Reason I'm asking is while I was reading the Woof article of the day there was a remark under one of the pictures that states:

The banner-bearer in this Grey Hunter squad is an old Space Marine model that's had the banner from the Space Wolves Pack set added to it, and also the Backpack from the Space Wolves accessories frame. The long-grass on the bases of these models seems to be cropping up a lot in the Studio lately...

So, anybody know anything?

It would be an awesome asset, as long as it comes with instructions on how to get it to stand up. My experiences with static grass so far have been pretty hit and miss.

I apply the static grass upside down, and then blow the excess off the area (still upside down) before it dries. Also I smack the bottom of the model a bit to knock up a few more. I usually get the majority to stick up when I do it that way. All my orks have static grass on their bases.

You can already buy "LONG TALL GRASS" from the people who have been making it for years, WOODLAND SCENICS. You know, the same people who make the static grass, water effects, snow and sand that is repackaged and sold by Games Workshop. You can visit their website at http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/index.cfm

TALL GRASS: get it to stand up
There are plenty of tutorials on how to use Woodland Scenics products on their website. I've used the "long tall grass" before and it's not hard to get it to stand up. Just trim it to the length you want, put a glob of glue on the base, use tweezers to stick it end first straight down into the glue.

STATIC GRASS: get it to stand up
As for getting static grass to stand up, it's called static grass for a reason as it is highly attracted to static electricity. If you rub a plastic rod on fabric (i.e., the sweatshirt you might be wearing) so that it gains a static charge, then wave it just above the static grass you've just placed in wet glue, the grass will stand up as it attempts to stick to the charged plastic rod.

<--- this guy feels like an idiot now. That sounds a great deal easier than what I was doing.

I buy my static grass from the model supply shop down the street. It comes in large containers (almost 2 liter bottle sized) and runs for about 10 bucks USD. I don't remember the brand though. After I bought a couple colors I never really needed to shop for static grass agian.

(appended)

I checked the brand I own. It is Woodland Scenics liked BrassScorpion suggested. It's the same thing that GW sells (i couldn't tell the difference at least) except it comes in a shaker that will last forever for the same price.

Glad I could help. There is one cool thing about the Static Grass sold by GW you don't get from Woodland Scenics. Most of the Static Grass sold by GW comes as a multi-color mix, cleverly blended for what I believe are some really nice realistic looks. The Static Grass at Woodland Scenics is sold in single colors, so you have to create your own mixes if you want that extra bit of realism.

By the way, a good source of cheap plastic rod that holds a static charge really well are those cheap plastic rod "shoe trees" that come in some new pairs of shoes. They work great for getting your static grass to stand up as I described above.

Here's a link to the "field grass" long tall grass made by Woodland Scenics: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/items.cfm/FieldGrass

plus Field Grass how-to tutorials: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/FlashVideos/FieldGrass.html

and large containers of static grass: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/items.cfm/StaticGrassFlock

There are other how-to tutorials for many different products on the Woodland Scenics website.

If I had to bet that is a product by Silflor.

it is called Prarie tufts. The mix looks like either the 4mm or 6mm late summer blend. The stuff is the shitnizzle. it comes ready and standing up. You pull it off a backing and glue to your base.

A box will last for an army...easily.

I use it on a lot of my figures.

Here is 4mm Winter grass

The troll on the right has the 6.5mm Late summer blend.

I think I saw in a tutorial once a pretty neat way of doing tall grass...

Get a rather long clump of the stuff, put a drop of glue in the center and cut it in half when it dries. And then you glue the dried part to a base and it stands up like that. Never really used the stuff myself so I have no idea, but yeah.

GW have been selling new grass/scatter for a couple of weeks in new colours now. Personally I wouldn't pay they're prices, the amount I use it's cheaper to buy a few colours elsewhere and mix my own. Nice tutorial!

Any 40k gamer with a game box set should be able to apply static grass - I just used the plastic flamer template and rubbed it against my shirt. Works a treat. I imagine anyone watching would think I was some sort of prevert with weird gaming preversions, but, meh.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I don't even buy most of my models direct from GW, and certainly not their peripherals.

I love my GF9 grass and basing materials. Done about 1/4 of my ~5,000pt chaos marine army and still have hardly made a dent in my static grass and basing grit.

Great value for £2.70 a tub. Looks far better than the quite frankly horrible mixes GW does as well...

That SCENERY EXPRESS product is good stuff. A friend of mine showed me that for the first time last summer when he was building a diorama for Golden Demon (pictures at this link) and I was most impressed with it. It's on my list of hobby products I'd like to add to my supply.

That's what she... heyyyy. I won't be falling for that flame-bait!

I usually get Woodland Scenics stuff. I have never yet had to replace a shaker
can, but then again I have different colors of the stuff.
