We had the biggest and best table booked at warhammer world, we knew it was going to be a great game...

The fortress was on the defenders' side (BT and DH). The objective for the attackers was simple; overrun it and annihilate any resistance. For the Defenders there was only one goal...stop this from happening.

    SETUP

    KEY

    TURN 1 attackers

Orks and Chaos roll lucky and get the first turn, but the defenders don't realise just quite how unlucky this is. The attackers have scheduled bombardment placed just behind the fortress walls set for turn 1. As ships swoop over and drop their payload onto the unsuspecting forces of the imperium, 3 stormtroopers are killed along with a rhino which explodes; its flying debris killing yet another stormtrooper. Quickly following this, the ork fighta-bomma zooms overhead and drops two bomms onto the remaining stormtroopers, and whilst none of the stormtroopers are maimed, two nearby Purgation Grey Knights end up in the explosion and are destroyed. The tide of chaos and greenskins slowly advances on the fortress, but are too far away to shoot so continue to run forward, eager for close combat action. The rhino with beserkers in it boosts in advance of the rest of the army, as does the battlewagon containing the burna boyz. But the Plaguereaper has other plans, as it notices the land raiders hiding in a broken wall of the fortress...

The sound of thunder erupts as the unstoppable tank immobolises the Grey Knight Land Raider with its demolisher cannon, and then aims its lascannons towards the Black Templar's Crusader, but merely stuns the crew.

    TURN 1 defenders

With both land raiders unable to move, their only choice is to pick off targets with their weaponry, acting as turrets. the crusader fires at the Nurgle Marines, but incredibly inflicts not a single wound! The immobile Grey Knight Land Raider decides to seek revenge, firing its lascannons directly at the plaguereaper. They easily penetrate the huge tank's armour, and cause it to lose a structure point. Meanwhile the rest of the imperial forces decide to stay back and brace themselves for the oncoming tide, obviously an unwise move when facing an army of mainly Khorne and Orks; close-combat specialists. The stormtroopers atop the fortress walls survey the battlefield, ready to inform Solomon Lok of the attackers' arrival...

    TURN 2 attackers

Scheduled bombardment strikes again, this time directly on top of Solomon Lok and the Assault Marines...

Warp Seer: "Solomon, oh mighty Inquisitor, i detect something coming"... BOOM!!
The bombardment wipes out Lok's entire retinue, leaving him defenceless, and the Assault Marines' lives are also taken by the mighty weapons of mass destruction. The fighta-bomma then repeats its actions by striking wherever the bombardments struck, and manages to wound Lok by dropping two more bomms onto him. The tide continues to move forward towards the fortresses exterior, with the battlewagon and rhino leading the assault, closely followed by the warbikers and the fleeting possessed. The Plaguereaper fires once again at the crusader, but only causes yet another Crew Stunned result. The Sorceror casts Bolt of Change on the crusader, but inflicts no damage. The Marines and Bikers of Nurgle stay with the Plaguereaper, trying to distract the land raiders to fire at them instead, and with their better-than-average toughness they could prove to be quite a steadfast sheildwall...

    TURN 2 defenders

Although the Warriors of Nurgle proved themselves worthy with high toughness, unfortunately the armour penetration levels of lascannons and multi-meltas eventually proved too much for them, and the land raiders wiped out 3 of the marines. Meanwhile Lok continues his plan of staying back, but the Black Templars Close-Combat Terminators decide to flank the orks by going around the side of the fortress and attacking them from out of a collapsed wall. They manage to move up to the area of dangerous terrain, but can move no further. The remaining stormtroopers position themselves on the high walls, and behind one of the fortress doors, ready to assault whoever may appear on the other side. The other door must remain open, and the black templars wait alongside Solomon Lok to help him hold it when the time comes...

Deciding that they need some way of attacking back without moving, the defenders call upon the awesome firepower that the damocles is able to hail. Summoning an oribital bombardment directly onto the Khorne Marines, it causes major casualties and 6 marines die.

