I posted an earlier battle report about my Necrons at Ard Boyz round 2 and it was fun to do. I am going to write another series of battle reports on my three games at the Adepticon Windy City tournament held at Battle Bunker Chicago. This was also the location of the final Round of ard boyz. I was unable to qualify for Ard Boyz with my crons but I heard a few of the ard boyz players were sticking around for this Sunday event. Figuring on this being a tough tournament I thought it would be a good challenge. It was 1500 points per person and 30 people were there to play.
The Necrons are my favorite, but anything less than 1850 points I believe the troops are just too much of a liability and compose too much of your force. I had to set them aside (sigh) and play my other army, chaos daemons. This report has no pictures or diagrams so you will have to use your imagination to picture the events. Hopefully my descriptions will do the battles justice.
Battle Bunker Chicago, in case youve never been there, is huge. There are a ton of gaming tables (35-45) and they all look awesome. A man named Chris ran the tournament and he did an awesome job. It was a 2 hour drive to get form Madison to Chicago but the atmosphere and competition were worth it. Anyways now that that is out of the way onto the report.
My List
1 Bloodthirster (blessing of the blood god) 255
1 Bloodthirster (blessing of the blood god 255
Elite
4 bloodcrushers (icon fury instument) 200
Troops
5 Horrors with Bolt of Tzeen. 95
5 Horrors with bolt of tzeen. 95
5 Plaguebearers 75
6 plaguebearers with instrument 95
Heavy
2 X Demon Prince (wings, iron hide, Mark of N. noxious touch, cloud of flies) 430
Total 1500
Primary wave for all three battles was 1 bloodthirster, 1 demonprince, 5 horrors, 5 plauguebearers, 4 bloodcrushers.
2ndry was what is left- 1 b.thirster 1 demon prince, 5 horrors, 6 p. bearers w/ ins.
Game 1
Mission was capture 4 objectives for primary, score more victory points for 2ndry, control most table quarters for tertiary and there were 3 bonus points
My opponent was A DEAMON PLAYER!!! Crap. Well, my first Deamon on Deamon. His list was as follows
1 b. thirster with might,
1 herald of Khorne on Juggernaut with might and blessing of blood god
19 p. bearers with instument and icon
19 p. bearers with instument and icon
20 bloodletters with ins. and icon
3 flamers
We roll to see who gets first turn, he wins and deferrs to me. I roll and get my 2ndary wave. Damn no Bloodcrushers. I land my two monsters and my two troops towards the center. He rolls and gets his primary which is the two p. bearer units. He lands them towards the edge of the board but nothing bad happens with the scatter. No casualties (yet) on to turn two
Turn 2
I roll for reserves and get everything except the other deamon prince. I drop the Blood crushers 10" or so from his p. bearers and I roll a hit. Schwew didnt want to lose them. I fly my winged creatures behind the crushers and I figured I would gang up on his plaugebearers and wipe them out before help could arrive. Couldnt hit them yet but next turn I would start. I run some p. beaers over so I am very concentrated. His other large mob is a couple turns away.
Bottom 2
He rolls for reserves and gets everything. He has an icon so all his Khorne units land in front of my army. He tries getting guttsy with the flamers to get more damage and rolls a scatter into my troops. Rolls on mishapp and I get to place them. I put them in the opposite corner so they would not be a factor untill turn 4 or 5. His p. bearers roll 5 for movement and 6 for assault. They charge into my bloodcrushers to lock them in place. I kill 3 p. bearers he does a wound.
Top 3. I get my prince and use my icon to land him near the giant mess that is going to take place. I couldnt reach his bloodletters with more than 1 prince so i chose to have all 3 of my fliers that could assault hit the unit of plauge bearers my crushers were fighting. I made a screen with my small p. bearer unit made a human shield to buy time. I figured his bloodletters would chew them up and I would be able to hit the letters after I mopped up the p. bearers. My three monsters and the bloodcrushers killed 11 p. bearers. 4 survived and I piled in.
Bottom 3 He piles his bloodletters into the p. bearers of mine but his herald is able to hit one of my b. thirsters. He charges his 2nd unit of p. bearers into my p. beaers as well. His thirster flies over and charges in. It is one large melee invovling 2 of my thirsters 4 b. crushers, 6 of my p. bearers, and one nurgle deamon prince. On his side he has a bloodthirster, 20 bloodletters, 23 plaguebearers and a herald of khorne. He charged so all his Khorne stuff has fury. When all is said and done He kills all my p. beaers and puts three wounds 1 each, on all my monsters. I killed the rest of the original p. bearers, and put 2 wounds on his herald, as well as killing 3 bloodletters. He won the melee so I take additional saves on all my units and I take a wound on a bloodcrusher.
