Objective: Seize ground
Deployment: Pitched battle

So after rolling objectives Jesse (the SM player) won the roll and chose to go first. He spread his forces out pretty well, with a dread, some assault marines, and the 7 man squad on my left flank toward the objective (the demon gate is the small white gate on my left board edge). In the middile marneus set up, with the LR and second dread. Behind the building he placed the foot slogging melta team. he placed the 5 man scout team behind some cover to hold his objective, along with the rhino. On my right he placed the predator, 5 sternguard, and 6 man dev squad where they could see most of the board.

For my deployment I placed a rhino with plague marines on my objective. next to it I placed a vindicator to face down the dread and 2 squads. to the right of them about 10 inches over I placed 1 dreadnaught and my land raider, near the open so I could ride up and drop abaddon off to take out calgar ASAP (his stupid "I pass morale when I want to" ability is annoying to say the least). To the right of that I placed my second dread. on my right flank I made a large rhino wall, lining up all 4 of my rhinos to charge his objective. I placed the obliterators and vindicator behind them so he couldn't see them (at least for 1 turn anyway).

For his scouts he placed them in the tower and forgot to scout move em

I failed to steal and the game commenced!

On my left flank he moves up the assault marines, 7 man squad, and dreadnaught. The scouts in the tower move up so they can see stuff next turn. His other dread moves up some. The sternguard, 10 man squad, and rhino on my right move up a little.

Jesses shooting phase is ridiculous, I honestly thought he was going to plow me after this turn! After Calgars orbital bombardment whiffs, his Land Raider shoots all it has into my land raider (2 lascannons)... one lascannon rolls a 6 and pens, and he rolls a 6 again blowing it up! Luckly i made my saves >< Abaddons footslogging now. The predator blows up my red rhino, killing 2 zerkers and wounding my sorcerer. The devestators blow up ANOTHER rhino of mine and kill 1 marine inside, passing my pinning test.

I decide that Abaddon is in a terrible spot to be, so I move him (rolling a 6 for difficult terrain) over behind a small plateau, hiding. Neither dread goes insane, so I move them both up 6", hiding my left one behind the same plateau as abaddon. My other zerkers who are in a crater roll a 6 as well for DT and move behind some cover, making sure the sorcerers head can peek over it.Both my in tact rhinos move 12", smoking. Oblits move up 6", aiming for the pred. Both vindis move up 6", passing their dangerous terrain. The last rhino stays on my objective. The 9 man undivided squad moves 5" up toward the tower, within melta/assault range.

For my shooting phase my lash sorc moves the sternguard 5", taking them out into the open and bunching them up. My meltagun guys blow up the building, the scouts pass all their saves. Oblits shake the predator, which makes it useless for a turn yay! My left vindicator whiffs 5" off the dreadnaught, killing 1 marine. My right vindi whiffs 4" off the sternguard, but due to no cover, kills 1.

The normal squad with meltas is in charge range and assaults the scouts, killing 2. Jesse decides to stick in and we pile in.

No reserves come in for Jesse. In an attempt not to go into the canyon near abaddon with the dread and 2 squads, he maneuvers the assault marines, 6 man squad, and dread around the plateau away from my objective. Calgar, the second dread, and his land raider move up max range. His sternguard move toward my green rhino, his 10 man squad moves toward my other rhino. everyone else stays put.

For shooting this turn jesse does a lot less damage! The sternguard blow up my plague marine rhino. He then shoots EVERYTHING at the plague marines on the right flank, but due to the lovely crater I'm in and FnP on top of my armor, I don't lose a single model! He runs a bunch of stuff.

The scouts kill 1 marine, I kill 2 scouts. Taleon and the last scout choose to run, making their initiative and move 8". I consolidate 5" moving toward the land raider, keeping within 6" of the scouts.

No reserves come in. I move my vindicator on my left back 6", hiding it as much as possible. My dread moves up into the canyon, basically just being a guard there. Abaddon stays hiding. My middile dread moves up 6" toward the LR. On my right flank the oblits move 2", getting a clear LOS to the pred. vindi moves up 6". Plague marines move 5" toward the devastators. Nothing much else.

For shooting my oblits take down the predator with their (single) lascannon pen. The lash sorc lashes the 10 man squad into the open, allowing the rhino with meltaguns to kill 2 and my other vindicator kills another 4 ( whiffed 3". My meltaguns by the land raider fail to penetrate. My plague marines kill all but 1 sternguard with their plasmaguns.

