I just wanted to say how cool that Matty guy was! And how cool that Taco Blake and GWAR! fellas are!!! (sorry couldn't resist)
Now for my REAL discussion!
What initially attracted you into the "hobby" and what keep you gamers playing, building, etc!
For me i was initially attracted via MTG, when i was in high school i played a little magic, and we would always go to our FLGS's Friday Night Magic Drafts and local type 2 events. I remember the first time i saw 40k being played a magnificent looking Ulthwe army was battling against this massive seize IG army (didn't look as good but the number of painted models was still impressive) and i thought to myself wow this looks dorkishly awesome! So picked up a 3rd ed Marine codex and never looked back (I stopped playing magic that day too)

I started when my friend and I where playing with some little metal toy soldiers (not from GW). I said to my mum "I want some". We went to GW and bought some LOTR Elves.
Since tHen, I've stopped LOTR and started playing WFBG and then 40k. It was HeroQuest for me - also heavily into Space Crusade.

Oh man, I'm talking back in the day...who remembers those books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, you know, the Fighting Fantasy books.....
Thats what got me started on the whole Fantasy trip, and from there we went onto Lone Wolf by Joe Dever....
Good times.
