan walls usualy go with shoota boys, who are not usually running.

3 Kans with 3 grotzookas, 6 S6 AP5 blast shots per turn is rediculous S6 it will wound almost any infantry or bike unit on a 2+ and you can get a good number of hits against horde thanks to blast, and you have a chance at at least glancing to death a transport.
And yes the battleforce comes with everything that comes in the trukk box, the biker box, and 2 of everything in the boyz boxes, so if you don't want to use the bikes, you can make 3 nobz with pks out of the battleforce and something like 25 boyz thanks to bodies and legs you get with the bikers and the trukk.

Rather than build a list for you, how about we just do a bit of guiding?

HQ:
Warboss, or ghazgull, for the nobz troop choice, ghazzy's 6" waagh, and the fact that they're monsters in their own right.
Mig Mek with KFF. For cover saves for your vehicles and your boys. a must have. Not a slouch in CC either.

Elites:
Lootas. It's like a squad of nothing but autocannons. Kill a transport per turn, even at their pathetic BS.
Nobs. If you don't have a warboss, they are elites.
Meganobs. Same as nobs.
Burna Boys. Need a transport to be effective, but imagine 100 flamer hits on any unit. Yeah.
Kommandos w/ Snikrot. Make the enemy fear his own board edge.

Troops:
Boys. Either in groups of 30 with shootas and big shootas, or in groups of 12 in trukks with a PK nob and sluggas. The latter must be spammed, but is insanely cheap.
Nobs. With a warboss one squad is troops. Hilariously powerful in CC, Insanely hard to kill if diversified.
Meganobs. Cheaper than PK nobs, awesome armor save, slightly better in CC than 10 diversified nobs, but die quicker to AP2 weapons and power weapons.
Gretchin. Group of 29 make a good screen for your boys.

Fast Attack:
Deffkoptas. Much needed AT.

heavy Support:
Big Gunz. Cheap Missile Launchers.
Battlewagons. Best transport in the game for it's points. I gak you not.
Killa Kans. Cheap AV11 walker.

I hope this helped, I didn't cover all the options, only the popular ones. Note that orks only have 2-3 bad units, and a good list can be made out of almost any choice in the codex.

Good idea to have at least one mob of them (probably midsized though, they are also great at distracting your opponent from the trully important infantry mobs and anti-tank jetbikes.)

I prefer Rokkits on my Kans, instead of Grotzookas.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Grotzooka; however, since I field a ton of Lootas, I don't find the S6 of the Grotzooka as useful as Rokkits. I find the S8 of the Rokkit more helpful, when you have a lot of Lootas, because it can hurt things that the S7 of the Deffgun can't.

Kans really rock no matter what weapon you give them, as long as it isn't a scorcha, as you waste the BS3 of the Kans.

I've had skorcha kans used to good effect, i only took skorchas because of point restraints, but 3 wiped out a full squad of vets and the valkyrie they rode in on in one shooting phase.

Edit: While i support grotzookas heavily, if they are going to be soley for tank hunting, you are better off giving them rokkits, i don't think theyre twin linked like someone said, but the S8 hurts when it hits. Also, for a scratchbuilt kan, if you make it out of all gw parts, it should be but thats really up to the tourney organizers. If you can find cheap aobr dreads, sentinels, or any other plastic walker of about the right size, you should be able to use them. All you'd really need to do is trim the legs shorter and swap out one arm for a weapon and obviously orkify it. Although for the dreads, you'll probably want to make it look weedier by cutting off some armor or something to rep the av 11 as opposed to 12.

Official Ruling on Scratchbuilt models for Tourneys at GW...

You can use scrathbuilt models as long as they are primarily made from GW parts, however, no judge will DQ you if you've used plasticard and putty. As long as the model is in the theme of the game and addequately represents the model it is intended to be you'll be fine.

I used a scratchbuilt Defiler (which had not been released at the time) for the 2002-2003 GT season and the judges were fine with it.
