I looked on the GW site for a new model to paint. Surprisingly, nothing took my fancy...Miniatures for an army yes but i wanted something a bit different/special.

I wanted a Daemon of some sort. I started looking around other company's to see if they had anything which would take little conversion to convincingly be of a 'Chaos' nature. I looked on Forgeworld as i had seen models from them on here before....Er, i can't justify £90-100 for 'one' resin' miniature.

When looking around i noticed no 28mm scale or 30mm scale would give results what i wanted. I then searched for 54mm fantasy demon types. Spending an hour or two looking i finally found what i think would look rather decent albeit a few 'issues'.

Here's what i found 'Kaernus, the Vicious'

Its quite the 'biffer' with measurements of:

Eyes: 74mm -
Head: 76mm -
Top Height: 84mm - just under 3.5 inches

Problems: Could I really get away with this being 'Nurgle'? He kinda looks Nurgle minus being bloated and obese. What could I do to him to make him slightly more Nurgle. I dont wan't to go to over the top with tentacles and huge pussy boils. I understand thats what makes something nurgle but i want something more subtle.

Any Ideas? Maybe i could do lots of little ruptures (mini volcanoes/kinda lol) everywhere?

Please bare in mind i have never converted anything other than bits swapping...and that was years ago...

I've looked through lots of Fluff using his features, characteristics etc to see if i can pass him of as a Daemon but with no luck.

I like the fact he has antlers and that big grin with the tongue like the forgeworld nurgle model though.

Oh have I got the model for you...

I'll take a picture of the Daemon Prince I'm working on now. He's almost complete and I was going to wait until I sculpted his hand but I think a quick sneak peak won't hurt anyone

I'll post up a pic in just a minute.

This model is from the Chronopia game system (which I've never played... I only picked up this model because it was cool looking). The model is a Soulflayer from the Devout race/army. I think that's how it goes anyways. When I first received this model I immediately noticed that nothing fit together correctly, and this giant monstrous scary creature had boobs. Like... huge ones. It didn't really feel right having a Khorne Daemon Prince killing people left right and centre with huge knockers flailing about, so I gave him an armour plate. I don't exactly know what I'm going to do with his right hand, though I do know that his bracer will be made of barbed wire. It'll look badass. Just need to figure out what to do with it

Anyways, hope you like it/it gives you some more inspiration!

Looks great dude! Fortunately mine doesn't come with DD's so its all good.

I like the idea of your Khorne Icon so perhaps i could find a way to put one (Nurgle) somewhere on mine.

I was thinking of like a 'entourage' to walk around with him. Plaguebearer with icon or something? I'd ideally like him to be on a 50mm round base so i dunno how that would fit in quite yet.

Then again his right hand/arm is rather open to conversion so there might be some ideas for that.

I know you said you didn't want to do tentacles but that actually might look pretty decent for his right arm. You could also convert it so that you can see both his forearm bones (sorry I don't know what they are called right now... I need sleep

). Also, you could make him dripping with ooze (similar to how the Avatar of Khaine has blood dripping, you could have ooze drizzles

). I personally think the last idea is coolest.

Another idea that just sprung up into my noggin is instead of having an entourage of Plaguebearers, you could use Nurglings! Everyone loves Nurglings! Plus you could have them doing some crazy antics or some such (like hanging via their intestines down from his antlers).

Also I would remove the heads on his loincloth/belt as they would be too big, methinks.

I think you might be right about a tentacle right hand...

Nurglings also sound like a fairly good idea!

I have a couple of good ideas every now and then

Most of that is a pretty easy conversion, but getting the Nurglings to do what you want might be a bit more challenging.

Oh! If you check out my gallery and look at my Mordheim gang, my Possessed has an interesting 'hand'.

Obviously you'd need to make it a bit more detailed than that since the scale is larger, but the general idea could remain the same.

and did you check out Ultra Forge for nurgle deamons??

That is a pretty cool model. I don't think it really needs too much doing to it to make a DP, nurgle or otherwise.

Perhaps some boils, skin flaking off (use the drying superglue method), perhaps dig a few pits out of his body and fill with rotting muscles etc.

I think I would actually love to get that model myself... far better than the GW prince anyway...

