Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I was cruising e-bay and I came across this:

He is one of your last chances to own a metal thunderhawk.

I see no one in their right mind has placed a bid on that. Not for $650.00 anyway.

There had been one up on ebay for several months. It started at a similar price and the seller ended up slowly dropping the price till last week. Last week he finally sold it for $300 and change.

There are plenty of folks who put stuff on eBay at an unrealistic price and keep it up for months. It's their nickle, but you won't find a better expression of true Fair Market Value than eBay.

the collector in me thinks that would be hella cool to have, just so I could brag about having one. but I wouldn't pay more than $100.

But the painter and modeler in me thinks it would be hella stupid to buy when the FW one looks better and there's still wishlist rumors all over the place of a plastic one coming some day.

A new day, a new time zone.

Is it old enough that the metal used might be susceptible to lead rot? That'd be a hell of a kick in the pants to open it up and find a whole bunch of the pieces corroded.

I seem to recall that it was originally on sale for £400 (40,000p). £400 = $650 at the current exchange rate. It is unusual to see limited edition GW stuff go at cost.

I think that's because no one's buying.

Its the fact that its relative value has diminished. For the price they ask you could get Forgeworld's Thunderhawk. Forgeworld's has nicer detail, its larger and more to scale with the current model, and is more consistent with the current range. The limited edition metal one is heavier (25lbs) and reknown for being more difficult than the resin one to assemble. Remember the poor fitting of the parts on the old metal/plastic predators, now imagine that times 300+.

Everyone is saying that FW makes a much better one, but thats not the point
This one is limited edition, and still looks great, if i could find a way to buy this without the missus knowing what i spent then i would

and 2 years later after all the pinning i may have it together lol

It's a fair price - it's the same price that you would have paid GW when it was released, so it's basically a discount because there's no inflation / COLA adjustment.

i agree with John here, vintage and limited items tend to fly up in price over time due to being just that.
Look at the stealer hybrid models prices now that they are no longer in production.
Its a basic rule of sales that limited items tend to inflate in price.

It may be a "fair" price. That doesn't mean that it is the "market value" price. Me personally, I wouldn't pay more than 10.00 bucks for it, simply becuase I have no desire to put together a 25 lb metal beast of a model. Especially when there is a resin version out there.

To each his own though.

To a collector it maybe worth that price. To the average gamer its really hard to justify. Only a week ago one of these sold for half the price they're asking for after being at the $300 price for 3 months. Obviously its worth as much to someone, but the market clearly says its not worth $650. What this instance shows is that clearly GW over charged for the "limited edition" designation they gave this. Just because something is "limited edition" does not mean its value is guranteed to go up.

It's pounds and pounds of metal. GW's metal Steam Tank used to be $25/lb for 2 lbs metal. For 25 lbs metal, $625 is spot on with only $25 premium for the wooden box. I still think it's not unreasonable for what you get.

The presence of a much easier resin Thawk changes the equation for gaming purposes, but it's not the same as a huge metal flyer..

I had one of these, given to my by GW, and it sat on a shelf for years and years. I was just scared as hell to start working on it and ruin it. My modeling skills a decade ago weren't up to it. Thought about using it to make a hoard of cool looking ork buggies, but the pain of being burned at the stake was too high a possibility.

Finally gave it away to a friend that loves Marines. Being that he's a warrant officer in the US Marine Corp, it seemed fitting. He probably won't ever put it together either, but it's better loved in his hands.)

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

I actually already own one of these, built and everything, she's a thing of beauty tbh, very solid and, while it takes a LOT of pinning, aside from that it all fit together ok. (and i got mine for £100 so huzzar) my one is number 242 iirc.

The problem is that perceived value is below what you're making out to be material value. In that regard it is worth more as scrap. That's a sad position but that's the reality. If people paid more than $625, that would be its worth; so far we've heard of them selling for $300 and £100, both less than its original price so those values are its actual worth.
