I was always told that you can't do this in a GW sanctioned event or store, yet recently I think I've seen posts here saying it is now ok to mix Lord of the Rings models, as made by GW, into armies for Warhamer.
Anyone clue me in on if this is or isn't kosher with GW atm?

Last I knew, for the past few years it's been okay. Probably because it's such a pain to try to police it.
GW's agreement with New Line just forbids them to publicize any pictures of people mixing the model lines, so they're not officially endorsing or marketing the idea.
Note that is my understanding; not an official quote of the policy.

I dunno how good it would look. The LOTR models are much shorter than the WFB models, and much less cartoony.

the normal man-sized models would be off but the monsters and weapons would still be cool.

From what I understand, LotR figs were strictly verboten at the Ard Boyz finals in Chicago.
I use the Balrog as the basis of my 'thirster, and a cave trol head & torso for my GUO. The tourney organizer told my buddy that I wouldn't have been allowed to use 'em. Had I not been forced to cancel at the last minute, having to drop sixty bucks on a greater daemon in order to play would have seriously pissed me off.
My understanding, though, is that this issue will go away when the license expires in the next year or two.

Other than the 40k & Fantasy Ard Boyz, sure... although, I imagine a GW store or battle bunker wouldn't let you use anything in a store event, either.
On the upside, I've yet to find a flgs that cares.

Most GW stores let little kids use unpainted models nowadays.. Perhaps battle bunkers wont let you but those places are massive. How could they possibly keep track of everything?

LotR models and mixtures of LotR/Wfb/ 40k are totally kosher.
Any TO or store guy taht says otherwise is talking out their arse.
The licence does not (and never did) prevent you mixing model and components.
In the eraly days, some overzealous twonk at head office thought it might boost sales to pretend it did, but they reversed the policy many years ago. Sadly some store managers and TO's don't realise this though.
Anyhow as proof I offer:
the 2008 UK LotR GT rulespack wrote:
USING MODELS FROM OUR THE LORD OF THE RINGS RANGES
Please note that at this time, due to the nature of our licenses, The Lord of the Rings forces that feature models or model components from our Warhammer
or Warhammer 40,000 ranges cannot be nominated for the Best Army Award.
If any of the other awards are won using an army containing models from Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 ranges, the army unfortunately cannot be
photographed or featured on the Web or in any Games Workshop publication.
While this is phrasing the limitations (i.e. can't feature photos of mixed armies in WD) the obvious implication is that they are totaly permissible in the competition.
QED.
Go tell the TO or whoever that prevents you using mixed models to go shove it! And tell him I sent yer!

It should be fine, but if you try to mix Orcs(LotR) with Orcs(and Goblins), it would be weird to see a night goblin larger than the LotR Orc Boss in the one army.

The scale is generally way off, but I've used the LOTR hobbits as halflings in more than one WFB game. The fact that GW doesn't make halflings any more plus the fact that the more recent ones look so lame, kind of forced my hand. Some of the LOTR figures are great for fantasy, especially the wizards and the Mouth of Sauron.
I've also snuck a few Wargames Foundry figures into my Khornate Horde. I'm such a rebel.

Not an aesthetic question btw folks, I was interested to see if the old rule (or wives tale) about not crossing the streams was still in operation.
