So I got a chance to play in a tourney last weekend.

I took a few pics of the tables/armies and also my own battles and missions. Here's a few pics I snapped. I'll post the battle reports soon.

Tables:

Armies:

Overall, I placed 7th going 2-0-1. It was my first tourney since getting back into the game and all three of my opponents were fun to play against.

Game 1:

Mission -

Well, let's just say there were a few of the players who didn't like this scenario. I drew an Eldar player, but with our deployment, I had to put my dreads into Reserve and he couldn't use his Wraithlords.

Overall for us at least, this wasn't that bad. But with 40K tourneys, you have to be ready for ANYTHING! (So take more troops! )

I had to set-up first so I spread my army over the length of the table so I had access to 2 objectives and could get to the middle with at least 1 squad. And I figured if one flank got in trouble a Dread or two may come on from reserves to help out. (bad thought . . . )

He had a much better idea (and flexibility) and moved to decimate one flank and take his chances staying outside of my 24" kill zone.

First few turns, we find that I'm missing quite a few termi's on my left side and I'm officially a fan of Harllies. They're nuts, even for Eldar. My right flank is pretty much doing nothing but getting into position as none of my dreads decide to even come on the board until turn 3.

But the flaw with his list is he doesn't have many scoring units. I mistakingly think I need to get rid of the Harllies ASAP, and neglect to outright destroy the WS/Guardians when I had the chance. . . .

So the left flank flounders and I finally get a dread to come on, but only to receive 40+ attacks from the Harlequins and a quick death. He's got the left flank secured (pretty much) and moves his Harlies across the board edge so that I can't get another dread into HtH with the WS, and get rid of the one objective he's secured.

The rest of the game, we try to remove each other from the middle objective since it's worth d3 points. I've got one objective clearly held on the left side, while he's got one on the left - so we're tied unless the Spears/Avatar can remove the Termies in the middle.

We actually made it through 5 turns. As the game ends he finally realizes he "could' have moved his last WS to capture one of the other Objectives for the win, but we rolled for the game to end I pull out my tie as the termies in the middle hold v Avatar.

Good report. I'm definatley not a big fan of that mission in a tournament though it would be interesting for me either way. At 1750, I lose either two predators and a thunderfire cannon or I lose 5 attack bikes. Sounds like you played very well and would have won except the one missed opportunity to kill a troop choice. Definately looking forward to the other two bat reps.

Ok - Battle number 2!

Mission:

The only good thing my commander does is allow me to take the terminators as troop choices. So I thought this was a win-win for me. Either I was "hopefully" taking a high point HQ from my opponent and getting to guard them by a squad of Terminators - or I was going to lose a 130 Chapter Master basically.

I ended up taking the HQ and drew IG. He was playing with CREED!!!! so this obviously hurt him more due to not being able to issue orders from the start of the game.

Since the whole first turn was me just getting to move another 6", I was able to DWA my Libby and his squad. This was all well and good until my opponent was able to get ALL of his army on some outstanding reserve rolls.

This lead to the libby being the only survivor and the choice of giving the 3+(I) to Creed, or taking 5+(I) on my unit to survive across the field. I also only had 1 termie survive my shooty squad that landed in the DT middle building, and with an Assault Cannon no less. He would be my hero of the game!

As I failed the 3+(I) roll and insta-killed Creed, I had to go on the offensive as this was now a KP mission. The escort squad then went after his armor on the left flank while my little 1 man wreaking crew survived a whole lot of fire and was able to survive another 2 rounds of close combat with his infantry squads!

This did lead to me winning via KP 10-2.

Losing Creed I think really hurt him. I didn't have any "funny" rules or crap about the Valk, and we both basically traded shots with the LR/Vindi's as they were considered the easier "KP" to grab, but alas we just basically kept either missing, or doing no damage.

It was a fun game, though as my little assault termie kept moving through the lines. Didn't expect that to happen!

Could you do me a favor and type up the mission for round 2? I can't read it in the pic you've posted. Especially the secial rules and victory conditions.

Ok. I reversed the colors. Maybe that's easier to read?

So, we come down to Mission 3:

This pitted me vs the other Dark Angels player. I liked the urban terrain table, but did not get a chance to play on it! But this one looked pretty good too. And actually for this scenario, ended up saving the game.

So we roll, and of course I'm the defender again because of course Deathwing always like to teleport "up" to the ship.

So I had to deploy all of my army within a 24" circle in the middle of the table. This was great for the length of the table, but not so much vs the width as this gave my opponent 12" to my lines.

So the only saving grace I had was the fact the circle was actually basically made of terrain and he would have to roll difficult terrain to get to me. The way the scoring worked, he would get 2 pts for each KP he took out, while I only got 1 but I also got to pull one unit of at the beginning of my turn.

It was confusing at first, but as the game progressed it became clear for our game it was going to be harder for him as the terminators ended up being very durable and I started pulling my "easier" targets (the vehicles) out first.

The first turn finds the bikes getting rid of one of the vindicators and he's already up 2-0, and I'm thinking it really sucks to be the defender here. He also did bring all of his units in on the short sides of the board, and anything in HtH can't be pulled off the board.

I pull a vindicator off one of the short sides so it can't be assaulted, and end up getting rid of the bikes so at the end of 1 we're tied 2-2. The only thing left to be assaulted is the Libby and his squad, so I pull them out and I'm up 2-4. Now I just need to take out his "easier" targets and I start concentrating on his Dread, Rhino, and Landraider.

It seemed very tense up until turn 3 where I did end up destroying the Landraider with a Vindi shot and his termies had to walk. After that point, I just moved all of my stuff to the middle of the table and kept shooting.

In the end, I ended up winning the game as he just didn't have enough to destroy my units.

So, in the end it was a great tourney. There were a few things that I think people were not expected for, but that's 40K. I thought the judges did a good job trying to of course manage a few "issues", but for me - bringing Deathwing to 5ed, I thought I was handicapped enough

very interesting scenerios... good battle reps! Honestly i think that first mission was kinda bogus (some armys run no fast attack slots at all ><, but the other two were kinda cool!

Thanks for the report. That was a cool theme for a tournament. Did you know anything beforehand about it being all Attacker/Defender missions?

No. We didn't have any idea what we were going to go up against.

There were "discussions" during the tourney as obvious match-ups were perceived as unbalanced.

From what I heard, some players just decided to be the attacker/defender so they didn't lose any of their slots.

Run what ya brung!
