Subject: What should I buy?

Just got the assault on black reach set and was able to also obtain 5 scouts for a cheeseburger (best trade ever!)
Now what should I get next to round out to 1000 points or even 2000 points. I was thinking of getting a second assault on black reach set so I could field a ork army on the side, but I am feeling my SM are going to be underperforming with the units I get from there.
I am leaning towards a ambush/stealthy/quick force and am thinking that some dedicated melle units would be nice (jumpjet marines?) I am just fishin around for suggestiong and the best bang for my buck.

Battleforce is always a good move. I would get a Codex, and learn the game to a good degree, then make an army list for the point value you wish to play.
After that, look at the army list, and look at what you're missing. That's what you should buy =P
That and paint, primer, brushes, basing kit, glue etc.etc.

Lol I plan to get a codex asap for marines and possibly orks, I am filled out on the painting side (only thing I am missing is some green stuff for a few small flavor mods). Though I admit I do need to know more about what I can do with the points possible

Yeah. I would just go to your neighbourhood GW and watch a few games, see what people do, what scenarios you might face. But in most cases, a Battleforce is ALWAYS a good decisions, I would go with one of those regardless.

Honestly you probably should get another AoBR set and/or the battleforce. The battleforce is good value, the AoBR set even more so (although it's more limited). THe point is that you don't want to run out and buy some specialised unit like bikes or vanguard veterans or thunderfire cannons. Even if you are looking at a specialised force, you will always need 2-3 tactical squads, a rhino, that sort of thing. Bread and butter units, especially in the troops section.
So get one of the two sets mentioned, play a few games with tac squads, dreadnoughts and a single HQ. This is a great way to get to know the rules, and those units are really pretty good! THEN decide what sort of units you'd like to try playing with. Obviously assault squads and devestators are things you may want to look at next, they're not that expensive, they're plastic, and devestators are fully mix-and-match-able with regular marines.
Good luck, hope that helps!

Thanks for the advice all, I looked long and hard at both the battleforces and aobr again... Aobr is by far the better value and the only thing I am really missing from there is the assault marines (ya never know if I ever need a rhino I def get that pack). That and I want to have a orc force so its almost a no brainer.

You'll want rhinos for the tactical squads. Or perhaps drop pods.
I dont recommend taking foot slogging tactical squads.
You can start out without transports, but sometime when you expand your army I think transports are great.
People tend to not like Assault Marines, however I've had good experience with them. I do recommend taking ~10 of them, if your taking them, as 5 are too weak imo. But YMMV with them
But yes, AoBR is great way to gain the core of your army, be it space marine or ork.
The AoBR nobz are a bit lacking in the wargear section, so I'd recommend converting some power klaws etc.

Battle Force. That will Have you 3 Troops Choices (2 Tac, 1 Scouts) 2 Elite (Termies and Dread) an HQ (captain) and a fast Attack (Assault Squad)
Going by the BA codex and My (limited) knowlege of the Marine one (The only one I have), That is a fair bit over 1000 points.

For a starting army the battleforce is a decent addition, add a dev box to it you have something to add to the lonely combat squad
With how you want your army to play maybe hold off painting it for the BA codex in case they really suit how you want to play them (assault marines as troops etc).
For orks ebay another 3 coptas and you wont regret it, love them when I have used orks. The ork battleforce is a great set too, definitely worth buying a couple for transports, bikes and padding out the number of boyz there. as to what to do about the nobz maybe keep the AoBR as standard equipped nobz and grab a box set and painboy for different weapons as IMO those models really are worth the buy

So get the codex and start making lists before you buy any models. I recommend not buying another AoBR box (unless you really want to do orks) because if there is something in there you want there are ebay stores that sell the individual units at awesome prices. A cheep way to make assault terminators is to get the AoBR termies, then you order then thunder hammer and storm shield bits from GW. Look up the seller pfc games ( http://shop.ebay.com/pfc.games/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=) , that is the best deal IMO. When you're making these army lists you need to keep 3 things in mind.
1) Make SURE that you troops can survive the game AND arrive at the objectives in a timely manner. And of course make sure you have enough troops! (rhinos, razorbacks)
2) Have a very tough and hard hitting unit to deal with your opponents tough unit, or if they don't have one, to roll over the enemy and make them poop a little. (Ironclad dreads, assault terminators)
3) Have very fast reserves to contest objectives at the end of the game. (bikes, land speeders)
These things are important because of how the missions are set up. 2 out of 3 missions are objective missions which is what your army should be geared for. For the annihilation mission all you have to do is a King Leonidas says, "Give them nothing, but take from them EVERYTHING!" (300)
Cheers and good luck!

Thanks for all the advice, here is my planned corse of action looking over some codex and prices.
- Buying the Space Marine Battleforce boxset
- On of the regulars is going to sell me his ork half of his aobr set for $20 cdn (score!)
After this and some more experiance I may get some devestators for my marines and I been doing alot of research on making some homemade orks stuff for them.
I think I may purchase the hamer and sheilds for the termies I have (can I swap out the peices easily enough on em b/w games?)

yeah just cut off the snap on pegs of the AoBR terminators and glue the arms on... I think the bits come with shoulder pads but maybe not... would have to check that...

Oh and buying a dreadnought set would allow you to have spare weapons for your AoBR dread as well if you wanted to swap the melta off it. And 2 dreads in a marine army was always pretty effective for me .
For bits check sites that sell bits from the plastic kits too, might find cheaper than GW prices and to keep them swappable with an original setup theres the earth magnets or what I have done a few time, blu tac

I'd definately recommend picking up a second Rhino, or Droppod, or a Land Raider if you are looking to push 2000pts. Movement is key in larger games.
