Subject: Space Marines -> what would you add to this chapter

So here is my currently fledgling Space Marine army
1 captian
2 tactical squads (20 marines)
1 combat squad (5 marines)
2 assault squads (10 marines)
1 scouts all snipers (5 scouts)
1 scouts snipers/rocket (5 scouts)
1 scouts bloter/sword (5 scouts)
1 dreadnaught
1 rhino
I cant recall how many points I get out of them but this is just from aobr, battleforce and a scout+assautl pack. Right now for my battles it usually consists of 2 scouts in cover offering ranged pressue with everyone else putting pressure on them baddies. Now what would you add next and why?

You should get another rhino and a razorback for your combat squad. Get yourself some heavy units. I prefer Vindicators but any unit will do. A common thing to do is to take a land raider and to load it with assault Terminators. Otherwise its pretty solid. You might look into getting yourself a squadron of land speeders too, good for contesting objectives on turn 5! I also recommend getting yourself the devastator box set, it has enough bits to make a whole 5 man squad and enough extra guns to trade out those mediocre missile launchers in your tac squads for some real fire power like las cannons or plasma cannons, though you have to a bit creative with the kit bash as I believe they don't give you enough arms for all the guns they supply. I feel that srg Telion is a great addition to a shooty scout squad, I wouldn't field one without him, he's just too good for the points.
Cheers!

I like to try to get 2 of everything. Cause one of something is not a threat, like your dreadnought. But haveing 2 of them makes them a threat.
But garklath is right, another rhino and a razorback for the troops at the least, and some speeders to harry the adversary. Although I woudl take typhoon speeders as they have range to take out light armor and troops and at the last minute can contest objectives.
But ditch the 5 man squad. Make it a 10 man with a rhino or attach it to the captain and make it a CC squad.
Otherwise its starting to be a good list.
Cheers

not... assault squads are amazing. I never leave home without one. Chuck a jump librarian in there, and you have an extremely mobile unit capable of handling anything up to (and sometimes including) terminators / nobs / bloodcrushers.

librarians in 5ed are not meant for CC.... period.
They are most useful with sternguard or with shooty termies
While Assault Squads are useful, their is such a thing as overkill and a waste of points. Its like having 5 rhinos and only 3 tactical squads. The rhinos may be good, but having more than necessary is unnecessary.

Generalian TAKE IT EASY! Hazal asked for help, not to be made fun of and ridiculed. I disagree with most of what you said AND your army list. I am short on time right now but will post again tonight to make my case. But Generalian try to be polite please.

What Generalian is saying is mostly right, BUT: he means that for a seriously competitive army, against players who also have built their armies very precisely. It's not as if you need to have a 'master plan' for your force just to walk into a store and have a pick-up game. Since this is obviously your first army, I'm guessing you aren't some tournament-going, number-crunching 40k devotee, who double-blind field-tests each unit before incorporating it into his army. You do not have to take things that everyone on this site agrees are terrific.
That said you might want to avoid units that are downright bad - for some reason, people who write the codexes don't seem to fussed about 'math' or anything, and some units are consistently worse than others. Scouts aren't too powerful, with their low BS and lack of really devestating weapon upgrades. You will probably find that once you have gotten a bit of experience at playing people who think things through and know the rules, scouts will drop from your line-up. Assault squads aren't bad, I'd use 10 men with 2 flamers as a single squad. Generally speaking, any space marine squad benefits from a rhino/razorback. Landspeeders, predators/vindicators are all good choices. Generally when people use land raiders, they use them to transport assault terminators, who are a really powerful shock assault unit.
Everything in Generalian's list above is good, for example. But that doesn't mean you have to use that list. As stated above, read the tacticas on this site to get a quick breakdown of how good or useful units are seen as being. Then play some games, look at your regular opponents, try and think what you need to take them out - do you need more high-strength firepower to take out tanks, some assault units, what?

exactly! thank you. I wasnt tying to be rude, its just that usually players ignore small talk unless you have reasoning. Which I tried to add, while sounding intimidating.

Sorry I overreacted. I still think that you were a little over bearing, and could have written that differently but I don't disagree with most of what you said. I just think that the game should be fun and as I-bounty-hunt-the-elderly said it's not about having the most competitive list. I admit I play a pretty competitive list myself!

yeah but you see... this is the internet... not real life.... in real life I look like this.
if I were directly in front of him or her... I would say something like this...
"What is this my good chap? Why so many scouts?!"
"My dear lad, let me show how to play these noble space marines correctly so that you might best every foe in this game we mortals call war!"
*2 hours later*
and that is how you win.
Then his hamster will be like this.

Look... i'm not here to rant, I am just telling you that if you want an army that will not lose every game you play, you should try other units that more effective then scouts... heck anything is better then scouts
Quick question... if you don't play againest people like me... where do you play? in some house with new 40k players? cause if you are going to a GW store or any hobby store that plays 40k. They would say the exact same thing.
BTW I loved sniper scouts back in 4th ed... but now in 5th they stink unfortunately, so do what I did and get some units that you know will be useful no matter what edition you are in. Like predator tanks, termies, bikes, and rhinos.
If nothing you need more armor based units.
