So, after seeing a lot of hate for Lone Wolfs Licencing system (yeah, I hate it too but I suck it up like a Man!), I was wondering if anyone here has heard of/uses/is writing an alternative (preferably free/Open Source) program for making GW Game Army Rosters?

Army Rosters.com did for a while...and then they got shut down.

Don't know where they are in their project these days.

You could always try to find an old copy (plus supplements) of the GW one...

Not to sound like a smartass or anything, you could just use pen, paper, and a calculator. I'f I'm not mistaken, it's pretty free.
You could also make an excel spreadsheet. Set it up with all your necessary columns (ala AB) and have it calculate points costs as you plug in data. You could also have it plug in the percentages of HQ, Troop, etc. if you wanted to.

There are some macros for Excel/calc that can be used floating around the place.

I used to do it this way myself. Hand coding the thing until all I had to do was click a drop down and it would auto-tab things for me. It was a lot of work - and it got me a pass in a computer class I was taking (for excel).

Then my club decided to run tournies again, and AB rosters were all the rage from the entrants (I was the one receiving the lists for vetting) so AB was purchased. I can't be bothered with spreadsheets now.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I just use good old excel.
Type it in by hand write the points down and use it as a calculator. When I want to change some thing I open the file change the things and allow the SUM function to do the boring bit. Works for me.

lone wolf's licensing system isn't that bad... the hassle is totally worth the ease of making an army list.

This template is one of my favorites: concise, easy to use, and doesn't take much ink from the printer-

Tip: Before adding anything to this, save it as a template. Then you can select it whenever you want to make a new document and you don't have to worry about accidentally saving a list over your only template.

I have had AB since it came out and still a bit miffed at the money I have spent. But you know, the time I would have wasted out of my life, plus half of a forest and a couple endangered monkeys making lists by hand or on excel AB is total the best way to go. I have found that one missed key stroke and the excel templates have a fit.
