As the title states I'm hoping to branch my war gaming into the realm of fantasy, however I've hit a snag.
I cant pick an army.
I've narrowed it down into beasts of chaos, lizardmen ogres and tomb kings and any info on them will be much appreciated ie number of players, support, new release dates and most importantly style of play + tactics.
P.S I noticed skeleton warriors only have ld 3 that seems very low, can someone enlighten me.

Beasts & Ogres are bottom tier, so scratch them off the list
Lizards & TK are higher tier. Lizards are better-rounded whereas TK really need to get their Magic going. Lizards are newer, so go with them.
Beasts are rumored for next after Skaven, so they could be good, but we won't know for a while. If you like the models, wait until the new book and re-examine things at that time.

I agree about ogre kingdoms althought the models are great and its cool having an army of 3 wound monsters they are badly underpowered. The truth is they just aren't good at what they are supposed to be good at. WS 3 and only T and S 4 just doesn't work.
If the rumors are right beasts will be updated soon but knowing GW it won't be worth waiting as it could be years.
As for LD3 skellies they are undead so very different to normal troops. Basicaly they don't flee but take wounds instead, also they cause fear. This is why magic is very important for TK. You can return wounds to your units, and give them extra abilities. Another good point about TK is the list, they can take a wide variety of units so can be played in a lot of styles.
Lizard men are also a good army. Their Slaan are in competition for the best wizard in the game, and the main troops, Saurus are tough fighters.
If your starting fantasy I would suggest lizardmen as in my experience they are more forgiving and TK special rules are complicated

I have a lot of fun playing ogres, but they really aren’t a good starting army. They are a fun to paint and excellent for converting, but they have a very steep learning curve.
Who knows what GW will do with Beasts when they come out, rumored to be in March of 2010? It could be worth putting together an army now in anticipation of the new army book, but that seems like a gamble.
Tomb Kings are really dependant on their magic, which can be limiting in army composition.
IMHO Lizardmen are the best army you have listed. You have the option to tailor your army to magicy or fighty with a very legitimate list to be competitive. I would recommend going with lizzies.

I have said before " 40k is a game that GW makes to get people into Warhammer Fantasy" So welcome. With that out of the way though, out of your choices I could only recommend Lizardmen. Beast of Chaos ( BoC) are sorely waiting for a codex but there haven't been any models sited yet so still a bit off. Ogres are tricky to play and not that good right now. Tomb Kings are the LAST army that I would recommend to someone just starting to play Fantasy. They have a steep learning curve. Also, the models are quite dated. Stick with one of the more recent codexes. Have you seen any of the new skaven stuff?

If you do decide to start a beasts army, only buy the ubits that you are certain won't be redone. As it is hard to tell exactly what will be comming out I would suggest waiting if you are desperate for beasts of chaos.
Whats more important models, background, playstyle, competitivness (is that a word?) ect..
If you can tell us what your priorities are and what you want in army we can help a lot more. So far we have all said ogres are bad but if you are most interested in models they may be the army for you, its deffinately the reason I have a small ogre army.
However if you want to play competatively then lizardmen are a good choice, as they aren't too complicated and are one of the stronger armies.

beasts. they are close combat oriented with some tough wizards (shut up, bray shamen are beast(no pun intended) with chaos armour and a bray staff) ogres. very fast, tough, and strong, they have a weird way of doing magic that usually caches people off guard, and the fact you have an entire army of 3W 3A models messes with people too, the others are right in that they aren't the most competitive army but they are hella fun (I'm just an ogre player and therefore not biased at all). lizards. they are strong and tough and they have the skinks who are pretty good shooters, they also have a ton of special characters if you like to play like that TK. I find this choice rather interesting as most of your other choices are elite armies (low #s but awesome stats), chariots as troops is really cool, but the basic troops are pretty fail but there is a lot of them and they cause fear (if ya don't know what that is, it keeps people from charging you and makes them flee when you charge) and they have some awesome special units It might also help if you put down what armies you already play, because there is probably an army that plays like it.
