What kind of cohorts do you use?
Do you just picked the bestest, shiniest, most useful stuff?
Or did you have something in mind?
What is your favoured organisation when using the Hammer of the Emperor?
EDIT: This is mainly concerning Imperial Guard forces only, but feel free to point out if you use any inquisitorial options.
I personally go for the WW1 style of mass Basilisk artillery followed by Infantry assualts.

By the Emperor's will, we are here.
I'm not that experienced at IG yet, but the list I've been working on is mainly Infantry with a couple of tanks and a Basilisk in support, (with an Inquisitor for a bit of close combat oomph!)

Lordette? (as far as I know, ranks in the army are gender friendly)
Anywho, did you pick your army with that in mind? Or just throw some awesome stuff together?
With me I started out with a pure Imperial Guardsmen force, but know they're being suplemented with a couple of Basilisks, more guard, and the odd commisar.

We Catachans are here, too Voted for Infantry/Tanks, although "tanks" fits my theme not that well.
I go with a light recon force - light infantry in amphibious chimeras with the possibilty to call in a valkyrie gunship for close air support.
Maybe you should add air cav as a poll choice?

+1 for the Air Cav version. I voted Inf/Tank because that is the closest version.

1 CCS in a chimera, 2 infantry platoons, with both PCS mechanised, 1 or 2 mech vet squads, PBS in chimera, maybe an elite inquisitor with mystics, varied HS choices (manticore, hydras, griffon, basilisk, regular russes..depending on my mood), fast attack depending on my mood (but usually at least 1 RR squad)...

I'm answering for a Guard playing friend. He plays 1 Command Squad, 2 Troops, 1 Veteran Squad (Power Swords, Carapace Armor, and a Chimera - his CC Tar-pit), and every remaining point goes to tanks and artillery.

I run 2 max infantry squad platoons and 6 battle tanks.
2 LRBT, 2 demolishers, either a 3rd demolisher or a punisher or exicutioner, and either a 3rd LRBT or a LR exterminator.
planning on adding a basilisk squadron or a medusa squad in the future.

When I build an IG list - I want units that can:
take OBJ's
provide direct fire support for these units and
hold my deployment zone OBJ's
I do not hold to the thought that IG needs counter attack. I think the best counter attack IG has is the vehicle mounted heavy flamer. I think designing an army with a plan and acting on that plan is a better strategy for IG than making up for weaknesses. Staying mission-focused is critical with IG as units need to be specialized. With few exceptions, IG struggles to find units that can do more than one thing well.
The part I struggle with is long range AT.
The Vendetta, Demolisher with sponson MM's, Devil Dog's, lascannon heavy weapon teams, Manticore's, Basilisk's, Pask in a Vanguisher squadron are all decent long range AT assets... Currently - I lean towards the Demolisher. Any of these can work and recommend taking in multiples. Ive tried all but the Vendetta. Pask is pricey for what he does. The Devil Dog is nice in that its fast. The heavy weapons teams benefit from orders but need to bait their targets. The Manticore is 50/50 - it looks cool on the table though. Bassie's are open-topped = too fragile. I like the Demolisher in pairs. This little baby not only screens for the most important units (those having to take the opponents OBJ) but also can kill the full spectrum of problem units. Not to mention he can draw fire away from the assaulting units and screen their Chimera's.
By far my most productive Fire support units have been the Executioner with plasma sponsons, Autocannon Heavy weapon teams, and Exterminators with plasma cannon sponsons. None of them can deal with heavy armor but they kill what my OBJ grabbers would have to fight.
For my deployment zone OBJ's - I take standard guardsmen - 40-50 with only the single heavy weapons team. If points allow, Ill take a single Commissar or Reg Standard.
For taking long range OBJ's - 4 chimera with vets or standard guardsmen work fine as long as I give them only one OBJ. Chimera have HHF's. Guardsmen have flamers and PLT HQ's or veterans take meltaguns.
At the end of list construction - I still struggle with finding a long range AT unit that Im happy with - the Demolisher with MM's and a hull Heavy Flamer get the nod as they also screen for my OBJ grabbers. Its definitely NOT long ranged, but it is mobile and tends to clear a path and disrupt my opponent's deployment.
Note: Try the Exterminator with plasma sponsons and HHB - its very versatile with enough high strength firepower - anti-transport, anti-squad. It can cover your advancing squads and tanks and help prevent transports from reaching your deployment zone OBJ's.

If you want flamer (equivalent) for your IG, then may I suggest the banewolf? AP 2, wounds on a 2+, and you can give it a hull-mounted mulit-melta for Anti-Tank.

hmm well im loveing vets with a lazcannon and cloaks ( to pop rinos and low AV tanks .
2-3 of them backed up by a 40-50 strong PCS and a com lord with power fist.
then heavy tanks(at least one vank with MM's and hull HF) and bask tend to get the job done