For assault the dreadnaught fails to hit the land raider.

Jesse makes both reserve rolls, but mishaps the assault marines off the board putting em back into reserve! The terminators land spot on, however, right behind my right vindicator. For movement jesse moves up his rhino, disembarking the whole squad. His last 4 marines from the first squad stay put, aiming their meltas at my last rhino (I have 1 more on my objective but I don;'t count it doing much). All his stuff on my left flank moves around the terrain finally, moving up to get into the open. Calgar moves toward my dread in the open. His LR backs up 6" and takes aim. His running scouts move 6", still not far enough away to rally. His last sternguard moves 6" away from the plague marines behind a bit of terrain.

For shooting jesses MM dread wrecks my middle dreadnaught. His last 4 melta marines blow my final rhino, killing 1 marine inside. His disembarked squad fails to wound the plague marines, as does the sternguard. His dev squad shoots all it has at the plague marines, but due to cover saves and poor rolls fails to do much. His heavy bolter scout shoots the plague marines too, doing nothing. On my left flank all his remaining units and land raider unload all they have into my 8 man marine squad in the wrecked building. After all is said and done I have both meltaguns left, and I make my morale! yay melta guys! His 10 man termi squad (surprisingly) shoots all it has at the zerkers on my right flank, killing 2.

All my reserves come in! I drop the termis near the middle, by both his dreads, scattering 5" back. Placing them in a circle around the middle terminator I'm able to get 2 into double dice melta range. My Greater Demon kills off my newly disembarked 9 man marine squads sergeant, chosing to be seperate (so the marines can move this turn). The 8 remaining marines move up 5" (DT test) toward the rhino. My plague marines roll a 4 for DT and move up onto the cover with the devs, 3 of them peeking over to see em. abaddon stays hiding, the dread on my left moves up 6", working his way around. My left vindi moves 6", enough to spot marneus My right vindi moves up 6", and pivots. The obliterators move 4", getting as far from the termis as they can. My zerkers move up 6".

In the shooting phase my 5 combi-termis blow up Jesses MM dread. The vindicator on my left sticks its cannon shot on marneus, causing 5 wounds to his squad (doing 1 wound to him and killing 2 after cover saves). The oblits and vindicator on my right hit the termis a ton with destroyer/plas cannons killing 6 after saves. My lash sorcerer lashes the last full 10 man marine squad 7", bunching them up in such a way I can get the assault off. My plague marines shoot the dev squad, killing 1 missile launcher. My two melta guys don't do anything to the LR :( the meltas in my 8 man squad stun the rhino

In assault my chaos finally get to show their stuff! The greater demon assaults the last 4 marines of the melta squad, the zerkers assault the full 10 man squad, while my 8 man marine squad assaults his rhino, the 2 melta guys assault the rear-right of the land raider, getting behind it some so it can't back up. The rhino takes no damage (whiffed all rolls), the greater demon wipes the 4 man squad and takes 1 wound, consolidating 5" right toward his objective, the zerkers kill 6 marines and take 1 loss, but the marines decide to stay locked in.

His assault marines make it in and stick, landing directly next to my right vindicator (uh oh). His assault marines on my left flank move up 12" right next to my 8 man squad. His dread, marneus squad, and 6 man marine squad move toward the 5 man termi squad. His land raider move up, pivots around, facing the last 2 melta marines. The scouts (finally) run all the way off the board. His remaining termis advance toward my oblits, making it within 8" of them.

His shooting phse this turn isn't as eventful! He shoots the land raider into the final 2 melta marines, doing 1 lascannon wound and 3 heavy bolter. I take the las and 1 bolter on one guy, removing em. The second guy makes all his saves! woooo go melta dude! Passes leadership as well! His 5 assault marines shoot their pistols into my 8 man squad, killing 1 with their plasma. His devestators shoot their guns into the plague marines, killing 3. the termis shoot everything they have at the oblits causing 1 wound. His last dread and marneus shoot everything they have at my 5 man termis, killing 3 after saves.

The assault phase sees my right hand vindicator wrecked by the vets with 5 meltabombs :( My zerkers/sorc kill 3 more marines, putting it down to just the sergeant. He kills 1 zerker putting me to 3 zerkers and the sorc left. The assault marines kill off 1 of the 8 man squad, and I fail to wound, passing leadership.

