When i first got it couldn't stop playing it. I'm ashamed to say that that game has sucked hundreds of hours out of my life, although there is no other game i'd rather play.

I can admit to this. I have sunk over 400 hours of time into this game. It is by far the best rpg on console I have ever played, and remains the best after 4 years of having owned it. The Dark Brotherhood quests were always my favourite, followed by the daedric shrines. And Shivering Isles is the best expansion for any game, ever.

Ah the dark brotherhood, my favioute quest by far was of killing all guests one by one whilst they try to guess who the killer is. I always found the shivering Isles main quest to be harder than the normal main quest, anyone else get this feeling?

The Shivering Isles had its moments but wasnt that much harder (then again I despised every Oblivion gate. I cant stand them at all). The only really hard part for me in the Shivering Isles was the quest when you had to get the challice to cure your addiction from that Spider Ichor.
And that quest for the dark brotherhood I agree was by far the best, because it had alot of different ways you could complete it.

I put about 120 hours into it and there was still a lot I didn't do. Great game, improved upon by Fallout 3.

I hated that the game was unplayably bugged for certain quests, and the completely counter-intuitive leveling system that forced you to grind up skills you didn't want to use in the first place so your level up bonuses were decent. If you can find a compromise between that and the otherwise interesting content, it's a fine game.

It's a typical Bethesda game really: buggy as hell but so fun to play once you get into it properly. And yes, the Dark Brotherhood is the best arc in the game.

Imperial prison can be done, with the right combo of magic items, and loads and loads of patience.

I think what he meant was that it was generally easier to play a character who focused on either ranged attacks or close combat for their primary form of damage rather than spells. Spells are great for utility purposes and buffing your other abilities, but for the most part I found them to woefully inadequate for dealing with things in a timely fashion. Which became especially irritating when fighting undead after level 30!

Really I found wizards to be the easyist type of person, of course I would major one offenceive skill (E.G blunt, blade) and use all my spells for ranged attacks and buffing. Making them weak when they get to me, and I would have 75% sheild.
(Sorry about spelling)

Recently reinstalled Oblivion, Shivering Isle, and a bunch of mods (mainly OOO). So far having a blast just raiding a few dungeons and churning out potions.

Another thing that bothered me was that the unique items were leveled to you when you found them, so if you wanted the really powerful endgame stuff at the power level it was meant to be used at you had to wait to earn them until you were at least lvl 25.

I played the hell out of that game when it came out. I liked the idea of making poison arrows and stealthly killing people. Until you maxed out on potion making. then it sucked. The game was pretty good, but I lost interest after awhile.
Tho making a fist fighter was pretty damn cool

I did like making potions and poisons out of the things you found in the wild. You just had to spend sooo much time leveling the skill up before you could make them effective. However once you started getting past 20 poison went from an advantage in combat to a necessity because otherwise you wouldn't be able to kill anything fast enough.

I remember making a weapon with the stones from one of the oblivion gates, gave fire damage it did and allowed me to rename the sword, called it the "Flaming Sword of Fire" I did. Stole everything I could I did, made vampire cure before going to shivering isle I did, and now am looting all of the shivering isle I am.

My problem is right there in the OP. Oblivion became a console game rather than a PC game. Morrowind was streaks ahead then as now. Fortunetely the community has fixed most of Oblivions ills, i do still wisdh the main quest could be delayed - yes you can ignore it but that makes no sense with the world literally going to hell around you, and you being the key element to prevent that happening.
Two improvements needed:
1. Scrap levelled lists. Community has sorted that one, but the fix is more than a little buggy.
2. Allow a significant time delay between escaping the dungeon and the beginning of the main quest. To do this properly would require the person needed at Weyalnd priory to be 'out' so come back later (triggered at 10th level). also Kvatch needs to be visitable pre fall in that time. This would be as major undertaking to sort out but at least you wont be thrown in the deep end of saving the world at 1st level.
