Hi all,

I got the battle for skull pass set, and after playing that through a couple times ive decided to start on a WFB army but I am not feeling the dwarfs or the Orcs and gobbos. I was hoping some vets could give me advice on how to start up.

the three armies that immediatly caught my eye are the Vampire Counts, the Beastmen, and Empire, but I am very open to suggestions b/c frankly, all the armies look cool.

I have read online everywhere that the Vampire Count army is very dominant, and I dont want an army that nobody will want to play against b/c its "broken" so is there a way to build a VC army that is still competitive but not so tough that people will not enjoy playing against it?

My issue with the Beastmen is that they are due for an update soon, but not soon enough for my liking. If i started a beastmen army now and kept it relatively small do you think all the troops will still be useful in the next iteration of the army book.

and I do like the empire and how flexible you can be with them and how they can do a lot of things well if you build your army to do them, but are they the jack of all trades and master of none?

any opinions, info on these armies, or ideas about other armies that are friendly to a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

all the best
and thanks for any input

Vampire and Empire are a good choice , we know atleast they'll get good attention . They also have updated miniature range.

Beastman on the other hand... they are dangerously rare ,
lots of the models are ancient . You mentioned you can start small , perhaps a unit or 2 of plastic gor and ungor to start?

Also dont forget , they are chaos . No one will get mad if you do some conversion and have some beastman be
chaos warrior / chaos marauder or chaos anything!

thank you for our advise, ill definitely look at the other chaos armies to see what kinda conversions I could do, i was thinking that beastherds would look good as chaos marauders.

Vampires. They're the strongest of your choices.

Don't play a weak army, as it'll just be draining.

Play a strong army and you can always hold back.

I honestly don't agree with John.

I play Orcs and Goblins, and I don't find it draining at all, and I've won my share of games.

Ahh, but to each his own.

I will agree with him though, on Vampire Counts. What a Newer armybook guarantees is that you won't have to worry if GW decided to update your codex, as yours is pretty recent as it is.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

i agree with john.
if you want to run a strong army you can always hold back and run it lighter.

on the flip side of that you really need to run what is appealing to you. if youre looking to win 100% of the time and crush everyone into the dirt run VC or deamons. if youre not looking for that then run whatever looks most appealing to you.

if you dont like your army and simply run one that is considered top tier youll find that you are never truly drawn to it and will loss interest in it pretty fast.

As a new player I'd suggest you go with empire.

It plays in all phases of the game.
It can be tailored to what you want depending on the opponent (i.e. lots of warmachines and guns or lots of fanatics and 4 warrior priests)
It is a great army to learn with as it is not immune to psyche.

In the Webway.

Theyre all good armies but if you want a simple army to start go with empire, with a good mix of shooting, CC and magic theyre an ideal begginer army. But on the whole id reccomend Vampire Counts, i dont play them but theyre tricky to play against and have some good methods of annoying the enemy, regenerating skeletons etc. Theyre not one of the cheapest armies the best units being expensive but selling your dwarfs and gobbos youll be able to buy a decent amount. The armies look good too, thier musty, dusty look works well.

thanks for all the advice, its helped alot.

I am not selling my dwarfs and gobbos here, this isnt the place, i just want to say that right off the bat, so i dont get in trouble with the forums

but

how would i go about selling an army? is ebay the best way or are there other places. the two forces are fully painted, is that going to hurt their value or raise it? id call the paint job tabletop quality, b/c they look good from afar and are fine on the table top, but closer examination shows its not very detailed or anything (it was my "learning to paint" army) is that going to hurt me? and advice on how to sell these armies so i can go buy some empire or vampires would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Middenheim! Teutogen guard are the best. I just use mine as greatswords since they aren't in the army book, but they look great.

Well, it depends on what you want for your army. I wanted an army that is fun to paint, is colorful for a change, and has a tank of some form. Thus the Empire found its way into my wallet.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

You'd be surprised the decent trades you can have over the Dakka Swap Shop, but to each their own. Ebay is ok, though you may get less than you want (though you have to deal with those fees). Bartertown and Rogue Market are also well reputed trade places. I'm noticing that unless the painting quality is professional to award-winning, a paint job is likely to hurt the value of the army (depending on who's looking). Most older/more experienced hobbyists will know/will be willing to strip everything so they can re-paint things, but it generally won't increase the value of your army.
