Hello fellow nerds,
This is going to be the painting log of the 163rd Kurfürst Panzer-Grenadiers, a mechanized IG regiment (of which everyone is doing i know i know)
They are going to be Chimera heavy and Leman Russ extremely light, with a Valkyrie and or Vulture for air support, i have written up some fluff but i will add that when its properly completed, i also plan to add identification color plates at a later date.
The paint scheme is the same as for the Imperial German army of early WW1, Field-Grey tunics with red piping, Stone-Grey trousers with red piping and brown leather equipment.
Vehicle colour scheme is Grey/Green and will have custom decals, including nudie ladies for the Valks.
Here is a painting progress chart which will update as i update my army and thread.
Key:
Black Outline = Purchased
Red Box = Assembled/Undercoated
Yellow Box = Painting Underway
Green Box = Painting Complete
07/04/10
Valkyrie interior
Pilots
Squad 1 and 2
I have crudely converted my Grenade Launchers to be Flamers and my Missile Launchers to become shoulder-mounted Meltas since we don't have those available in the Steel Legion range. Using a cut up pen tube (perfect fit!) with holes perforated with my pin vice.

Looking good. The GL conversions work well, but the missile launchers might need a bit more change to make them obvious. An extra melta-ammo canister might do that well.

I love it all. The theme, the name, the painting and the conversions. All I can say is this, "Show me more!"

I love the straps on the Valkyrie Pilots. The special weapon conversions could do with being more obvious. Personally I'd consider shortening the missile launcher so it doesn't portrude behind the shoulder as well as file down the grenade canister and add a fuel tank to the flamer. They are however well executed and beautifully painted.

I'm not a fan of the special weapon conversions. The melta guns should have the standard cylinder-with-holes look, not just a tube, and you should remove the back part to make it less obviously a missile launcher. I don't like the grenade launcher-flamer either, perhaps you should bits order a few plastic flamers to use. Sorry, I know how hard working with steel legion is, but you could stand to go a ways further on your special weapons conversions.

for the meltas, you could jsut use the normal rocket launcher but paint the rocket as a melta rocket. or the grenade launcher and paint it like it's a ma of melta grenades or something similar.
Just an idea

I am in the process of modifying the rocket launcher a bit further with the removal of the back tube, i had initially planned to do it that way but had gotten too excited finishing painting that i posted it straight away
As far as the Flamer/ GL goes i think in hindsight i will fill in the gaps of the revolving chamber and paint the canister in some suitably Danger Flame! colours, i think red/white stripes will be suitable. That should be sufficent to flamer it up a little more.
As far as plastic weapons i had considered them, but the effort of hacking off metal weapons and implanting them was far beyond my skills in conversion, a few small mods to the current weapons and it should suffice as a counts as.
Ill also be producing two little schematics of the new flamer and melta
I also plan to have the Sargeants leading the Flamethrower squads be differentiated with white/red chainswords rather then yellow/black

Thats cool and should work well! I can understand the difficulty of doing conversions with metal its why I tend to use plastic! To be honest painting the drum a different colour will go a fair way on that Grenade Launcher and I quite like the idea of a shoulder mounted melta gun for tank hunting. When your that close to a tank with that potent a gun you really don't want to miss!

Very good job painting, but they are a little bit too shiny for me. You should do something about that because it doesn't really ebb well with the darker colors you chose to paint their uniforms.

Sigh, wish i had more time for nerdness. Bloody life. Also thanks for everyone whos commented if you have painting logs i'd love to look them up and comment on them, at least tommorw after some rack time.
Did get a chance to modify the Special weapons how i liked, at first i tried diagonal stripes on the flamer but it looked ridiclous, like one of those barbershop thingies
Settled on this, quick photo will do until i paint some more little men
Im predicting my men will hit more being able to aim their Melta guns on their shoulders with sights, rather then aiming wildly from the hip like most the current IG
The models aren't actually very shiny, its just a result of the light used and the camera not being particularly suited to macro photos, here is one taken from a different angle and the levels just adjusted in PS to give you a better idea of how they look in real life.
Also updated list, all the little men purchased

Update time. It has been several months but i have been working slowly.
I have also been working on their regimental flash/standard which will be produced and printed on decal paper along with all my numbering and noseart etc. fingers crossed on that turning out alright.
All of my stuff is purchased assembled and slowly being painted. This update is a little lackluster but the next one will have some painted nearly completed vehicles minus decals.
I thought i would show off my Chimeras, i never fancied those goofy lasguns and since they are just generic firepoints now it would make sense for them to be armoured firing ports for any weapon, so i did a hatch with a few pieces of sprue cut into place, overall i feel its an improvment.
Looks a bit crude for now!
Never bought so many models at once!
Magnetized weapon mounts too, might seem a weird way to do it but it worked out the best and easiest for me, i tried just doing a horizontal beam but my magnets were too thick. Wodges of green stuff will hold them on!
Ready for undercoating.
