I couldn't say what you should do. Maugan Ra has quite a simpistic colour scheme. I do, however, look forward to seeing this project progress!

Hmm, good work so far, I suggest a little bit more depth, and glossy varnish at the end ^^.

Looks pretty good and arguably tabletop ready. Nice dry brushing work

I love the colour and shading you've achieved for the bone, but somehow the model doesn't 'pop'. Maybe bring the red out a bit with some bright highlighting? I'd also paint the flowing 'hair' from the back banner in a bright colour - probably red too.

The bone looks good, but it's very white, rather than bone coloured if you know what I mean. What was your process in painting it?

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Someone else has suggested another wash over the bone to make it look more faded (and to add depth). I'm trying to decided if I like my current "sitting on the beach for 2 years bleached white bone" or if I want to darken it up a bit. The gems will be glossed when they are completed, but thats all. I'm not a huge fan of gloss varnish on the whole model.

There's a lot left to do on this guy, gems, hair, loincloth, detail bits, etc. Hopefully he'll pop more when those are done :-P

Thanks, that's very helpful. I'm a beginner, working on a space marine chapter called the white panthers, and I needed some help with my black and white

for a beginner that honestly not to shabby. My only thing is I would go with black primer personally as white can be challenging to work with. It shows out way to well honestly if you miss anything

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Well I wouldn't exactly consider myself a beginner lol, but I do have my reasons for chosing white primer:

1. It makes the white much richer as you have the white base to start with.
2. The black can be painted with a set of 2 washes insted of several layers of dry brushing or hard highlights. Much easyer this way.
3. It will provide a nice base coat for whatever tirtiary color I chose for the tassle on his backpack. This color will need to be bright, and I dislike having to do white base coats over top of black primer.

very understandable and great reasoning on all that. I do look forward to seeing more of them.

Oh good, I was going to ask if your going to paint the hair, which you are.
So far pretty nice painting man.

I vote for Turquoise or purple for the hair. Both could be bright enough to stand out without conflicting with the colour scheme too much

Thanks for comments everyone, seems everyone is suggesting I darken up the bone a bit. For the moment, though, I am going to leave it. I want to see how it look after most of the rest of the model is completed, then I might darken it a bit.

Anywho, here's tonight's pics. I've done the tassel and the loincloth, as well as worked the red highlights up to blazing orange. Started on a few gold details, and did some fading from Tin Bitz up to Chain mail on the Executioner blade.

Also, "step by step" is up to 32 steps!

looks awesome so far - this is by far the coolest eldar model, IMO. The red and blue bits are especially cool, a straight bone/black scheme like the picture in the old codex is kinda bland.

It's going well, so it seems. I can see Asurmen though! Are you going to paint all of the Phoenix lords? BTW, the Executioner Blade is looking pretty sweet too. Keep it up!

Would you guys like to see a WIP thread for each one? For that matter would you guys like to see the whole step by step thing for each one?

P.S. Jain-Zar is on order!

Impressed that Baharroth hasn't fallen over. Is he screwed to the desk?

Yes, it would be great to see your interpretations for all of these. Good work so far!

Well he's almost done. Three steps left: Gluing him together, clear coat, gloss varnish on gems.

Heres some pics, anyone have any insight to get him any better looking before I finish him off?

P.S. I did do a very light devlin mud wash over the bones!

Sorry I didn't catcht this any sooner... Damn time differences!

I really do think that any more great changes may have a reverse effect on the model's quality. Basically, I think that it's looking good at the moment. However, perhaps some more definition around the teeth of the shoulder pad skulls may make them stand out a bit more.

BTW, a WIP for all of the Phoenix lords would be awesome, but that's for you to decide to do.

Keep on painting!

I'm loving the work on Maugan Ra, seeing you paint these has made me want to go and paint some Eldar myself at some point in the future.

looks awesome , but the blue cloth just makes it look very American flag like not that its a problem but it kinda sets a theme for the model you might not want . It would look great in red , black or , white as well .

Though the model still looks great .

I'm not too sure what you're getting at there. Why not a French or Dutch theme?

Well done on getting Maugan Ra finished! I especially like the warmth of the red Executioner Blade. Perhaps this isn't what's expected from the master of killing stuff, but I like it none-the-less. Seeing the Dire Avengers at the back, I suppose that it ties in with the rest of your force, though. Obviously, the bone is second best for me. It's not too dirty, yet neither is it too bleached.

I hope that this guy gets to kill stuff soon, dude... Have fun with him!

In mah workshop, paintin' mah Eldar

I like the chalky effect on the shoulders, and pretty much everything else on this model! I'd have a go at this myself, but Eldar metal models annoy me (especially the Harlequins. I spent about five minutes prising a Troupe Master off my middle finger).
