Sounds like uneven enforcement. Everyone calls the inspector a bad guy until the haunted house burns down and kills a few kids though. They said they would be willing to help him gain inspection for the following Halloween, so I guess there just won't be any christmas this year.

Well, he had the electrics built to code, installed several fire extinguishers, and lighted Exit signs, so the idea that it burns down is a bit odd.
Still, nice overreaction.

Another victory for the fun Police, I swear that the health a safety culture has gone way over the top.
I bought some Stanley knives for work the other week and the pack has written on it "caution risk of getting cut".
Are there not more important issues these people could be concentrating on?

Yeah, because fire extinguishers are amazing for putting out a fire when the entire building is made of plywood. Still, nice of you to state that despite knowing next to nothing about the building and setup itself other than "He had an electrician do it" and "He has fire extinguishers". Oh, I forgot about the exit signs; best fire protection system available. Good on ya. Also good job ignoring the first sentence of my post, wherein I said it looked like uneven enforcement. You're a champ.

How is a temproary structure going to pass inspection?
What exactly are the standards of inspection of a temporary maze in a cul de sac?
Its bureaucratic nonsense. Let me correct my statement, its bureaucratic nonsense because the inspectors zapped them because they didn't get their usual payoff.

Did you still not read the first sentence of my post? I've posted it twice now. Here, I'll do it again in case you forgot you could read it Sounds like uneven enforcement.
Do you people just really want to argue with me? Or do you honestly think that the idea of taking both sides of the issue in equal measure is wrong of me to do? None of you were there, likely none of you were even in the state, it's not crazy to think that a plywood building covered in lights thats never been inspected and is primarily used by children could have issues. Seriously.

Yep, but that has me thinking:
1. Its not the city's business
2. What code is out there for this structure to begin with for them to say it doesn't make it in the first place?
3. What code would you use if your were a government nose picker, er high value employee?

Again, since there are other posters on now, what standards would you actually put in place-that they didn't-for culdesac haunted house getup.
I'll note they gave a cease and desist type item without even tryign to inspect it or work with the guys to make sure it was safe. What absolute bureaucratic pricks.

Sucks for the guy/family..especially given the fact it was, AFAICR, free for people to go into.
..but.. from the figures therein... with 2,000 people a year ..in a three day period.... given this is on private property would thrir insurance even cover any accidents that would occur ?
If it was just the 25 or so neighbours who signed the petition then this would be an overreaction, but even from the neighbours perspective it must cause problems when 2,000 people go that way in 3 days or so.
On the plus side it's a great CV for the guy, someone should snap him up ASAP, he must have good ideas.
EDIT : after pics... err... that's it ? Really ? Hmm.. guys been jipped a bit, but I guess he won't get sued anyway.

Meh. Municipal government do lots of stupid things. The town my parents lived in denied a major chain store the right to purchase property on grounds that their shipping vehicles would increase the number of children hit by cars.

I fething hate... municipal codes... they are next to slowed half of the time.
When you have a dozen different rules, all for the same thing, within 20 miles of each other... you know there is a huge problem.
When it comes to conctruction it is usually pretty straight forward; how about this though. In Berkeley, there is a code that says if your neighbor is blocking the view from your pretty little deck with a tree... even a tree which has been there for generations, but is not quite a landmark; YOU have to remove it. Not the neighbor with their pretty little view, YOU have to remove it. I mean seriously though, I am extremely surprised that people actually get away with this kind of thing.
Another thing in Berkeley; there is a Buddhist temple that has a meal service on the weekends. Not cheap, but it is for a good cause, that kind of thing. Apparently though, there was ONE family in the neighborhood that got tired of the smell and traffic. The smell of fantastic food, and good times... fething goddam bastards, and their good times. This one family, in a neighborhood with around 3 dozen families, managed to bitch and moan their way into cutting out nearly half of the time that the temple was allowed to stay open.
No one else complained... and in fact, they spoke nothing but good for the temple, and yes, these fething nitwits got their way. I freaking hate this snap...
