So when putting models together, do you all just put them together how you like and for games just say what they are outfitted with or do you actually put literally what the unit is going to use as a weapon??

I'm wondering because it seems quite expensive to buy new models each new army list because of different outfittings...

Well, I put my models fully together.
I have a larger fund of models so that each squad can be outfitted individually.

I use them as exactly what they are. Choose wisely and you can assemble squads that are nicely versatile.

You can also prepare extra troops for swapping. For example, tac squad boxes come with all three special weapons so you can use a couple of extra marines with the two left-over special weapons and you've now got options.

You can also magnetise vehicles so that you can swap weapons. (it's possible to do this with infantry but very fiddly!)

One of the basic tenants of the game is WYSIWYG, or What You See Is What You Get, meaning that the stuff a model is armed with is what it has in the army list. Yes you have to make different models to have different weapons. If you got into this hobby expecting a cheap thrill, you've been mislead somewhere along the line.

Small caveat to the above. Yes, WYSIWYG is the standard you should aspire to but for friendly games you can always make adjustments and house rules. It is perfectly allright to play your Missile Launchers as Lascannons, provided that you talk this through with your opponent pre-game. Just make sure that the units with "Counts As" wargear are clearly distinguishable from the rest and you should be OK.

But your aim should be WYSIWYG gear for your troops. It saves alot of time and effort in games when you don“t have to go through and explain all the discrepancies your force may have.

WYSWIG is the point of the game, but personally, I feel there are some models that just don't warrant it. Take for example Ironclad Dreadnaughts; I use them almost every game, and yet own only one official model, and several "normal" ones. They just don't look that much different than regular dreads, so it's not a big deal to let your opponent know that they're all Ironclads; most people can't tell the difference from looking at them anyway. Where the WYSIWG gets stupid is with vehicles. Like extra armor on a rhino, or smoke launchers etc. As if we can't use our imaginations and assume that if I am piloting a vehicle 40,000 years into the future I have enough sense to equip STANDARD equipment onto the vehicle... Anyone that complains about any of my substitutions just isn't getting played. And don't misunderstand me, I'm not a tight arse here. I've got nearly 6500 points of Bretonnians and Space Marines each; I just don't think wysiwyg matters, as long as people aren't trying to use fluffy bunny models as "counts as"...

In friendly games we allow proxying of figures, but we have started to magnatize our figures so that we can put different weapons on the figures and still be WYSISYG. This requires a steady hand and a Dremel, but it works fairly well.

How are dreads and ironclads interchangeable? They have completely different weapons.

Smoke launchers and searchlights I would not require - as you say, they are standard equipment. Like wise, bolt pistols and frag+krak grenades on marines. There is no option not to have these things.

Extra armour is an upgrade though and should be modelled. (very easy to do it yourself or you can use the panels from a vindicator, or the FW armour pack)

Bit of blu-tac and weapon swaps are sorted.
