In all of the 40K universe what areas do you feel that there needs to be more background, or you think would make for a good story.
Being a Navy guy I was thinking of something like Navy seals but from regular guys in the IG but in the imperial Navy. For example non-space marine boarding parties, taking special objectives, etc.

Oh, good thread idea
Ok, areas that definately need more attention:
Storm Troopers, something of an expose of a child going from being an orphan and his trials in the Schola, to being part of a special operation as a fully fledged Strom Trooper.
More stories about the Sisters of Battle!
My favorite, a story about the Assassins Temples, not a bit role like in the Inquisitor tales, something specific, focusing on the politics of using Assassins, right down to their indoctrination, modification and training....
To be honest, if these stories were to be done in any readable and enjoyable way, they would have to be done by writers that are currently NOT part of the Black Library, those guys are idiots, with only a Hollywood grasp of military operations, and real world politics....Someone like Chris Ryan would be great for the Storm Trooper books, Clive Cussler would probably do a good job of the Assassins, or Tom Clancy would be awesome for the Assassin or Storm Trooper novel, he has, perhaps a better grasp of politics and has the right attitude for action....
Sisters of Battle.....oh, go on, give that to Dan Abnett

To Delephont's awesome suggestions (stormtroopers, sisters, and assassins--although I would drop the last one since the temples should remain extra-super-mysterious IMO), I would suggest some novel-length AdMech stuff (the HH book was not to my taste so I'm not counting it, plus I know there is at least one great AdMech short story in Let the Galaxy Burn) or even something from the Administratum's POV. I think LtGB also features a great Lovecraftian story about a scribe investigating a long past Chaos incursion and more of that would be welcome. What I'd really love to see is an omnibus of Rogue Trader/spacefaring/naval combat tales (part of my dream that GW will one day support BFG again).
I'm split about whether there should be more books from xenos' point of view. The ones that are out have been complete failures in many people's estimation. I have no doubt that it'd be possible to write a good one but it would really have to express how truly alien the aliens of 40k really are to work. I'd like to see a good Eldar book before another Tau one. I'm afraid, however, that the Eldar would require prose with the gravitas of the Silmarillion to do them justice and I can't see BL actually trying to sell something like that.

I actually consider Orks the most alien race.
The Eldar are semi-rational, at least.
Of course, an Ork story is going to be about foightin' not finkin' so it's not going to be as much as an issue.

You could tell a story from an ork's pov easier than from a nid's, I'd reckon. Still, getting the ork perspective down would be difficult.
I mean perzpektiv, of course.

Depends on how the Tyranids think. If it's just "move on to next target... jump on it and slash...", it's not going to be hard to understand (it'll be boring, though).
Now, a Genestealer cult would be an interesting one. There you would have enough humanity for it to actually become alien.

That's a great idea. Another place where that Lovecraftian style (I'm thinking especially of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth") would work superbly. Do you read the Cain novels, OrkRex?

Really great ideas from everyone!!! I thik the grot story soundsgreat. I like Delephont's point about Chris Ryan. I was also thinking about the early history of the empire. The point when our current history starts becoming lost to time, the verge of the history of the future. That one apex in the 40K timeline. Stories about Aliens never really work, simply because for us (humans) to get "into" the story we need something, some point of reference, in which to ground ourselves and sympathise with the events and the characters.....this invariably means, the Aliens take on certain human aspects.....this lets them down.....
Of course, this is assuming that human concepts are NOT universal concepts, it could well be that our ideals of right and wrong, and morality are the result of self aware beings living in close proximity in a society based commune......who knows?!?!
Glad to see a Stormtrooper book on the horizon, not so glad that its being written by the plebs at BL, still, if they have any sense, they'll rape notes from various modern day military novels, like Bravo Two Zero.....but I doubt it, so it'll probably be Marines, without the armour....har har!
I like the idea of a book being compiled about the Start of the Emperors reign, Unification Wars or some such....that would be really interesting...

More books about the chaos legions (especially the Alpha and Black legions) wouldn't go awry in my book.
A series about the Octavian war would be nice-Xenos on Xenos with no imperium interaction FTW!
It's probably just fanboyness, but something detailing the Adpetus Custodes would be nice.
More information about the Traitor guard would be nice-if only to prove they don't always lose.
Finally, More information about other Imperial guard regiments-namely Elysians, Death Korps (especially Death Korps ), Steel legion, and Vostroyans.
LLF-is saying no to the man.

Death Korps really aren't something you can write about...
Oh look, seven years of siege warfare! MAN HOW EXCITING! It's like reading All Quiet on the Western Front, BUT WITH LASERS!
Elysians would work, Steel Legion would--again, be kinda boring. Vostroyans would be reading about a bunch of stuck up nancies...
But hey, that's my opinion

Okay, Okay....Maybe Death Korps were a bad choice.
Although....a story about WHY they are the Death Korps (e.g why they had 500 years of Atomic purging) could b interesting.
Steel legion could be changed to Armageddon in general...I ain't fussy .
Vostroyans-The Commander could lose his big hat, starting a great adventure to get it back .

I really like the stories of the "why" and "how". How about the events leading up to the atomic purging, the Vostroyans were traders way back when, how about some stories about those guys, as far as Death Corps, there could be some SOF stories, not just the stories from the trenches, maybe the aces in the skies of that conflict, since it has the WWI flavor. I would read about that. I think that Little Lord Fauntleroy's idea about the traitor guard is awesome. I love reading the about the dark places of the empire, the small corners that we don't know about, lost plants, forgotten cultures, kind of why I like the idea of Space Hulks just appearing.

I don't think anyone has successfully captured the true creepiness of a Space Hulk appearing yet.....its all been Har Har....lets send in the Marines, and relive Aliens2!!
Can you imagine the true horror of a Space Hulk appearing in system, and no Marines for a million light years in any direction? I'm sure the PDF would have to go in first, they could write a book about the approach alone, and that could be a master piece of atmospheric writing!
Not to mention what could drop out of a Space Hulk....
Thats another thing, Daemons! No one has really captured the horro of a demon infestation....I'm think the Excorsist (Spelling?) meets Dawn of the Dead.....right now, when ever the BL writes about demons and such, I feel like I'm reading a novel with Dick Dasterdly as the main bad guy...its comical at best....even the mighty Dan Abnett in his Inquisition novels fails to really bring home the horror of facing a demon.

I like the idea of grot rebels and assasins, but what about normal imperial families? Caught up in the chaotic mess of war, there would be plenty of opportunites for short stories concerning refugees etc.