    TURN 3 attackers

The Plaguereaper begins to retreat from the land raiders, leaving them stuck and unable to move in their alcove. As it moves it fires once again at them, but causes no significant damage. The Nurgle Marines run off and follow the army of Khorne assaulting the fortress. The Rhino unloads, as does the battlewagon, and all hell is unleashed as a wave of fire from the burna boyz is set upon the black templars through the open door, causing multiple casualties. The beserkers then fire all of their bolt pistols and plasma pistols at the remaining line of Neophytes and Initiates, eliminating every last one of them. At the other door, the stormtroopers prepare themselves for the Marines of Khorne which are approaching...

Behind the army of red, the greenskin Nobz and Warboss were approaching the terminators at the side of the fortress, shooting at them with their sluggas. The deffkoptas and warbikers fired rokkit launchas and dakkaguns alike at them, but the terminator armour was incredibly resistant and only 2 terminators were killed. And just when the defenders thought they had suffered enough, the final scheduled bombardment struck directly on the two land raiders. Luckily for the imperial forces, they were not destroyed, but the fighta bomma was still picking targets. Sweeping over the fortress walls once more, it dropped two more bomms on Lok and his surroundings, destroying a rhino and forcing the templars inside to disembark. Not content with the damge it had done, the ork flyer then fired one of its supa-rokkits at the land raider crusader, but it failed to penetrate its thick armour.

    TURN 3 defenders

It was time to fight back, the attackers had reached the fortress and were going to overwhelm the defenders if they didn't act fast. In a quick effort to stall the bezerkers, burna boyz, and possessed an inquisitorial rhino sacrificed itself by driving in front of the open door and staying their, creating a wall which must be destroyed before the attackers could get in. The Stormtroopers on top of the walls rapid-fired all their hellguns at the khorne marines, but the weak weaponry only managed to kill 2 marines. The rest of the ground troops just waited for the opportune moment...

At the other door all of the rhinos evacuated their passengers and the squads of neophytes and initiates lined up in stout defence behind the might of Solomon Lok, the Emperor's Champion, and the Master of Sanctity with his Terminators. They were the only hope that the defenders had of saving the fortress...or so it would seem!
'PHHHUUURRRGGHH' The sound of the warp filled the air as Grey Knight Terminators and their power-armoured brothers teleported into the midst of the battle. But it wasn't the best of starts, as the terminators and a grey knight squad mishaped and ended up directly in the line of fire of the Plaguereaper's Pus Cannon. Despite this, they fired all their storm bolters and destroyed 2 deffkoptas and 3 Nobz. The close-combat black templar terminators continued up and over the dangerous terrain, and one terminator was killed, but they did eventually make it to the Nobz, but were not in range to charge. The Land Raiders hadn't given up either, as the Plaguereaper was still in their line of sight. The lascannons did nothing, but the multi-melta on the crusader managed to inflict a Drive Damaged result, making the super-heavy tank's movement halved, and therefore stopping its plan to drive off and leave the land raiders stranded.

    TURN 4 attackers

Although all of the scheduled bombardments were now over, the fighta-bomma still had 2 bomms left, and also an orbital bombardment waiting to be summoned, which is exactly what they did. The orbital bombardment was called in onto the black templars defence line, and destroyed a rhino and 5 templars...Solomon Lok however, survived yet another bombardment! The fighta-bomma flew over the grey knights and the pilot looked out of his window...

