Genestealers. You just gotta hate them.

impassable terrain ignoring, moving through cover, outflanking, rending, i6 genestealers. They are horrible! Even more so with a broodlord leading them along. So what does dakka do to fight this menace?
Playing CSM, i found 2 flamers in a rhino with a combiflamer a good choice to deal with them downside on this of course, is flamers must be close to be used...

so dakka, any tips/tactics/ideas for as removing these buggers off my table without losing too much to do so?

Boltaz. They are 16+ point MEQs with a 5+ (or 4+) save. Bolters rock their face. Your CSM should have no trouble. 2 flamer templates in the rhino, they destroy the rhino, 3 more flamer templates + a bunch of bolter shots. Then they charge you with the 2 remaining stealers and you destroy them. Mechanization > Genestealers.

kinda. i'm a bit of a fluff player and try to focus my lists as Khorne/Nurgle lists. If it weren't for that, I'd probably have at least 1 unit of EC in all my lists.
Canonness Rory, i know the rhino works well, but it works slightly less if you're rhino gets popped :(

any more ideas/tactics?

CSM

-edit- instead of "get this unit. win", because the dice gods never approve, anyone want to suggest some actual tactics? or if you are going to suggest a unit, maybe suggest 1)_ what its going to do and 2) something it might synergize with?

-double edit- devs with quad plasma sounds good against a outflanking genestealers, because you aaaaaalways want them deployed in the centre of the map regardless of terrain

I can see how one might have some trouble in a CSM list, but really, they die like flies to any sort of firepower. Just shoot the damn things and they'll drop. With anything you have to hand. I mean, even units of orks shooting pistols can wipe out stealers with shooting. Just don't let them get into CC

Outflanking whilst im already dealing with a horde makes it hard to stop them from getting into close combat.

Its a given that 'stealers die horribly to shooting. And tear it up in close combat against almost anything. We've already had Canonness Rory suggest cockblocking with a rhino with flamethrowers- what are you doing to stop them from getting into CC?

If dat dont werk yer boyz must be muckin about, so ya gotz ta give a good whack an' tell 'em ta quit dickin off. Rapeet stepz 1 and uhhh... 1 and uhh... 2! yeah 2 comes afta' 1!"

Seriously though as an ork player these guys screw me alot. Mostly due to sweeping advances. But i dont think I've ever lost a game just because of genestealers, they're a problem unit for me so i usually kill 'em right away. What i do is hole up in a building/ cover of some kind and shoot em with rokkits, deffgunz etc. hoping i can pick them off before they reach me.

As a CSM player you should do fine against them. You've got access to all kinds of shooty guns that can waste stealers. Bolters, (if they dont have EC but you still got plenty of other guns available) blastmaster, heavy bolter, lascannon, meltas, the list goes on. Just stay away from em as long as you can and shoot, I hope this helps and doesnt just sound over-simplified/condescending.

To be honest, I do very little to stop them from getting into CC, aside from, well, shooting them. As an Ork player I generally dakka them down with either lootas (clears a squad of stealers in one shooting phase) or a group of shoota boys. Then, even if they do charge in, they generally die to return attacks.

Or I feed them a small unit then drive-by flame them (15 burna boyz in a BW)

As for CSM specific suggestions...

Bolters. Everybody's got 'em. Flamers - you said the rest of the army was a horde too. Havoc Launchers on rhinos. If it's a nid horde, then your biggest threat is those Genestealers/the big gribblies. Target priority. If you're in a rhino, stay in it and use the fire points to flame.

If they've got a Broodlord, definitely shoot them. Remember that broodlords don't have fleet, so you have a bit more breathing room.

thats what im talking about. I don't play orks but my mate does, I'll show him that idea

*facepalm* why do i not have havocs on my rhinos? thats a major facepalm right there and Broodlords make me wish i didn't hate the lash so much, so i could get that prick to piss off and stand in the open wanting some

Just another reason I have cheap autocannon havoks. 8 AP4 rounds at 48" + the rest of the bolter marines means theres going to be some dead stealers (~5 from the autocannons alone).

Bolters will still do the trick themselves, so I dont really see why this is a big problem. Just dont send your zerkers at them.

Bolters indeed do the trick, as long as you get to shoot at them. Outflanking can make this hard :(

Then stay away from board edges. Broodlord does not have fleet, so 6.1 inches is fine. A sacrificial unit of daemons ignores their rending with their invuln saves, so if you really NEED to slow them down, use those.

Boltguns are the way! They murder stealers and gaunts. Atleast, they have in my experience

V. nice choice, as the daemons have the flexability to DS elsewhere if the stealers get gunned, or step back onto a objective. I like

FWIW, when people are saying EC in this thread, they mean Extended Carapace, not Emperor's Children.

Extended Carapace is a major factor in killing Genestealers. The shift from 5+ save to 4+ save is a big one. 5+ is basically no save at all, while 4+ is a legitimate, useful save.

If you're dealing with the cheapo 5+ variety of Stealers, then as people have said, Bolters will work, but shooting them with virtually anything at that point will work. However, since they move through cover so well, they tend to spend a lot of time in cover, making their carapace and your shooting AP irrelevant.

Havocs won't help a ton if they're in cover all the time, but with their range it's easy for them to force the Stealers to say in cover.

What you's love to have are Heavy Flamers, which are a bit thin in a Chaos list, only being on Terminators, Defilers and Dreadnoughts, all of which are borderline units for Chaos.

In general, if you avoid the sides of the table (where they might outflank), and stick to your board edge to lengthen their run, you should do ok. The exact type of firepower isn't too material, really, it's just having it available to put on target.

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

I know it doesnt go with the fluff of your armies and alot think they are an expensive unit but a squad of 1k sons could do the trick. The slow and purposeful makes them relentless and they have AP 3 bolters. Then equip the asp. sorc. with doombolt for more cheap AP 3 shots.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

10-15 Burnas + Open Topped Battle Wagon= Dead Bugs

Works everytime.
I wheeled mine up to a big ole unit of stealters and lord (I think there was ten in all) dropped flame templates on em equaled to about fifty hits..goes to say they didn't make it.
Another thing that I did that worked I sent Ghazkull up in a truck unloaded and got the charge and crumped up.

If you need to take care of stealers you can do this a few ways and stay fluffy

1: Pour points into massed zerker units, try to avoid any upgrades except maybe a power weapon if they take 2+ MC's.
combat will be tough, but if you get the assault off they lose a slight advantage, but they will still do some damage.

2: (not as fluffy) Take a defiler or 3.
Battlecannons really do make a mess of stealers quickly, and if needed, you can hold them in combat with the defiler (chances are that it wont win though)

3: (not fluffy atall) Spam olits like most CSM players do
9 heavy bolters firing each turn can cause plenty of damage when needed.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

I use LRRs not chaosy, but works for me. they cant hurt it, I either get 2 s6 pa3 flamers, or 1 flamer and the asscanon. usually does the trick for me. otherwise, HB devie squad, or termies, sit them at 18.1 inches, and use asscannons, and storm bolters, or in your case reaper autocannons, and combi bolters. You could take combi flamers on chaos termies (can you idk) and if you can heavy flamers, or oblits. a dakka pread could do some damage. or a defiler, its a walker so theyd hit the front in melee, and it has that template tosser on it.
