What is everyone's experience with resin bases? I really want to get some 60mm round bases similar to the 40k Dreadnought and Wraithlord bases to make my big monsters really stand out. Trying to find interesting bits that work on a base is kind of a chore as we all know, and the sculpted resin bases I'm seeing online look really nice.

However, I have one question about them. What are the bottoms like? For example, a friend has the FW dread base, and the edges and bottom are not the same thickness as the GW bases, and the bottom is not completely flat, so the model doesn't quite sit right on the table. I'd almost rather try to just buy the plastic 40k Dread base from GW (which looks really nice) than have weird variations in thickness, or have to file down the bottoms of all my bases to ensure they stand up straight.

Does anybody have some pics of any bases that are resin and unpainted, preferable the bottom and edges, or mounted on minis next to mini's on regular plastic bases?

The ones I got from Back to Bases or whatever on ebay were the same exact scale and the bottom was flat, I say give them a try if you want your stuff to stand out.

Huh. I guess FW casts their bases in a two-part mold.

I know Micro Art Studio belt-sands the bottoms of their bases, so they're guaranteed to be perfectly flat.

I highly recommend Dragon Forge

www.dragonforge.com

They make GW style in all sizes including 120mm bases. Their the right thickness and the quality is excellent.

His bases are excellent. The bases are flat. No air bubbles.

I also must heartily recommend Dragon Forge bases. That is some of the cleanest resin casts I have seen and a great variety to choose from. I just ordered a bunch of his new Ancient Ruins bases for my Retribution WM force.

Gotta give another shout-out to Micro Art Studio.

The Inquisitor Rex in my photo gallery is using their 40mm "Ruined Temple" base, and it's absolutely amazing. It's a pure resin base, with the bottom a solid piece(no opening like the GW slottabases)of resin, sanded flat.

Plus, you can get the bases cheap from The Warstore.

I've used bases from Micro-art studios, Dragonforge, Epicast, and Iron Halo. They're all roughly the same really, so find a design you like and go with it. I don't have anything bad to say about any of the above.

I got some 60mm bases from back-to-base-ix, full of detail and character, and flat bottomed.

Recommended.

Be aware tho that the bases themselves do have lots of detail, so if you are using metal miniatures, you may need to think about your posing carefully so as not to obscure details you want to show.

If you do have a resin base that's not flat (or if you want a nice flat surface on any resin piece) then there's a fairly easy trick.

You get some fine sand paper and use spray mount to stick it to a piece of glass. Now you have a perfectly flat sanding surface and you can get nice flat bases or mating surfaces very easily.

Scott, failing that, there is a very easy way of making bases flat

1st and most important, wear a dust mask when working with resin

2nd: get a piece of fine sandpaper and lay the base on it (the part you want flat against the paper)

3rd: Simply use the paper and a board, move the base about until its flat.

Ive had to do this a few times on bases, but its quick and effective.

I got some 25mm square and cavalry resin bases from Back to Basix and they were great casts and flat. They were also amongst the cheapest I was able to find. Shipping was great too, cheap and fast. Too bad my WFB army is on hold currently. Excellent bases and a pretty good selection

Have you ever thought about casting your own? That is what I have been doing lately. The process is pretty easy. I did a video series on how to. For $40 to $50 you can get a kit that will let you do an entire army. When you are done you can sell/trade/give away the mold(s) to another gamer.

On the sanding side I recommend a detail or palm sander and 120 grit sand paper, and of course a dust mask. Sanding them by hand is fine if you are doing a couple but I normal do them for an entire unit at a time. I will never hand sand 20 bases again.
