Subject: Genswick IG 1000 points + Pics from Dave Taylor's Original Army

Greetings everyone,
I'm putting together an IG army of Genswick Rifles based off of Dave Taylor's original rendering of the army, and I'd like to get the list set before I get too much further in the process. Most of the army is built, to a greater or lesser degree, but that doesn't mean that any fatal flaws can't be adjusted.
I'd like to see if anyone has any tuning up advice; I'm basically looking to have a list that is both relevant to the trench warfare theme but doesn't suffer too much by being "too fluffy". I'm hoping to soon put a blog up about the army's construction so any advice on getting this all set would be greatly appreciated!
HQ
- CCS with Astropath, Lascannon, and Plasma Gun: 115
ELITES
- Techpriest with 1 Tech Servitor: 60
TROOPS
- Infantry Platoon: 235
> PCS with Flamer, Meltagun
> Infantry Squad with Autocannon, Grenade Launcher
> Infantry Squad with Autocannon, Grenade Launcher
> Mortar Squad
- Veteran Squad: 175
> Shotguns, 2 Meltaguns, Demo Charge, Chimera
FAST ATTACK
- Hellhound: 130
HEAVY SUPPORT
- Leman Russ Executioner with Extra Armor: 205
That should put me up to 995 points. Hopefully reading this will prove mildly interesting and the resulting blog will be even more so!

Give me some details on the inspiration for the list... Genswick Rifles and Dave Taylor are unfamiliar to me... give me some links? Then I'll evaluate your list. From a competative standpoint: The chances of a plasma gun killing your infantry are high enough that I don't find them useful. Especially since you have a heavy weapon in the squad... you will never use the plasma gun. Not entirely sure what you plan to use the astropath for, it doesn't seem like the list to have any units in reserve. Not sure why you are mixing fire with melta, one is good for people... the other is good for vehicles, and BIG people. You won't use one where you use the other. Same goes with the squads in your platoon. Heavy weapons and special weapons don't generally work well together... the situations where one works, the other will not. It is a waste of points to mix and match. Mortars are nice, but all but ineffective against most things. I wish you luck with them. The Vets look good, however a little expensive. The Russ does not need extra armor. Why do you care if the Russ can move if it can't shoot? It is a Russ... it can barely move under full power. Save the points, drop the armor.

I'm not familiar with the background your IG army has, can we have a link or two?
I agree with Lt. Lathrop about the EA for the leman russ. Bad upgrade, apply the 15 points for a multimelta on the hellhound, or for some more guns elsewhere.
CCS will be better off with 2 special weapons, allowing it to move freely, or with a single heavy weapon, so it can stay well back behind the troops.
Is a techpriest really necessary? Perhaps it has something to do with your background, but it would only be really useful in a big list full of stationary tanks for him to repair. You have only one such tank, I would scrap the priest and turn him into plasma sponsons for the executioner.
With the points those changes save, how about giving the PCS 4 of the same special weapon, they'll thank you. Likewise, a third weapon for the vets would be great.
I'm aware this would be stretching things away from 'trench-fighting' as a theme, but the mortar squad isn't that great a unit, and it might be better to get a chimera for the CCS or PCS, allowing them to use special weapons at max. efficiency.
Can't say much more without hearing what the background is that you're trying to conform to. If it is trench-fighting though, wouldn't you be best off with lots of infantry squads and HWSs, backed by heavy artillery?

I would agree with the point about the astropath and the mixing flamers with meltas in 1 squad. However I would disagree on the other points.
AC and GL is a pretty good anti-personnel fit-out. increasing fire power as the enemy closes is always good. I get great utility out of my mortars. At the start of the game there are few infantry squads that can avoid their fire entirely and they can avoid cover saves from linear obstacles.
I would recommend replacing the astropath with a Master of Ordnance. Fits in with the trench warfare theme and gives you a good reason to keep your CCS stationary
With the PCS, either go tank hunter with 2 meltas or kit it out as a counter charge unit with flamers and power weapons.
Regarding the Russ you want to be able to move your russ when stunned in order to avoid the auto-hitting close combat attacks coming in on your rear armour. Russes are the only things I even consider giving EA to as they usually pick up quite a bit of interest.

My apologies on getting these pictures up, I needed to make sure it was okay to post from WD before putting them up. Here's all of the photos from Dave Taylor's Genswick Rifles from approximately WD 287 (I'm entirely unsure of the actual number since these pages are all I saved from it):
Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and chopped out the blatantly poor stuff and added some of the suggestions. I also added a Hydra and Colossus to the list while replacing the Hellhound.
Here's an updated version of the list
HQ
Command Squad: 100
- Lascannon, Master of Ordnance
TROOPS
Infantry Platoon: 240
- PCS with 4 Flamers
- Infantry Squad with Autocannon, Grenade Launcher
- Infantry Squad with Autocannon, Grenade Launcher
- Mortar Squad
Veteran Squad: 145
- 2 Meltaguns, Demo Charge, Chimera
HEAVY SUPPORT
Leman Russ Executioner with Plasma Sponsons: 230
Colossus: 140
Hydra: 75
That should put the list up to 960, which leaves some room for adjustments from any new suggestions coming in. Let me know what you guys think!

I apologize for bumping this up, I just wanted to make sure anyone who might have been interested in those photos got a chance to look at them. They are certainly inspiring for any trench guard ideas that might be flowing around, so I hope that helps.
Also, to keep on track with the thread, I was wondering if anyone ever used Hydras and how much success they had with them?

With the last 40 points you could:
a) add a commissar, if you're forming a blob his ld would be crucial. "Into the breach, you dogs!"
b) Kit out officers. Give that PCS Officer a Powerfist.
c) give your vets a 3rd special weapon. Another Melta would be nice.
d) do both B and C with
Just a few suggestions, hope this helps
-Lasfire Automatically Appended Next Post: e) give your veterans Demolitions and that 3rd melta. You get your demo charge, a spare melta, and 10 meltabombs.
