Why wouldn't they want stricter requirements to make sure only those who actually pay taxes have access? Thoughts?

How is it they live in such harmony - the billions of stars - when most men can barely go a minute without declaring war in their minds about someone they know.

Well, I think immigrants are treated a bit harshly otherwise, but it does seem perfectly reasonable to grant healthcare access only to those citizens who pay their taxes. If you're part of a nation, you should support it.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

At what point does all your other information not make a difference? It is not exactly easy to get onto Medicaid, actually... it is really quite hard. So drawing this "hard-line" is a bunch of fething bull meant to put the "heat" on the Dems. Now all the Dems look like this and that and etc... but none of it changes anything. JEB seems to have a hard time sleeping as well . J.K. mate, no hard feelings I hope.

National ID cards. Problem solved.

Don't most other countries either have such a system, or in one way or another not even need it? National I.D.s that is. I have always wondered why they don't push to standardize I.D.'s. Probably to ease paranoid minds no doubt. Some state I.D.s I have seen... look like a joke, no offense or anything. It is not exactly hard to get a fake I.D. in California, but more often than not, they are of such poor quality it would be ridiculous to expect anyone to accept them. I have a hard time proving my identity sometimes with normal stuff. Why would a bank need my passport? Is that normal? Wait... that's WaMu... right. Damn information grubbing bastards, you'll never get my money... not that you really wanted it apparently.

In Japan, I have to carry a foreigner ID card with me at all times. I have to use it to do almost anything - get a phone, rent a DVD, etc. They used to have my fingerprint on there, but now they just fingerprint you when you enter the country. However, Japan is uber-anal about who gets in, visas, terms of stay, etc. You can dick them around for awhile, but too much they just show up, grab you and put you on a plane and send you somewhere else.
As for the bank needing to see your passport, how about this; renewing a Canadian Passport requires you to prove your citizenship. The Passport has "The bearer of this passport is a Canadian citizen" written in it like three times in two languages. However, when you renew a passport you have to prove you are a citizen AND YOUR EXISTING PASSPORT, issued to you by the government, ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. You have to dig up some ancient birth certificate without any photo of you on it to prove you are who you say you are. Doesn't matter. It isn't a real country anyway.
I know my rant has nothing to do with the topic. I'm in the midst of renewing my Passport and I'm ticked at the g'heyness of Canuckistani authorities. Sorry.

I've got a gaijin card to. I used it recently in the UK to prove my identity in Marks & Spencer to get some Euros. They looked at it a bit funny and asked me what it was. I said it was a Japanese government ID card. The M&S rules are you have to present official photo ID. Most people probably use a passport or driving licence.
Automatically Appended Next Post: The UK does not have any national ID system as such.
No-one is asked to prove their ID if they go to hospital for an emergency.
If you want to register with a GP you need to give their NHS number, which citizens receive at birth, or their NI number which is issued at age 16 or if you are a legal resident (like my wife) you are given one.
All EU citizens can get an ID car called E111, which entitles you to free treatment in any other EU country. (Or treatment at the same cost as natives would pay.)
The UK govt has been trying for some years to bring in a National ID card scheme, but no-one is fooled. The scheme is an expensive, unworkable boondoggle.

Personally, I think people should be required to obtain a passport at 16. Of course that will never happen as its far too reminiscent of 'papers' for the electorate.

Reasonable objections aside, there are people out there who think that national ID cards in the U.S. would 1) bring us one step closer to Nazi Germany, and/or 2) bring us one step closer to the end times as described in Revelations.
I've actually heard these "arguments."

I remember my father telling me that back in the 60s in the US he mentioned to his workmates that he had to get his Passport renewed and they were all astonished going on "What are you? Some kind of spy?!" lol
