Hello all,

I was hoping to get a question answered thats been bugging me, and causing some aggravation with another player.

When do you choose your Lore of magic? One player argues that you have to choose at the beginning of the Tournament, I argue that you don't have to until you roll for your spells, which is after terrain is placed but before deployment.

Now its not in the rules but complains that it is unfair that since I would know what my opponent this round is playing Dwarves, I shouldn't be able to choose the Lore of Metal, when I was using the Lore of Life last round against a wood elf army.

What do you all think?

Forever alone

The State Tournament here lets you choose your lores before each game.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I don't see why this is an issue. Each game of a tourney is exactly that, an individual game. You wouldn't go to your gaming club every Friday and be expected to use the same Lore every week for a month would you? The rules say to choose your Lore at the start of the game, seems simple enough to me.

If the tournament has a tournament rule that states you need to choose the lores in the beginning of the tournament then you should ask the organizers.

I’ve seen that interpretation before. The idea being that the lore selected is part of your army list, so would be fixed for the tournament.

That said, I’ve very RARELY seen that interpretation. It’s almost always “feel free to change each game”. If you’re unsure, ask the organizer. They are always free to rule it either way for their event.

I would imagine that you can pick your lore at the beginning of each game because depending on what army your opponent is playing you might want to use a different lore to help take out his army.

But it's still a fallacious idea, as the rules don't say you pick your lore when you make your army, they specifically state that picking your lore and rolling for spells happens at the beginning of battle.

But as he mentioned in the very next sentance "That said, I’ve very RARELY seen that interpretation. It’s almost always “feel free to change each game”. If you’re unsure, ask the organizer. They are always free to rule it either way for their event."

Tournament organizers are free to run their even ANY way they chose as its their event. Best bet, ask the organizer what their thoughts are. I've never ran into it at any event. However, if I went to a tournment and the organizer said to pick your lore BEFORE the event, i'd go with that, as its the same rules for each player.

Except that nothing in the rulebook addresses the concept of a tournament using a fixed list over multiple games. All the instructions about picking your army list ALSO assume that you do it before setting up for each individual game. If the tournament structure adds the concept of the fixed list, then counting the lore as another fixed choice in the list is not really that big a stretch.

In the Webway.

I doubt you have to chose a lore then at the start of the tournament and then have to use that lore throughout the whole thing.

That definitely seems like stretching the wording of the rules imho. It could be a house-tourney rule, but to say that's a straight interpretation of the wording in the rulebook seems out of line.