Top 4. My 2 units of horrors and unit of P.bearers are free from the mess so I start moving them to all the empty objectives while the meat grinding party is going on. My remaining prince runs in to start wailing on his thirster. Other than that the slaughter continues. I
Kill off his herald, put a couple wounds on his thirster, and drop 4 p. beaers and 5 blood letters. He wounds a couple crushers and a thirster but he loses by 5. Everything of his takes 5 saves and this kills off his thirster a couple more of each of his inf. units.
Bottom 4 His flamers fly over and are within warpfire range and kill 3 of my horrors. Melee continues and I kill the rest of his blood letters and when all is said and done he has about 4 p. bearers left.
Top 5 I return warpfire blasts with both units of horrors and kill off his flamers. The melee ends with all his troops being killed. He has nothing left on the board.
I score 48 out of 48 possible points. The guy was a really good sport and fun to play against. He would congradulate me for good rolls. His father and him game against each other and seem to enjoy the hobby. I am glad to see you can go to competetive tourneyts and still play some friendly people. I go grab some lunch with my friend and come back for my next table assignment.
I and another guy were the only 2 with max scores so we are paired against each other. Its one of the guys who played at Ard Boyz the day before and he is playing DAEMONS!!!! What?? Another deamon game. There are only 2 deamon players other than me and I will play them both. He played Deamons at ard boyz and has been playing them for a year and a half. I was pretty nervous but wanted to see what my army could do.
Ill have to write up the second round later.........

Round 2 put me at table 1 and I had to play Dakka's own Centurion 99. He even had the Dakka Dakka dice. He was also using a Daemon list. I was not thrilled about the matchup but I knew in order to do well at a tournament with this many good players there would be no easy buckets from round 2 forward. Not only that, he had massacred my friend the day before at ard boyz. We had a disscussion about one bad game at ard boyz finals ruining the weekend and we both agreed GW should change the format to 4 games for the finals to account for an early loss. That being said on with the second game.
His list
Herald of Tzeentch on chariot
Herald of Tzeentch on chariot
Bluescribes
Herald of Slaanesh on Seeker
5 pink horror with bolt
5 pink horror with bolt
5 pink horror with bolt
10 plaugebearers
4 Flamers
6 Fiends 1 w/ unholy might
1 soulgrinder
1 soulgrinder
His list looked a little more balanced than my last opponent and he was a well renowned deamon player so I was anxious to see him play.
Mission was PRIMARY Kill points 2ndry most scoring units within 12" of the board TERTIARY Kill opponents highest point HQ
I won initiative and chose to go first. I got my primary wave and landed my crushers, my two winged beasts, my horrors, and my p. bearers in the reletive center of the board with 8-9" between units.
Bottom 1
He gets his primary wave and lands the Fiends with herald in a corner near my p. bearers. His flamers land a few inches closer. His scribes are attached to his horrors and they land 16" or so from my crushers near the middle of the table near his edge. He tries putting a Soulgrinder between one board edge and my crushers but he scatters off the board. Rolls on mishap table and it is destroyed. Didnt seem to phase him and he puts another in the same spot and it sticks. He does some shooting, wipes out a squad of pink horrors. He uses pavane of Slaanesh from the scribes to walk my thirster 5" further back, out of charge range.
Top 2 I unlock my demon prince of Nurgle along with the other squad of horrors. I use the crushers Icon and put the Prince near the soul grinder. The crushers run away from the grinder and towards the scribes. My two winged monsters that can fly swoop over to hit the scribes and horrors next turn. My p.bearers charge the flamers and wipe them out. This was big because now I could fan them out and block the fiends from hitting my bloodthirster.
Bottom 2 He gets a unit of horrors and p. bearers as well and one of his tzeentch heralds. Both land away from the action in the center. His fiends charge my p. bearers and wipe them out. I do manage to kill one so I am happy with the loss. He unloads his horrors on the demonprince for nothing and decides to charge it to negate my charge bonus. We do no wounds to each other and stay locked. His scribes attempt to turn my thirster into a spawn but do not succed. He charges again to negate bonus but I wipe them out. His soulgrinder assaults my other deamon prince and I get lucky and roll a "10" on two dice to pen. the armour. Roll on the table and "5" wreck. With both grinders down and none of my monsters with wounds things were looking grim for my opponent.
