After doing the Malifaux commission, it's straight into the Space Hulk Commission I have been given.

The customer wants the Broodlord and Terminators to a nice high standard and the minion stealer's just TT

Having never painted a Genestealer I was looking forward to it.

Anyway here is where I have go to so far.



I am going to give the blue Chitin some battle damage to show a bit of age, how do you make Genestealers look old?
It' s not like they have a beard you can paint grey

Will put up the rest of the WIP, any comments along the way appreciated.

Looks good so far. To give the impression of age, I'd maybe have done the purple parts a bit darker. You could also make the claws look really gnarled with some dark scratches etc...

Amusingly, about 15 years ago my local GW had a tyranid player called Mike who used to put the 'Beardiest' (that's us old-timers word for cheesiest) army possible on the table. One afternoon, a friend of mine appropriated one of his Genestealers. I used cottonwool and pva to give it a nice big beard which was then washed black and heavily drybrushed with white

Mike played four full games before he worked out why we were all laughing at his squad of 'stealers.

Obviously not recommending you do this on a commission but, it didn't look half bad at the time

This loks trully murky, nasty and grotesque. I love it! Very crisp. Could still do with a bit more disgusting-ness... prehapse some slime...

The purple and blue look great, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of it painted. Um, will the head 'crest' be done in the blue too?

The only way to make him look old IMO is to give him lots of scars

Thanks guys for the advice, I plan do do scars and scratches. The purple does need to go darker. I have glazed it a coupl of times, but maybe need to do a bit more.

@Clang, yes the head crest will be blue. It's just I wanted to do the head first.

Terrific painting there, I love the colours and the neatness you have achieved, good work.

The Broodlord looks good, and I'll reiterate what others are saying that some darkening in spots as well as lots of battle damage will give the appearance of age.

The base detracts quite a bit for me though. I don't know if you are done with it or not, but the skulls need much more contrast, as does the rubble he is standing on.

Lol. no, no, the base is only undercoated. It only the Blue that is to the point, minus battle damage that is finished.

Looking at the mini, I am going to go lighter with the skin, having looked at a few things, it appears that as things get older they lighten.I may add some Liver spots too, but I will see how it goes first.

This is a very nice model, although the white for the skull base looks a bit plain.

Look a couple of posts above, the white is just an undercoat.

The blue is very nice, I love how the highlighting almost makes the chitin look metallic.

With a wash or two, the purple is also going to look great.

if you want to make him look old you could maybe slice some teeny grooves into the plates like he's been slashed a few times, and some chips in the bones around the edges, Maybe a bullet hole through one of the back plates. The new how to paint citadel tanks book has some eldar pictures of damaged wraithbone so that might give you some ideas if you have that

Very nice looking so far. I feel like the purple could use a little more highlight though. Keep pics coming!

It turns out he doesn't want it looking old now, as he likes it how it is :

ah well, I have one of these too, and I have really enjoyed painting something so different, that I will probably crack mine out soon, and do what I have suggested to it. 8)

Sorry it's been a while, been busy and not had time to take any pics. Anyway here is the next instalment. Unfortunately the lighting has killed the depth on
the skulls a little, but you will get the idea, albeit not the full effect.

I am going to add some damage to the helmets but this will be done when I do the metallics, yes I said metallics :lol: .

The red helmets add very nice contrast to the model. Well done!
