I just recently decided to get into this sort of thing. I bought a bunch of Necrons at my buddy's recommendation. Ye gods they take forever to paint, but OH WELL.

If you are painting necrons in regular metallics, it shouldn't be too bad. If you are trying to paint non-metallic metals (a super advanced paint technique using regular colors to simulate metallic objects for those who don't know the jargon) then yeah, strap in cuz you're in for some chop!
