Hello Everyone,

I was hoping to get players of the actual board games thoughts on my computer game based loosely around Space Hulk!

You can see the game running here
Space Hulk on Youtube

or download the alpha test here
Space Hulk on YOYOGAMES

The entire thing is done by myself, I've been going at it now for over 14 months, and the game is really coming along nicely.

Currently I am working on the campaign module of the game, which is a dynamic, randomly generated space hulk that is different each time you start a new game!

Sad but true. GW and THQ don't seem to be too fond of these projects. OP: Check out what happened to Teardown's project - they are re-releasing it under the alias "Alien Assault"

I have been looking into this, as I cannot get any kind of response from GW. from what I can tell, then have only cease and desist'd games that are actual accurate conversions from tabletop to pc (like teardowns game, it not only have the iconography, the missions, debreifs, ruleset and mechanics were as-accurate-as-can-be conversions from tabletop to pc. Basically, Teardowns game allowed you to play the box-set space hulk, without it costing you anything.

My game, while based on the premise of Space Hulk, really has nothing to do with it, other than terminators walking around halls, fighting genestealers (among other things)
how everything works is completely built from the ground up with no real reference to Space Hulk itself, I just made my game to give the same feelings I got when I played the board game ages ago.

You would think that after 12 months or semi-regular attempts to contact GW about this project, they would have said something by now.

Even if I did get a cease and desist on this, a quick change of a few external files would change the names and graphics where appropriate, then some kind user might release a pack that replaces these external files to turn it back into warhammer. you never know

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Don't worry, if your game becomes popular GW will shut you down. They don't like competition.

A few points about the video though:

1. "Blips are green to make them easy to see, normally they are black".

Uhh... ok, so how do you see them ever? Blips are supposed to be easy to see, and the glowly green light (I thought at least) was a good idea. If they're black, they'd be invisible most of the time.

2. It seems that you can't really see much. You're limited to a very small light cone and everywhere else is very dark. This limits the use of ranged weapons considerably.
3. The Assault Cannon was powerful, but could only shoot at ranges roughly equivalent to how far I am away from my computer screen right now. That doesn't strike me as a good idea. Ranged weapons should have range, not a slightly bigger reach than someone with a Thunder Hammer.
4. HTH seems very automated. In the original Space Hulk PC game you didn't fight HTH, the computer took over for you. That meant that you essentially had a percentage chance to lose every fight, and eventually you would lose and there was nothing you could do about it. In the second Space Hulk PC game, you could control the attacks and parry the Genestealer attacks, so you could fight back - not very well mind you - but you had a chance. Here it seems you just fight Genestealers until they hit you twice and they die. Is there any interactivity here?

You have to realize, GW staff get hundreds of thousands of emails a day. They're not going to be able to answer them all, or even bother to read them. Never consider a lack of response as a go ahead for something you know isn't legally sound, and you know it's a problem or else you wouldn't be contacting them. I mean no offense, but it's a bit naive to both think a billion dollar corporation is going to respond to one little guy.

And for that matter, all you would have to do is be a tiny bit more creative and change those terminators into generic Power Armored Infantry, and genestealers into a different generic alien crawler, and voila, no more issue with GW IP.

So, if you're going to take 14+ months to do something, you should probably spend just a tiny bit of time coming up with something a bit more original than trying to capitalize on Space Hulk. Not to mention, if you think this way, you can actually go well beyond what space hulk can do and into territory where your game can be successful on its own without riding the coattails of GW. On top of that, just a little more work now saves you a lot more hassle later.

H.B.M.C

with regards to the blips, I realise now how that would be taken incorrectly LOL. you see, what you dont see in the video is the overview map (shows the whole level) on this blips are drawn in nice easy to see red. on the actual game field you can still see them as darkness, this gives you a slight edge at times, but you need to refer to the map to know where they all are, taking attention away from your terminator, which could get you killed (and thats the idea lol)

Im sorry, I dont understand what you mean about the assault cannon range, bullets can travel approximately 5x the size of the viewing area. Do you mean that due to the spin-up and close view, by the time it actually starts shooting, they are only 1 square away?

I agree with your comment on the h2h, at the moment it works on percentage chance per swing (for both sides) using armor, strength and ap. I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with a concept that is interactive, and looks good, without been confusing, but so far I am drawing blanks!

Vertrucio :

I never said I took there lack of response as consent. I said I would have expected a reply of some kind after sending 43 (just counted) emails over 12 months.

the game is already able to be changed to another "universe" all graphics all loaded from external files (easy to replace) and all text in-game is also read from file (so easy to change names). So im not really hurting myself by using these sprites and names.

while its true I could make it something else, this is what I want to make, not something else. I set out to make a game that takes the awesome idea of space hulk and fully fleshes it out. I will only change the graphics and names if GW force me.

thanks for the feedback, the both of you
