Well, i've decided to start an actual wargame army, since I love the modeling/painting aspect. I got a couple questions.

Is there any reaon to play fantasy over 40k?
My favorite minis have an ice/winter theme, what fantasy armies can fit this well?

If you don't care much about the gaming, and mostly care about paint / model, then you should just focus on the models.

That said, 40k is better-balanced at the moment, so either take a "good" WFB army to protect against future changes, or don't bother with WFB.

Any army can take an ice/winter theme, depending on how you want to approach it.

What JohnHwangDD said, Except I would suggest a Warriors of Chaos theme, as they hail from the cold north

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Hmmm...

Any and all Cold themes.

Empire: Areas such as Nordland, which live near the north.
Dark Elves: An Army from Ghrond can also be ice-themed.
Beasts of Chaos: Living on both sides of the poles, it's more than feasible for these beasties to live in cold places.
Warriors of Chaos: They live north as well.
Dwarfs: High up in those mountains there's bound to be snow.
Wood Elves: A Winter-Themed Wood Elf Force is more than plausible.
Ogres: Living in cold, northern mountains should generate some snow/ice.

The main reason to play Fantasy over 40k is that in Fantasy, as long as you have solid tactics you should do fine, whereas 40k tends to focus on power-builds (Lash Prince/Oblit Spam, Mech-Based Armies, etc.)

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I happen to like Fantasy more than 40k at the moment. 5th Edition kind of killed it for me.

In any case, both are great games. If you have friends who play, ask them if you can borrow a small army to see what you might like.

For what it's worth, I have fun playing both, but I enjoy painting my WoC much more than any other army out there. Of course that is just a personal preference, yours will most likely be different and it might take you some time to figure out what it is. To me this is a long term hobby that I don't mind investing a few months of painting to realize I don't much care for that army and leave what I have completed on the shelf, sell the unpainted on eBay and start something else.

What I would NOT do is pick an Army based on its strengths. Well, okay, if you know you won't have fun without occasionally winning you should lurk around to figure out what armies to avoid. However, I would pick something that matches my playstyle over any strengths, and definitely something I enjoy painting. I hate seeing people get frustrated with the game because they chose an army based solely on its relative strength and not how it works with their play style.

Do some research, ask around here and your local gw shop, and have fun!

A winter themed wood elf army is very nice, and can be much more than just painting/modelling. Does the new book still tell about how the Wood Elves act in different seasons? A good side of 5th edition was the extensive background for the armies, and Wood Elves had a part about their King and Queen hibernating. Probably many tree spirits hibernate too... (yes, of course you kan have Christmastree-kin! )
Extending your theme to army composition also gives more story: it's the guys and gals that guard the hibernating forest during winter.

Night goblins look really cool in a cool winter theme complements their darker cloaks

I have been doing wh40k and am starting warhammer and to me it seems that warhammer is much more tactics during battle while 40k is take this build or your gone