Yeah i saw plague demon, which i liked but...I'd have to wait 2-3 weeks for it. But i kinda like this one as i can add my own touch on it, plus its slightly different.

However, I really like the wings that they sell! That'd look cool. I can't see no 'Nurgle' GREAT daemon type character there. Must have sold out.

His face is cool eh, thats kinda why I want it. That, his antlers and that huge weapon. I think i might go with a really pale green-y white for it. Something a little different. It would still have some disgusting looking green and green/purple on it.

That's what i was thinking, nothing to much. I'd prefer it be subtle. I like the tentacle idea now though. I just don't know if i could pull it off.

I think ill order it some nurglings and other nurgle bits and play around with the base, it may only take the base to get the point across that its nurgle.

Walking through some vegetation thats rich and growing infront of it and then dying and wilted behind it?!?!

Lol yeah, we have addressed that.

Its good that you noticed it straight away, so its obvious i need to do something about that.

You put a dab of superglue where you want the skin/armour to look like it is peeling, then, while it is drying you use a pin to pull and tug at the glue. When it has dried after you doing that, it looks like peeling paint or skin when painted.

I like that idea... perhaps you could make a spreading pool of dead vegetation around his feet where he had been standing for some time... sort of a dead slime at his feet, then fungi going on to blackened grass and then more healthy stuff on the outside.

I like the model and I'm liking the ideas. I too am a believer that Nurgle doesn't always mean: Fat, bloated, and maggot filled.

Also about ultraforge, apparently they are redoing the Greater Plague Demon (Which is what I'm waiting on)

Ah i see, I'd practice like crazy first to see how it comes off.

I have to say I am not a fan of the super fat Nurgle models either.

I much prefer them just to look diseased and generally rusty etc. My nurgle themed CSM follow the above ideas... None of my DP's will be bloated.

Few simple ideas. Make sure you paint his weapon and metals a rusty yucky color. Theres a few really good tutorials on dakka on how to get awesome rust. As for the nurgle icon on him, using GS you could mold like a cattle brand type deal of the 3 cirlces on one of his pecks. Make them raised a little bit to draw your eye to them. That and painting the skin sickly and in spots like some type of nastyness is coming out of his skin. That thing could be a pretty bad ass deamon. I too like the antlers. I had a chaos biker champion (long ago) that I put antlers on his helmet and it just looked the gak

Yeah i might pick up some pigment's for the rust. I read some tutorials for it (lucky i have isotropyl alcohol already) .

I like the green stuff idea for the Nurgle icon, it would be like a scar or branding as you said.

And it would fit as he has various tears around his body.

I had an idea - sticking with the base going from luch ground to rotten grass/bones etc i thought about his right hand stroking or running his hand through long grass which would then look like it was dying by him touching it.

However, it would look silly as the grass would be as tall as a space marine!

The models awesome, shame about the antlers, the left knee pad looks cool, if you could put horns on the other heads it could look like some others deamons squabbled a bit much with him and lost i think two arms for the right side would look better than one loke a mutilation of some kind and mayve some ooze for effect, i found candle wax can be good for ooze just a pain if you mess up as you have to scrape it out of the recesses, hope this was some help

Ha ha I'm keeping the antlers. Like i said its what i liked about the model. The Forgeworld model has antlers so people would be able to think (hopefully) "Yeah thats nurgle"

Well I've decided to get the nurgle point across mainly by the base now. He'll have a nurgle-y paint job too. Im hopefully going to get some pigments for rust to use on the blade etc.

Wax eh? Ill have to experiement.

i reckon with the leg-boil and chest-peel the only thing you need to make this guy Nurgle is a sythe and a nasty paint-job

I was thinking about the scythe. As there is that prince in terminator armour with the scythe. That would really be cool. I think it comes with a two weapon option too so ill have to see what i can do.

A scythe shouldn't be too hard eh?

It seems his right hand could be cut at the wrist then swiveled round so the scythe could run through it and into the left hand which is open and wouldn't take much to look right.

Im sure there would be clearance issues but ill have to plan it all out.

Thanks for the suggestion, i also agree it should be subtle as he looks menacing enough.

I don't want to go too mad on the paint job though. Rotting flesh is what im going to go with. Something different. Maybe pallid flesh with washes of purple and green? Ill have to do some tests first.
