Other,

A mix of all of the above, and most importantly my Guild (which I would have had as a choice myself.)

Tbh even as I approach the third year I've been playing the game (since Dec 2006) I still find it fun and a great game to pass some time with.

I also like collecting achievements, (not helped by the fact my Guild Leader started a Guild leaderboard,) I like seeking out Vanity pets (So much so I ordered the online stream just for Gurky) and I love rolling new alts (as can be seen in my sig.)

The main reasons however are the guild, and having fun with the game. Can't wait for Cataclysm and starting the game over with new twists on old locations as a Worgan.

You have a Jean-Luc Picard avatar and you're posting in the "video games" section of a website dedicated to playing wargames with little plastic and metal fantasy characters. Get a grip.

As for WoW, I play it because it's fun. With a good guild (the people you play with make or break this game, just like any other group activity) it's just stupendous value for money. Honestly, on a pounds-per-hour basis, I've obtained ridiculous amounts more enjoyment from wow than any cinema, minitaures game, other video game or even book in my life.

I don't play much nowadays (time pressures with work, sports and significant other) but it's still a good fun way to spend your time.

I think you need to keep those 'Troll' training wheels on for a little longer VermGho5t, your not doing it right.

Back on topic, another reason I play is because my wife plays, tbh thats probably a bigger factor than the Guild, as if she isn't into a MMO I won't play there without her, part of the fun is levelling up together.

I set personal goals like "how many levels can I gain before I die" or "which of my toons will defeat this boss the fastest".

The guild for me is a huge part of it. If I'm just out soloing I'll put in maybe 2 hours a day, if it's guild raid night I can log up to 6 hours (just depends on who has to jet out early).

WoW is loads better than WAR IMO; I like WAR somewhat but it has nothing on WoW, no MMO does frankly.

tried it. played it. left it.

i just don't like the elitism from which WoW creates, jeesh you go to any different mmo website and see the forums
enjoy your wow though, the new catalysm will absolutely destroy warcraft lore unfortunately since i played from the beggining (the RTS not mmo -_< ) and it had such cool fluff and missions!

I got dragged into WoW from a friend that was hardcore into it. We all finally stopped playing soon after we all did the 80 raids in Northrend.

After a couple years it just got a little tiring lol.

I don't play. When I want group activity, I go and hang with a few friends. I don't devote several hours a day to wasting my life on the computer and I won't ever.

WOW sucks, it has no story, and is for a bunch of pre-pubescent teens and little kids to go and spend mommy and daddy's money and do nothing all day.

I'd rather have my colon attacked by rabid monkies than waste my time on a piece of crap game like WOW. It is completely ruining the Warcraft universe and is a mockery of good video games.

End of rant, and no, dammit, I'm not trolling. I seriously loathe that game and most of the players. Granted, not all the players are like the "pre-pubescent teens and little kids to go and spend mommy and daddy's money and do nothing all day" kind.

No story? Man, you have zero idea what you're talking about, or you wouldn't try that argument. It has more story that pretty much any game out there, including most other MMOs. It IS the Warcraft universe, expanded, improved, and interactive outside of clicking units around from above; pretty much the antithesis of "ruining" it. If you hate the dweeb players, say so... don't paint your hate with such a broad and inaccurate brush.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

I mean, I get the 'more than most other MMOs thing', but more story than, say, Oblivion? Really? Or even something like CoD4?

Edit: I played for 20 levels as a Troll Rogue, then went back to DAoC. Quit that soon after, and switched to EVE, which lasted for all of 1 month. Every MMO I've ever played has been exactly the same, barring fanboi preference. The major issue is community wrangling, not actual game-play consideration.

I'm sorry. I have an idea what I'm talking about and I am trying that argument. I've played WOW and no, it has nowhere near as much story as pretty much any game out there.

Yes, I will concede the fact that it IS the Warcraft universe. Very astute observation! My hate for WOW is not painted with with a broad and innaccurate brush, but with a fine-detail brush.

But, I do not want this to degrade into a flamewar or trolling, so I propose leaving it at that.

I will abridge my statement to "most"; of course, I thought Oblivion was crap, so... *shrug*

Well, feel free to have your opinion; I can see by your gamertag what your opinion means, Halo 3 being the nadir of modern gaming.

When I played WoW, it was mainly to pass time, but I guess the game was pretty cool, just to hang out with my friends after school (About half my class played WoW, so yeah...)

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

well I had played WoW, a friend had no computer(relationship issues) so they let me have their account for a few months. played over a few classes just to see what I liked, but ended up lvling my human Paladin up to what ever level gives you mounts. though after that I just lost complete interest finding it just doing the same thing over and over again. it wouldn't have been so bad if I had a dedicated group to go around with, well needless to say when it came time to re-subscribe I backed out, giving all the proper info back to the friend. after a long break on Guild Wars and other game types(FPS,RPG, RTS) I got into WaR. WoW got me hooked onto MMO, so I got to thank WoW for that much at least.

That is gold. WoW can be a terrible grind. Learning new raid content can seem like a part-time job for sure. The community- well, not so much that- but my guild made a lot of it matter to me. I was fortunate to find a competent yet relatively casual group of players early on that had just as much of an investment in the game as I did while still keeping things sensible. We had some pretty good runs but I do not think a whole lot of us still play anymore because it is a huge commitment to keep going..

dogma wrote:I mean, I get the 'more than most other MMOs thing', but more story than, say, Oblivion? Really? Or even something like CoD4?

WoW has an enormous amount of content, and the lore of the Warcraft universe I think far exceeds that of anything Oblivion put to the table. I thought Oblivion was really underwhelming. Morrowind had a better story in my opinion that is presented in a similar way as WoWs, if you were to compare it to Oblivion. Morrowind did set you on a similar linear track but there was a depth to what was happening in Elder Scrolls III that you would not even touched upon if you didn't meet everyone or read the underlying lore and history books sprawled across the world. If you were willing to read the quest information and follow your progression in WoW you would really get a feel for the state of things and what is going on in the world - of Warcraft.

CoD4 was amazing, and short, and I do not know if it was so much a matter of having a better story than World of Warcraft as much as it is a matter of having a better means of presenting it to you. Its like apples and oranges. WoW makes for a terrible First Person Shooter actioner.

I enjoyed leveling one character to 80, but I have great difficulty levelling another. I've had the account for 4 years, but in that time I think it works out that I've used it for less than half of that. I usually play for a month or 2 at a time, and leave it for a while.

I have a Hunter that im leveling with pretty much pure PVP, and given that I havent PVP'd too much on my main its a bit of a fresh change. I prefer running dungeons or raids than questing, since I'm paying to play I'd rather be playing with other people.

Still, at least when I pay I know that I'm not going to be waiting months for a bug to be patched..

...oh,wait
