As the title says, how would a scout based army work out and is it possible?

I would think so. I mean scout troops, scout land speeder, I think it would work.

It would be an interesting but uncompetitive army.

One of my buddies is doing just this. Sadly he can't afford any models so I have to wait to see it completed, haha.

Have the models close enough to support each other yet far enough away to separate assault armies...

Bolters, Sniper Rifles, Heavy Bolters and Rokkits...

Would need a lot of cover and difficult terrain to be effective.

In 3rd-early4th ed. I had a Ravenguard-esque force that was scout heavy: scouts infiltrate with homers and assault marines drop in. It was fun but not especially competitive.

A variation that might be worth looking at is a 'first and ten' army (i.e. all terminators and scouts), but again, you're looking at a noncompetitive, 'fun' army.

I COULD see them doing well in a COD game, but that's the only venue where Scouts really hold their own, methinks...

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I see this as an "Arbites" force.

1 Question and 1 observation I would have:

1 - Who's your HQ(s)
2 - Your Fast Attack choices (where you actually have a few) take up the same slots.

Or you could just play Black Templars.

you'd probably be better off fielding a scout company in apocalypse... they have a formation there for a scout company, and you can get other companies in there for support.

Scouts are useful in certain situations, but I can't imagine a whole army of them. It would be kinda funny to watch your opponent's face as you infiltrate EVERYTHING in at the end of the deployment.

Well has nay one here though of having shrike lead the army? You can easily get a first turn charge with him. Get 6 10 man squads. ocmbat squad them to have sniper rifles and missle launchers in one squad. cc and bp in another with either a power sword or p fist in them. fast attack bikers in groups of ten with astart grenade launchers are a great harassing unit.

but yha it wouldent be very competitive.

Never say die! Never surrender!

Ok I did the math: you can fit 6 full scout squads in easy. You add a black-reach captain with relic blade, boltgun and articifer armor. Make one sergeant telion, and give every other sergent powerfists, meltabombs, and teleport homers. Give every squad either missile launchers, or heavy bolters with the hellfire shells. Give them all camo cloaks. That comes close to 1500, doesn't it?

Well, this army is rather immobile although the Scouts have move through cover.

Well, what you want with this army is to keep the enemy at arm's length if necessary.
If the enemy infiltrates too, it could be pretty close.

Not really, Lt.

Consider that guardsman are not T4, with 4+ armor, and do not have infiltrate and move through cover, as well as bolters and sniper rifles.

This is more like a middle step: somewhere around storm-troopers but not quite up to a regular space marine yet.

If you wanted to take a similarly equipped veteran squad as IG, You would have to pay extra for the doctrine for carapace. You would also have to pay extra for sniper rifles. Not only that, but you would be T3, with lasguns as the basic weapons for all the other troopers. Scouts aren't horribly priced when you compare them to veteran squads.

Yeah stormtroopers with BS3? Snipers with BS3? No thanks ... But it is interesting idea. I will write something not purescout at almost purescout. Expect that list in 11 hours because school is waiting

It could work with 2 Shotgun, 2 Bolter and 2 Sniper squads. 2 Speeders for shotgun ones, One bike squad, Telion, Some HQ, and Devastators ... (yeah they are not scouts, but you will have really difficult time against vehicle heavy list) ... It is looks like 2000 list but never mind ...

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Your imagination

It's the sort of army you need to be really good with to get by.
Also most enemies wouldn't expect that sort of list, which would give you an advantage, and (if your lucky) a lot of people would underestimate it.

Btw i have a list like this and i use Shrike as my HQ and you can put him in a nice and hard vangaurd squad, infiltrate them in with the scouts and do what that other guy said with the alternanting PFists and Missiles and youd leave 3 squads if you can sniping off the stragglers and stuff and break these into 6 combat squads works a charm

now i use that 1 above, but i like the idea of bikes and speeders and havent put them in because i cant afford yet lol

but its worth a try
good luck

Unlike most people, I actually recommend using Scout Bikers. They can have an invulnerable save better than their armor on turn 1, they get Astares Grenade Launchers, they aren't that many points, and they can infiltrate with scouting. They also have cluster mines.
