For me, I have found that "Codex: Space Marines" very poorly represents the original 20 Legions, both Pre and Post Heresy, with the exception of the Post Heresy Ultramarines and Imperial Fists.

I have always thought the Iron Hands are much better represented with the Space Wolf Codex, and that Raven Guard are better with the Blood Angels Codex.

What do you guys feel?

I think the Raven Guard/Blood Angels comment fits, but I'm not sure where you are coming from with the SW/IH thing.

Iron Hands do not follow the codex at all. They are very Mechanically enhanced (so can carry more weapons/use True Grit) and operate in a "Clan Structure". Blood Claws do not fit into their theme true, but Grey Hunters, Wolf Guard Terminators and Long Fangs are very much "Iron Hand-sy"

And Iron priests too. A Friend of mine used 2 Iron Priests with the old codex as Veteran Techmarine Leaders. Dunno what he'll do now they are not IC's anymore

I suppose they are. I will say that I did like the way the Iron Hands were set up in the 4th Edition book, too me that seemed to fit them well.

Terminator sargents is all I can remember of Iron hands, wolf codex has that so yeah I think they fit better.

Agree with the raven guard comment.. except death comapny would be what?

You'd just leave the Death Company out of it or explain them as Marines the geneseed has gone haywire in like when Corax made the clones.

Indeed it is Mekboy, but if you were to use BA as RG and you wanted to use Death Company you'd want a good reason for it right?

Well IIRC you dont actually have to take Death Guard so...

I reckon Codex Space Marines best represents the 20 Legions, although a similar lay-out could be achieved with Codex CSM so maybe them, also with Codex CSM then you get the now god specific units...

Pre-Heresy though it's definately the Space Marine Codeeeex

The eye of terror.

I think SW represents both SW and World Eaters well.

Night Lords would be better represented by the SM or Blood Angels book (I think that Shrike is a very night-lordsy special character, with infiltrate and flying around and everything).

Alpha Legion? They're damned resourceful, let them use whichever codex they want =D Sometimes they like to raid imperial stores, so they could be "codex" but I could also see them allying with a chaos god to achieve specific goals.

Word Bearers? Chaos for the daemons I guess. Has anyone thought of using a "counts as" Fabius Bile to represent a Dark Apostle instilling fanaticism into his battle-brothers?

Iron Warriors? Eh... either Chaos or Codex, but I don't think either does a super job.

Emperor's Children? I think the Chaos book does a great job for these guys, despite the lack of sonic weaponry on vehicles and devastators.

Black Legion? Chaos does these guys justice, which it should because they are the army that the book is based on!

Death Guard? Chaos does this OK, but just because plague marines are so solid, and nurgle princes are one of the better HQ choices.

Thousand Sons? Chaos is pretty much your only choice, even though they are the red-headed step-child of the codex.

I've been playing Chaos for a lot longer than anything else... but people can remind me if I missed something!

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

I'm thinking that the new Space Wolf Codex can work very well in making pre-Heresy marine lists...

Space marine codex represents all of the legions the best. No one rides giant wolves.

true, but in Alpharius' defence, you dont HAVE to ride on those giant wolves...

on the subject of Alpharius, I reckon the Alpha Legion would be best represented by Shrike as he allows infiltrate, fleet and such... IMO

Lol. Yes, because Space Wolves are not part of "All the legions".

I'd love to read a black library novel where space wolves were actually riding around on wolves. I bet C.S. Goto could pull it off. The special codexes turn chapters into caricatures of themselves. That's why the space marine codex represents everything the best.

BAT-TROLL be careful! I think this one maybe be trying to egg you on.

Tempting fate as I may be biting the other trolls bait, but I really don't see where you're coming from in thinking that the Vanilla Dex best represents Legions who each had and some still have their own way of doing things
