It appears that the stars have aligned and a FLGS has opened 15 minutes from my house.. . As such, my nids will be taking road trips once again but my current methed of lugging them around just isn’t working.
Right now I’m using a series of various tackle box trays stuffed in a duffle bag. It works but the hard plastic case combined with bumpy roads tends to cause a fair number of arms to break off at the glue.
I’m aware the various specialty products on the market (Sabol, Battlefoam, etc) but would like to hear from other nid players how they do it. My biggest challenge to using specialty products is that many of my models span several version of release. For example, as well as the current line of models I also have the old metal Carnifex’s, the metal Hormaguants, the old plastic termigants as well as a spider-like Tyrant slightly smaller than a Soul Grinder.
So if any nid players have found something that works well, I’d love to hear it.

I bought some large amounts of foam (in rolls), of varying thickness, and a large carrying bag/case.
I cut the foam into rectangles to fit into the bag/case. Then I cut holes entirely through sections of foam, in the size and shape needed for various models. I put a second layer of foam under the first and glued them together.
It works rather well for me, although I need to do it again now, as my collection is too large to fit anymore.

I actually leave most of my models at the store. I only take gaunts and my WIP pieces home with me. But then security is pretty tight where I am so very little chance of it being stolen or anything.
If this isn't really an option I would go with Kirsanth's idea.

I use a Citadel Army case for all the little gribblies and then I have about five or so Reaper figure cases with a variety of foam sizes for everything from Rippers to my Flyrant.

@kirsanth: Interesting idea. Did you buy the foam at a fabric store? Did you just use a hobby knife to cut it?
@RustyKnight: I didn’t know Reaper made cases I’ll check it out.

I found my nid models to be fiddly with foam. Too many spiky bits. So I went magnetic. One 3/16"x1/16" neodymium magnet per gaunt/genestealer and a couple 1/4" magnets for the big boys. Then they go in metal cases. They don't stick to each other and don't move during transport.

Yes, I got the foam from a fabric store. I used razor blades to cut it, because the foam is kind of mean to a nice knife.
I transport ~3k points of Tyranids for about $40, including the bag.
I need to double that, basically.
Thanks for reminding me - especially with the new stuff coming out. Automatically Appended Next Post: I felt the need to add, I use small boxes to hold most of the MCs. I use stips of left over foam to pad them so they do not move or get damaged en route - but 3-4 can fit per box without any issue. It was too much of a hassle to make a whole foam section for those models. It would also throw off the depth/height of the rest of the foam layers unless I made a whole layer just for them.

Oh... I mean buy a rubbermaid storage container (mine has wheels on it) and some eggcrate foam in the bedding area of department stores and you'll have all the room you need for easy transport and storage.

Definitely go with the aforementioned foam from Kirsanth.
It doesn't sound like you have storage 'space' issues, so the rubbermaid mentioned above combined with the foam means you should be able to transport it all.
For traveling occasions I am looking into a Battle Foam case, specifically because they have the FAA sizes for carry ons, and you can give them exact dimensions of your army for custom foaming.
Currently I am using an army transport bag, but the foam isn't as nice and does not quite fit my needs. I could just barely fit my 1850 tourny list in there.
I've also got a tackle box with metal bottoms, filled with hormagaunts and magnets. It works pretty well except... Hormagaunts tiny ankle structures are frequently weaker then the magnets pull to the steel. Then there's a random metal tin filled with foam for some metal figs, and the odd cardboard box with foam to fill out excess troops. All in all, I definitely need to be getting more foam soon.

I only have 15 CSM, chaos rhino and a chaos lord with terminator armour so I use a simple wood box (I used to use it for bringing my paintinfg stuff), but I put cotton into it, for protection.