'KABOOM!' The final two bomms were unleashed, killing 2 grey knights. The fighta bomma then shot its final supa-rokkit at a rhino hiding behind the fortress and destroyed it, before firing all of its big-shootas at the Grey Knight Terminators but not doing any damage. The Plaguereaper then fired its Pus Cannon directly at the deep strike-mishaping grey knights and terminators, killing 2 terminators and the whole grey knight squad. It then continued the ongoing battle with the land raiders, firing its lascannons and demolisher cannon, but caused no damage. The Warbikers and remaining deffkopta fired all their weapons at the grey knight terminators, as did the nurgle bikers and marines, but only one was killed. The sorceror attempted to cast bolt of change on the land raider crusader but failed his psychic test. The Nobz and Warboss eventually charged the Black Templars terminators, and wiped them all out with their (slightly) higher initiative. Meanwhile, at the fortress the battle was really raging...

The chaos rhino fired its havoc launcher at the rhino blocking the doorway, and in a state of total luck, it scattered and ended up hitting the rear of the rhino. Then, with a very lucky roll a penetrating hit was scored, and the rhino exploded, causing 2 stormtroopers to die. The Battlewagon fired all of its weapons at the many stormtroopers on top of the walls, and managed to kill them all except one. The Chaos Lord then commanded his troops forth, with Beserkers and Possessed pouring over the wrecked rhino and into the ranks of the Black Templars. They killed Solomon Lok with their plasma pistols and bolt pistols, before assaulting the rest of the Templars. They killed 4 of the Terminator Honour Guard and the Emperor's Champion, but the Master of Sanctity fought on with a single terminator. The Khorne Marines then made it to the door on the left which the stormtroopers had now opened, and killed 3 with their weapons before assaulting and finishing off the rest of the squad...

    TURN 4 defenders

The Master of Sanctity wiped out 3 bezerkers, but then he and his last surviving terminator were overwhelmed, with the Chaos Lord providing the final blow to kill him. The Emperor's champion's Honour Guard assaulted the burna boys but were all killed, whilst the burna boyz only suffered 4 wounds. The remaining few Khorne Marines at the other door were eventually killed by what was left of the Grey Knight Purgation squad and their psycannons. The Grey Knight Terminators then finished off the Deffkopta with their storm bolters before charging the Warbikers. They eliminated the squad but suffered a casualty. The power-armoured Grey Knights shot at and then charged the Nobz, killing them all, but they themselves were killed by the warboss. The Grey Knight Land Raider could no longer see any targets and so was declared 'abandoned', but the Crusader followed the Plaguereaper with its multi-melta, making it lose another structure point.

    TURN 5 attackers

The last surviving stormtrooper was survived the rhinos havoc launcher, but was killed by its pintle mounted twin-linked bolter. The Battlewagon's zzap gun dstroyed the final inquisitorial rhino in spectacular fashion. The Grey Knight Purgation squad were shot at by all of the Bezerkers Bolt and Plasma pistols and were killed before the 'zerkers even had to charge. The possessed finally charged the damocles hiding at the back of the fortress and destroyed it. The Plaguereaper finished off the Crusader with its demolisher cannon, but the grey knight terminator survived the combined firepower of its pus cannon, heavy bolters and lascannons. He was eventually topped by the sorcerors bolt of change psychic power.

Thank you for posting this - interesting to read and the maps were fairly easy to understand due to color-coding and size/shape.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Thanks! my initial thought the whole way through it was that i was trying to make people understand what was happening without actually being there. This was hard because i could picture the battle in my head and i knew what was going on, but i thought how are others going to know what's happening if i just write about who kills who.

It only took 4 hours of my life away, but it was worth it just to see some appreciation!!

I'm new to reading battle reports here, but this is the best I've read so far by a good margin. I love the maps, and the pictures are a great touch. It makes me yearn for a game of Apocalypse.

I played as the imperium in this battle report.

The worst part of facing the attacking army was the orbital bombardments. The only one who seemed to be able to survive them was Inquisitor Solomon Lok - without a doubt my man of the match.

If I was to do this battle again I would probably be more offensive with the rhinos and stormtroopers so that they attacked at the same time as the deep striking grey knights. Hopefully would have reduced the amout of fire the grey knights took from the plague reaper.