Seeing my opening I take it, moving abaddon out from behind his plateau finally. The vindicator on my left moves 6" again, aiming at calgar once more. My left dread finally gets all the way around the damn terrain, heading toward the back of his dread. My last melta guy stays where he is, facing down the land raider! RAWR! On my right my greater demon moves to assault the scouts, my plague marines move 6" thru cover to get right next to the devs (no more cover now!) My last 2 termis move up 6" to get into assault range of calgar. My oblits move 2" toward the termis, ready to assault if they have to.

In the shooting phase the final melta marine wrecks the land raider with a lucky shot! WOO! This causes the special tank commander guy to get out and all 7 of his terminators. My last vindicator kills off 2 more of calgars guard. The plague marines own the devestator, wounding with all their plasma and bolter hits! The oblits shoot twin linked plasma guns at the terminators, wiping them out.

For assault Abaddon and crew assault the dreadnaught (marneus is out of range). The last 2 termis assault calgar. My GD assaults the scouts on his objective. His assault marines wipe out my last 6 marines, consolidating 6" toward my greater demon/plague marines. Abaddon tears off both the dreadnaughts arms, causing it to kick (failing to wound anyone). My Str 9 powerfist zerker does nothing but glance the dread.... rolling a 1. My termis are wiped by calgar, causing him to consolidate 5" toward my last vindicator (hes avoiding abaddon). The zerkers kill the last marine finally, consolidating 2" toward the assault marines by my vindi. mygreater demon kills all but 1 scout, and he decides to stick with it.

Almost everything on the board is in assault, so jesse moves his assault marines on the northern end of the board toward the 3 plague marines. His southern AM's move toward the oblits. His last sternguard moves into the open, hoping to take out a zerker or two before dying. Calgar moves 6", almost in assault range of the vindi.

Shooting sees the sternguard fail. Oblits make all their saves, and the other assault marine squad fails to wound the plague marines. His guy from the LR shoots his pistol at the last melta guy, failing to wound ! this guys a beast He charges in!

The marines assaulting the PM's lose 1 of their number due to dangeous terrain check. The resulting assault sees 1 assault marine die and 2 plague marine, making all fearless saves. The greater demon cleans the last scouts clock, consolidating 6" toward the plague marine fight. The stormshield/thunderhammer termis from the land raider squish the meltagun marine finally, consolidating 5" toward his objective. His assault marines in the south kill 2 obliterators, leaving just 1 with a wound left. I kill 1 marine, and make all my fearless saves @_@ Abaddon rolls a 1 for his demon wep, making his save. He them gets kicked in the face by the dread twice, taking 2 wounds. serves him right... My power fist zerker glances, doing nothing.

I basically move everyone into assault range. My sorcerer splits from his zerkers, both moving up 6". M y vindi moves back 6" away from calgar.

Shooting sees the vindi clear the last honor guard off the table. The sorcerer lashes the Stormshield/TH termis 7" AWAY from my stuff.

In assault my last oblit dies, the marines consolidating 6" north. My greater demon wipes out the assault marines, saving my final plague marine (he failed to get wounded by both marines this round, whew!). The khorne zerkers face stomp the last sternguard, consolidating 5" to be within 3" of his objective. Abaddon immobilizes the dread. My last dread finally gets into assault, blowing up the dread and killing 3 zerkers -_- I consolidate toward marneus.

At the end of 5 we roll a 1 and the game ends! Chaos is successful in defending the portal, 2 objectives to 0!

Battle synopsis

What an intense battle! That very first turn I felt my odds of winning this one were pretty slim. I basically held out hope (due to terrain layout) of holding back Jesses forces by my objective and forcing the draw. I really didn't expect I would have done so well on the right flank, killing almost everything (tho I lost almost everything in the process!). This was my first game running chaos dreads and (thank god) they never crazed. However, being dual CCW it was a blessing and curse as they did NOTHINg til turn 5. Abaddon didn't do much this game, only managing to turn a dread into a cripple. However the psychological effect of abaddon with 8 zerkers by his side was not to be underestimated, it changed jesses "charge his objective" plan into "keep away from the scary guy". Overall I think this list (I was trying to run a good mix of everything) did well, though I don't know how many points Jesse ran (seems like more than 3k to me), its always fun to play him.
