So.

I've hated Space Wolves for no particular reason, my entire gaming life. For about 10 years, I've mocked those redheaded stepchildren in powder blue power armour, and pushed them around the battlefield like a schoolyard bully.

By the same token, the current Chaos Marine codex is.. just balls. And I have a Chaos army that's basically on sprue. Still sitting in the box from Maelstrom, because I decided to finish my Daemons.

The new Space Wolf codex looks like a lot of fun. Full of ridiculous rules and interesting toys.

...

The question is.. how can I use the Space Wolf codex without actually playing with the models? Preferably by using a Chaos army.

Any thoughts?

There is a thin semantic line between weird and beautiful. And that line is covered in jellyfish.

Spacewolves and CSM have a very similar gear list now...
Bolt Pistol
Boltgun
CCW
Frag and Krak grenades

Just put em together and pick up the codex... although I hate "counts as" armies w/ a passion... its your choice to field them how you want...

edit:
You could paint them up like 13th company... lost in the warp... using chaos weapons/armor when theirs break.
Could really put some cool backstory behind it if you wanted.

We are the wolf that stalks, The stars in the sky And swallows the star-fire
We hide amongst the night, when light is gone the Light is within us
We run the ruin of Fire, in the darkness Foes burn in our passing

Do a Luna Wolves army (remnants that never adopted the Sons of Horus/Black Legion banner).

You will be doing a lot of "counts as' for your army, but most people won't complain if it is cool, well-painted, and fluffy.

Either use your lesser demons as a 'counts as' for the wolves, or use wolves from the Space Wolves.

You could also run them as Skyrar's Dark Wolves. They just have a pic and a name in C:CSM, but as a lost company, you could run them under C:SW without the stretches some people have been trying to concoct for counts as armies.

do you mean modelling conversions and rules swaps or a fluff/backstory? if it's the later, you can always say that your army is the 13 company gone truely chaos. as for the former, it's actually pretty easy except for defilers and obliterators (two popular choices). abaddon can easily sub in for logan grimnar, kharn can be ragnar blackmane, ahriman is njal, lucius is the trickster special character for blood claws (his name escapes me). your daemon prince with wings (a common loadout) can now be canis wolfborne or simple regular thunderwolf cav if you need the HQ slot or you field two. chaos lords equal wolf lords and sorcerers equal rune priests. chosen are easily made wolfguard (both units in both codices have pretty much every choice available to them). khorne bezerkers can be bloodclaws with a few upgrades and your regular or veteran chaos marines can be grey hunters. half the vehicles are mostly interchangable (rhinos, predators, landraiders) so you'll just have to jetison half your motorized force. bloodclaw bikers and jumppackers can sub in for chaos bikers and raptors. also, if you have any fantasy chaos hounds or even plain demons, you can use them as fenrisian wolves. i've basically went over what i'll try and do for my chaos/sw army swap. hope that helps!

I had not thought about the 13th company, but they are pretty badass. I was not jazzed about the rules for the company in the EoT book, but with a new codex all my objections are melted away.

Go 13th Company!
