There are no more aussie GTs (well, not GW ones, anyway).
GW OZ gave up the tourney scene around three years ago.

TBH, most of the tournament gamers haven't missed GWs efforts.
They were running tourneys without GW long before they set up shop here (Yes, Virginia, there was a day when there was no GW Oz. We got the English WD, too) and some of them are still continuing the tradition (with at least THREE distributors who can all source GW stock from OS, we aren't hurting for prize support, either).

I'm a little surprised that there is nothing run by GW,
but makes some sense.
Shame though

You're surprised that GW doesn't support tournaments in Australia? Don't you know that the number one cause of illegal immigration into this country is the tournament scene and especially the tournament gamers themselves, who often lead a double-life as people smugglers?
It's all part of the tournament gamer's collective efforts to maintain profits with their terrorist pals in Indonesia. Games Workshop, in their infinate wisdom, saw through the charade of power lists and netdecking and quickly cut off all support, ensuring that only 1% - that's right 1% - of all boat people actually make it to this country. It's thanks to the lack of tournaments that our population hasn't quadrupled in the past three years.
Learn history guys. It helps.

Just out of interest, is it true that the Australian Navy is permitted to open fire on any immigrants boats they can't intercept on time, in order to stop them from touching shore?

Not offhand.
Tourneys, yes. Melbourne has many. Melbourne in Flames, Arcanacon, being just two. Doubles events?
In my experience, these tend to be run more as smaller events by some clubs.
Not to say they can't have prizes and such. they often do.
