As I finish my Khorne Banelord Titan, I find my thoughts drifting to my next projects. I have a 40K IG army half built, but I also have been thinking it may be time to give WHFB a shot with the Skull Pass set I have lying around. While I originally planned on a standard Night Goblins army, I was struck by a crazy idea the other day...

A goblin army modeled after Jim Henson's Labyrinth.

I did a quick search and haven't seen one yet. It would be extremely modeling/green-stuff intenstive, but pretty unique if I could pull it off. The main issue is the goblins in the movie had hair (which would be gs), were more flesh colored, and were more motley in size and appearance (use of empire torsos would be needed). I don't know how familiar you all are with the movie, but the units I had in mind so far:

The Goblin King - Counts as Army General modeled after the David Bowie character, probably a mix of Empire bits for the body and Wood Elves for the head.

Goblin Knights - Counts as Wolf Riders/Squig Hoppers modeled after the crazy knights riding dinosaurs.

Blutto - Counts as either a Troll or Giant, modeled after the big furry orange guy. Giant/Troll with GS fur.

Orange Goblins - Counts as Trolls, modeled after the crazy dancing guys with the removal heads. Probably use Stone Trolls and GS fur.

Oubliete Drill - Counts as Snotling Pumup, modeled after a random drill machine in the movie. Modeled using the new Skaven Doomwheel.

What do you guys think? This list would obviously not be competitive, but more of a modeling exercise. Any additional unit suggestions would be appreciated.

Would love to see it! Labyrinth is one of the most creative, unique, well envisioned and well executed movie experiences of all time!!!

Sounds fun!

Though I know you want to make use of your Skull Pass goblins, if you’re really hardcore about the concept I suspect you’ll want to make use of the Ogre Kingdoms Gnoblar models for most of your goblins. They’re clearly inspired by Brian Froud’s fairie and goblin designs, as are all the puppets in Labyrinth. Many of them are doing things like giving each other piggyback rides and such, as Froud’s characters do. I’d also recommend checking out a Froud book or two for additional visual reference/inspiration.

Wow, thanks for the links Mannahnin. If I go through with this project, I'd definitely abandon using the Skull Pass models.

Just doing the conversions in my head, I think it would be a combination of Goblins, Gnoblars, Empire and Bretonians to get it right.

That would be a great idea. How did I never think of using David Bowie as the general of my army?

Ah. So many memories. Just reading your list made me want to look up pics of Labyrinth.

So in case anyone is reading this thread without seeing the film, go and see it. Don't get fixated on the fact it's got no CGI in it, just love it for what it is - Pure Innocent Fantasy.

And I'll leave you with Ludo.

Not to mention the largest, most impressive-looking genital bulge ever portrayed in film to date!

That'll do, David. That'll do.

Yes. Horrifying. I've been trying to block that out of my mind for a long time now. The therapy isn't working....

Movies with good puppets are better than CGI anyway. This is a campy classic.

This army is a fab idea, but yeah, a Whole Lot of Work.

Hmm, you definitely want a WHFB army? It could also be done for a 40k army.

Actually you don't realize how wrong you are. Labyrinth had one of the first fully detailed cgi sequences ever. The title sequence owl was entirely CGI.

Ah. Yes. Ok. You win. Although I thought it was CGI enhanced film overlaying the other shot film...

But the film itself is made of pure awesome sauce mainly because it's all live action puppetry rather than CGI. And I know you agree!

I _love_ this idea. Do it!

I see fanatics modeled as those goblins from the hedge maze, carrying those little pink bitey guys on sticks.

A goblin shaman modeled as an old man with a bird-head hat.

A goblin wolf rider champion as Sir Didymus on Ambrosius.

I want to work the firies in there somehow, as that's one of my favorite scenes. Perhaps as squigs?

Hmm, I was wondering whether Jennifer (and also Hoggle) should be part of this army - Jennifer would be rather hard to find an equivalent for in the Orcs & Goblins codex! But if this is to be a Labyrinth-style _goblin_ army (as opposed to a general Labyrinth-style army) then it makes sense only to include inhabitants of the Goblin City, who are all goblins except for their leader the human(ish) Goblin King (Bowie).

+1

I just watched Labyrinth last week with my wife who mentioned me doing something similar. I'm not into WHFB so I didn't bite, but I'd love to see you give it a go!

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Thanks for everyone's input on this. The more I think about it, the more I'd like to try it out. I'll have to rewatch my copy of the DVD, but came up with a few more ideas.

Two units in the movie featured goblins in armor. Model wise, I think I can use Bretonnian and Empire knight helmets, goblin/gnoblar torsos, shortened knight arms and legs to give them a stunty look, and green stuff armor joints to tie it all together. I don't know if I could get away with using Black Orc and Boar Boyz rules for them, but we'll see.

The unarmored goblins would be a little tougher, and require green stuff for hair. I'm trying to think of suitably pot-belling torso's to use, and wonder if empire/bretonian peasants would work, again with stunty goblin arms and legs.

I hadn't even considered it, but this may be a reason to try out resin casting as well...

Some Dwarf models (the ones _without_ moulded-on beards) would be worth considering too, I think they'd look quite undwarflike with changed heads and arms
