Hey Dakka,

I run Traitor Guard and I wanted to finally try Valks. If I do, I want them to look unique. My heretics worship Nurgle so I want to replace the wings with propellers and trim down the tail (the enormity of the Valk is what I dislike the most). Where could I find good models to butcher for propellers? I want the Valks to resemble the FW drones.

Agreed sadly... not really any model with the same scale as valks that also have propellers

Check out your local toy store(s). Cannibalizing a toy/model helicopter strikes me as your best bet.

Remember those old helicopter toys where you pull a ripcord in a handle and the heli sitting on top flies straight up? They tended to have large-diameter circular propellers, IIRC.

Not actually having a Valk in hand to check size on, I would suggest trying a small computer fan. I've got a couple floating around and they seem like they'd be about right.

Yeah, thanks for the suggestion. I talked it out with a redshirt and he pointed out that having propellers above the doors (we also realized those zip propeller toys would work) would annihilate the disembarking passengers, IRL. Any other suggestions for making a Valk smaller and very Nurgled?

Ok - use three propellors (in the nurgle triangle style) at the top of a large fleshy nurgle 'sack' that disgorges its troops like an Alien Queen laying eggs (or folds out like a facehugger egg itself). By dropping the guys from the bottom, the painful propellor based death may be avoidable.

This sack could be shaped as you like, a spiders eggsack, the segmented sections of a maggot, a nurglised mechanical drop pod. And you can then have the size you like (remember that the tanks profile should at least look like it can fit the requisite number of models in it).

Then add the guns as required!

To me, the Nurgle Drone isn't 'flying' as such, it's floating and the propellors are just for manouvering. Extending that same logic, your Nurgle Valk can also float via some sort of Nurgle daemonic anti-grav, and you only need small propellors (or something else) for manouvering.

Hmm, maybe replace the valk turbines with daemonic mouths, as if the whole vehcle has been possessed?

There's a thread about a stormbird that uses a GI JOE model. The model has twin propellers like a blight drone. It is pretty big, but they shouldn't be too huge on a valk.

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

You could always use the model of the wings and props from the CV-22 Osprey.

A friend of mine picked up some of those ripcord toys at a dollar store for $2 for her kids to play with. They came with three different sizes of propellers so I'm sure one of them would work fine (you'd need two sets obviously). You'll probably want something in the 4-5" range (about the size of a CD). Craft stores sell foam rings for making wreaths that would make good housings for them. If you get the green floral foam type, you can saturate them with watered down pva glue and they'll be pretty strong after they dry (usually takes a couple of days to dry completely).

You might try using an old toothbrush soaked in acetone or thinner and scraping a piece of card across the bristles to "mist" the foam (before you soak it in glue). Where it lands, the foam will dissolve, so you want to be as sparing as possible when you do it, (and do it outside wearing old clothes). Should give it a corroded/mottled appearance. String dipped in pva can be used for "veins". Watered-down pva and toilet paper can create some interesting textures as well.

This guy's blog [ http://www.thehogsofwar.com/search/label/Nurgle ]has some of the techniques he used to "nurgle-ize" a titan (about halfway down) and a dreadnought (bottom) using wood glue, CA and expanding foam.

As far as troops being "annihilated", people disembark from helicopters all the time, both landed and by rappelling or jumping, so unless you intend to make the them into flame-spewing jet engines, I don't see why it would be a problem.

Everything depnds on how Nurgly you want it. You could make it look like a huge fly or just a Valk with a few minor convertions.