Top 3 The rest of my reserves arrive and I use the icon to land them. My thirster goeas after a unit of horrors and wipes them out in melee. My demon prince that is free flies to the center of the board to await his reserves. My horrors and p. beaers make their way to the center for a little protection from the prince. My prince in melee wipes out the unit of horrors it was fighting.
Bottom 3 One of his heralds shows up shoots and does not do much. The other shoots at the thirster and does nothing. His fiends hit the thirster and do two wounds but I do 3 in return. He doesnt roll a single "6" for rending. Losing the combat he takes another save on the unit and fails. His fiends are down to about 4 with a wounded herald. He could get assaulted with one of my princes next turn so he hit and runs out of combat.
Top 4 One prince hits his herald and wipes it out. My thirster charge his other and wipes it out. The crushers move about 6" behind the wounded thirster in case the fiends hit again I could counter. He is down to one unit of plague bearers and his unit of fiends.
Bottom 4 His fiends hit again and his poor rolls continue. 1 wound to the thirster. I do three in return again. Now with fearless he loses another couple wounds. His herald of Slaanesh is dead, he has 2 fiends left and a unit of P. bearers 5" from my blood crushers. To spare the formality of finishing the game he conceeds. We go outside to have a smoke and talk about the game. He said his dice had sucked all weekend. I agreed that his dice made the game very easy for me. If he did hit with a bolt of Tzeen. he would fail to wound. If he did manage to wound usualy I would save. He was a preety good sport. I would have been pretty pissy with bad dice but those are the fickle ways of the cubes. I recieved another max score of 48. I would go into the final round and face someone who finished in the top 5 @ ard boyz the day before. He was using Eldar. I knew it would be another tough fight so I was excited to see what my army could do.

Hey, that's me !
It's great to hear that you enjoyed yourself at the event. Sorry about the Demon v. Demon pairings, but round 1 is a random draw done before the players register their lists and the second round was sorted by battle points with only you and Bill Kim scoring max points. I haven't run many tournaments, but I have been a part of the tournament scene for a long time and know what I like to see done at an event - looks like it is working.
Thanks for the battle reports. I look forward to reading about your last game with DarthDiggler.

"Demon on Demon Action" actually gives some pretty random results with Google Images, none of which are too scandalous
Nice reports so far, way to be totally lucky and get those 2x 2x demon battles! Awesome! Nice variety in the lists too, I like that one with those huge 20-strong mobs, yowza.

For my last game of the tournament I would again be on Table 1 and this time I was taking on an Eldar player. I believe he is on dakka as Darth Diggler but not 100% sure. He said he had finished 5th at ard boyz on the previous day so I figured I would have a tough fight on my hands. His army was as follows.
Avatar
Farseer (doom, fortune and guide)
10 Guardians w/ brightlance
10 Guardians w/ Scatter laser
10 Guardians w/ missle
10 Dire Avengers w/ exarch and 2 catapults
10 Warp spiders
3 Wraithlords (1 brightlance, 1 starcannon, 1 Missle all had wraithsword)
We rolled to see who would go first and he chose to go first.
The mission: Primary was to be determined by a dice roll on turn 4. 2ndry Score 500 more victory points, Tertiary Eliminate all opponents troops. Dawn of war deployment.
Turn 1 One plank was two of the eldar guardian squads. One was about 16" forward the other moved and ran so it was about 10" Forward. His center he moved the Avatar with the wraithlords in a clump about 9" in. On his other flank was a unit of dire avengers about 24" in with a farseer and the guardians left over were about 10" behind them. The warp spiders were between the monster clump and the 2 squads of guardians.
Bottom 1 I get my primary wave and drop my Bloodcrushers about 10" in front of his guardians and warp spiders. I land my two winged beasts about 14" away from his front lines and not much scatter. My p.bearers mishap but luckily go back to reserve. The horrors landed and shot at his guardians in front of the blood crushers and I killed 6.
Top 2 He moves most of his army towards the center of the board so they can work together. He dooms my bloodcrushers and guides the warp spiders. Then the entire army fires at my poor blood crushers. I had some poor save rolls and some good save rolls but when all the smoke cleared, I had only my icon Blood crusher with one wound left. Schwew that was the one I needed to survive.
Bottom 2 I gett my 2 winged monsters from reserve and land themm off of the Icon very close to his one beaten up guardian squad and one fressh squad. The rest of his army has pulled back to the center of the board. I fly my bloodthirsterr near the blood crushers, figuring if I stood around too long his lances and low AP shots would finish me off. I would take a turn to consolidate and then go all out at his army. I really had no other choice. I fly my one Demon prince on his own out to the open to maybe draw fire so the other three can make one large charge the next turn.
