People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I'd go but the theatre is under renovation for another month and the next nearest theatre sucks so bad I wouldn't even go there to watch a Power Rangers movie (PR movies don't even deserve to be put on VHS).

I watch them for the puzzles, although they don't hold a candle to the gore fest that is Hostel.

I enjoyed the original concept behind Saw,and the first two or three instalments in the franchise were ok.
Now,however,I belive the "series" has just run out of steam, and are simply bieng cranked out because they (for what ever reason) continue to draw a crowd.
Personaly,I hope that this will be the final instalment,as I've never cared for sequel spam in the horror genre.

I hate splatterporn.
I despise it masquerading as 'horror' even more. To each his own but I found the first one boring and didn't bother with the rest.
I'd like to be scared again, the only 2 films in many years that left me feeling disturbed were Audition and Ju-on (The original Japanese Grudge film).

I agree that it would be "fun/interesting" to be actualy scared by a film again,I remeber being scared of films such as Jaws and Phantasam as a kid,but it seems that nothing really bothers me as an adult.
Now it seems I "deconstruct"most "horror, splatter, scary" films as I watch them and either feel A.nothing,B.bored,C.anoyed or D.entertained/interested,but as for scared, not for over 25 years...and I miss it.

I do like the Saw movies well 1 or 2 of them but I would'nt call them Horror, the word Horror get's thrown around alot these days, for me movies like Psycho (original Hitchcock version) and The Birds are classed as horrors as well as the genre defining original Nightmare on Elm Street, but the films that are released these day's just seem to be made for an MTV kids generation with saturated hues (Texas chainsaw remakes) and over the top sex and blood splatter, which for me is neither tasteful or a joy to watch..anybody with me on this or am just old?

I understand your point here, but in many aspects the "horror/scary" movie genre is aimed at the teen/twenty somthing market, and really has been since the 50's,sure they are some exceptions, like the Hitchcock classics you sighted, but by and large "horror"'s bread and butter are "young dollars".
To put it in perspective, when "I was a teenage werewolf" came out,it was considered "over the top and in bad taste",now it's a horror classic,This of course is not to say that films like Saw will be viewed as classics 30 years from now,but with shifting morals and perspectives, who knows.

You have a good valid point there, it's creepy how these movies have become more sexual and blood splattered and with the likes of Hostel just where will be stop? surely there will be a limit..

Well, the utilization of sex/death in the horror genre is nothing new,in 50's films there was always plenty monsters creeping around some lovers lane, and in the 60's, Hammer films, particularly Christopher Lee as Dracula plastered sex and death all over a technocolored screen, and of course the 70's and 80's saw legions of scantily clad, over sexed teens being hunted by mad slashers/monsters,this of course continues with todays Saw/Hostile films,it's a progresion of sorts,it's not that the overall idea has changed so much,it's just that the camera dosn't flinch much any more.

I guess my tastes lie in the Hammer Horror and other movies of the 70's and 80's, I can see the progression of it from 1970's boobfests to 2000's Torture/splatter porn movies, so where do you think this will lead to in the future?

I too love the old Hammer films, and would honestly like to see a resurgence of that type of movie, the upcoming remake of the classic Lon Chaney "The Wolfman" looks promising.
But as far as a complette demise of "splatter porn",I don't see it happening,to much of a market for it.

I think that's just it. We think splatter movies have too much sex nowadays but think back to the classics of the 50's; some of those horror movies had girls in dresses/skirts that would have been considered too short and risque out in public.
FFS, Elvis was considered pornographic with what he did on stage and now, in this day and age, what HS kids do at their dances would have the Elvis haters rolling in their graves (and how they dress as well).
I also think as adults it's also a lot harder (normally) to get scared. Poltergeist freak the hell out of me when I first watched it at 8 years old. Now, I actually yawn and laugh and generally don't pay much attention to it now. I'd love to be scared again but I don't think a movie could ever really do that to me now.

We are to close to this time period to be able to view it in context yet. I'm sure 10 or 20 years from now we will see it differently. Horror movies, perhaps more than other genres, really reflect something about their decade. I have no doubt that in the following years the connection between Abu Ghraib and the 'torture porn' will be thoroughly explored and dissected.
Now I wish I wrote a paper on that instead of just saying it out loud.

I can say though I have enjoyed the more recent remakes of classic slasher movies.
I really liked the Friday the 13th remake by Micheal Bay and Rob Zombies remake of Halloween (haven't seen the 2nd one as theatre has been under renovation since august) and TCM was good as well. Hard to get over Jessica Alba in that white tank top in that one...mmmmmm.

I think 8 out of 10 people on this board could write as good or better a movie. All it takes is a little brainstorming to figure some sadistic way of killing someone and how stupid the person is to fall into a trap while their character is being set up to be loved or hated by the audience.
Half the D&D games I used to be in had more plot than these movies.

actually i think if you were to put a Dnd session with a sadistic DM to film it would make a pretty good torture/horror movie
