So yeah. Lately I've been interested in starting a Mechanized Salamander army and began reading through fluff and what not. Then I came upon the anatomy page of a space marine...So I knew some of the organs were outrageous, but I'm guessing the writer's just wanted to make the more awesome...somehow with the spitting acid, eating anything they want, and etc. However, there's one thing that bugs me...the Ossmudula. For those who are too lazy to read it up or don't have a codex handy the exact writing is: "Ossmodula - The Ironheart
This small implant made into the lower part of the brain
affects bone growth. As a result, Space Marines have a
tremendously strong and fast-healing skeleton and their rib
cage is fused into a solid protective shell."

So see any problems? No? What about the fact that instead of multiple ribs they have all of them fused together into one huge ass piece of bone? Still don't see the problem? How about how the feth do they bend over properly to take cover and to pick up gak? I meant it also limits how far you can twist around. Seriously you try turning your body only using your lower back or bending down comfortably and such. I know it's possible, but doesn't it limit their upper mobility by like a lot? We, as well as every other mammal, evovled with multiple ribs and not a bone shield shoved in our chest for a reason amiright?

It's special bone. Probably altered to be more flexible or something.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I think their armour would probably stop them bending over to pick up any coins anyway. Why not just fuse the rib cage and make breathing imposible while they're at it

Also Space Marines don't need cover, they just have to yell loudly and run at the enemy. Long ranged heavy weapons squads included.

I always visualized SM's ribs looking like a roman's loriga segmentata, with borader ribs that overlap themselves like the armour's lamas.

I voted no. I don't think having a huge ass bone plate in place of flexible ribs is a good idea because you'd have a hell of a time breathing.

It's probably not a solid mass of bone, rather a mass of bone and cartilage that is less prone to breakage but still flexible.

I think it's probably segmented and held together with cartilage or somesuch. Either in horizontal strips or down the middle. Besides, they have a third lung (and, IIRC, four in older editions!) So I imagine their lungs wouldn't need to expand as much to take in the same amount of air.

Also since their frames are so much larger to begin with, they really have plenty of room in there. However it works, i think its safe to say the emperor figured it out well enough.

If it breaks (yes SPESS MARINES dont break but IF it does) then you have a fuckload of bone shrapnel inside, causing a sure death.

However since they are super ultra mega bio designed they probably made semi flexible yet tough (kevlar anyone?), and power armor already limits their movement a lot.

As for their lungs having a harder time getting air, they have 3 LUNGS!!! not to mention since all their muscles and bones are stronger, then probably their diaphragm is way stronger too so it compensates.

Waaagh!

i reckon its like a series of bone plates, like roman armour, but more organic looking, it would provide protection as well as allowing for alot more movement

It's best not to take the phrase "fused into a solid protective shell" too literally, although since it doesn't say "solid bone shell" it's possible that you're reading too much into it.

I guess I tend to see the flaws of a statement rather than think of a creative solution first...still...on another note should space marines without helmets can another attack for spitting acid? xD

SPIT IN THEIR FACES!!!

It would allow a purposefully fluffy reason not to wear helmets on your Space Marines.... cause seriously, why wear all that armour and not put on a helmet? Safety first, boys!

Clearly to grimace at the enemy and so that they can hear you better :U

But yeah...with all that training they choose not to wear a helmet?

It is simple. The more important you are, the less need of a helmet you have, cause your baddassness deflects bullets

It's a very accurate system; you'll notice that many Sergeants are wearing HALF of a helmet.