Top 3 He pulls further away from my crusher and 3 winged deamons. He leaves the guardians around as bait and proceeds to shoot up my single prince on his own killing it. Then his one squad of guardians with a missle launcher fire their basic weapons at my other prince and manage to roll 4 "6's" to wound me. The missle launcher also hit so I had one invul. save and four 3+ armour saves all on my unwounded prince. Failed the invul and failed 3 of the 4 armour rolls!!!!! Dammit, lost an unwounded nurgle demon prince to a basic squad of guardians. Nothing I could do but remove the figure.
Bottom 3 With the 2 princes dead I had to modify my strategy a bit. I figured I would land my infantry away from the cation and use the 2 bloodthirsters to move quickly at his army forcing him backwards to buy some breathing room for the infantry. The two thirsters assault the remains of the 2 guardian squads and wipe them out.
Top 4 We roll fo the random objective and it is terrain grab. A troop unit had to have a miniature touching a piece of terrain and you could claim the terrain as your own Any unit could contest but the player with the most wins the primary. His army was pretty consolidated about 24" or so from me and almost entirely on the right side of the table. I was entirely on the opposite side. He fired with his long range weaponry and put a wound on a bloodthirster and little more.
Bottom 4 The rest of my infantry comes in and I land them on the corners on my half the board. I run all my infantry into cover to avoid being shot and since my squads were small I figured I would go for a last minute land grab. I fly the thirsters at his army hoping to push the army back. I figured best case scenario my 3+/4+ inv. might keep both alive and do some damage to his troops units. Worst case, I lose everything but unlikely.
Top 5 He backs most his army up and dooms one thirster and guides the Spiders. The entire army unloads and kills one of my bloodthisters. His spiders jump away but roll doubles killing a spider. He jumps into terrain to avoid the thirster that is alive and it kills two more.
Bottom 5 I think of continuing to push at his wraithlord block or his troops but Im outside charge range so I would be shot up the following turn. Instead I chose to fly away from him so he cant doom me. His dire avengers were forming a snake around 4 terrain pecies on the far side of the board. I couldnt do anything to stop him so I had to figure out how to grab 5 pecies with three squads of 5 or less models.
Top 6. His spiders lose another jumping back out of terrain and unload on plauge bearers but kill only 1. His lances and long range weapons shoot at my blood thirster but do only a wound. Keeping his distance from my winged monsters has cost him a little because now he is too far away to contest any of the objectives I can grab.
Bottom 6. I spread out all my troops. The horros are able to touch a small piece and a building. One unit of plauge bearers is touching two pieces of area terrain. My last unit of p. bearers is in a piece of area terrain so I have 5. ALRIGHT all I need now is for the game to end. On a 1-3 game ends and I have the primary objective. On a 4-6 Game continues and with his units bearing down on me he will contest two or three of my terrain pieces giving him the primary. So it comes down to a fifty fifty dice roll. He rolls it and ........."4" Dammit!!!!
Top 7 His Avatar moves up and contests one piece. His wraithlords shoot up the p. bearers and kill 2 breaking my "chain". His warp spiders charge the other bearers to contest another piece of terrain.
Bottom 7 I move what inf. I can to grab three pieces of terrain but it is for nothing. No melees and I am too far from his dire avengers conga line to contest.
He claims Primary and Secondary. Neither of us have tertiary. I get the three bonus points for the battle. But it is a loss by a score of 36-3. The score was not indicitie of how close the game actually was. It was a great game and a lot of fun because there was a lot of menuevering and not a lot of melee or shooting. When all the scores were added up I finished third overall. If that fifty fifty die roll had gone the other way I would have had the top overall score. Well, thats the way it goes. I cant complain about the dice because a lot of rolls in earlier games went my way. I was honored to play an awesome player and have essentially a 50-50 shot of winning. All three opponents were great to fight against. The tournament went very smooth and without any major incident. There is another tourny on the 17th of October and Id like to try it again. This time it is 1850 so I can bring my Necrons. Not the deadliest of armies but the most fun in my opinion. It may catch some opponents off guard. I recommend to anyone that gets a chance to swing into the Battle Bunker in Chicago and check it out, it is worth it.

I was just thinking about this tournament. Did you know there were 3 players who had won the Adepticon Gladiator a total of 4 times. 3 players who had won the Adepticon Team Tournament. One player who had just won the Big Waaagh Best General award and one player who had won a UK GT Heat 1 tournament across the pond. The tourney organizer had won the Adepticon Championships twice, no slouch in his own right.
