40k's 'signature' army is undoubtedly the Spehss Marines, but what about fantasy's.
I would probably go Empire, but what do you guys think?

Well, I think that there isn't really 1 army that is signature. You have to realise that GW's Warhammer was based on Citadel's Battlesystem, which revolved around the D&D world. I think that the Orcs, Dwarves, Elves, BoC, and Humies are all part of that signature.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Isn't the God-Emperor of Man in 40k like the futuristic version of Sigmar? I'd definitely have to agree about Empire.

I would say that it is Chaos.

Chaos started in Fantasy, they are the most popular line, and like space marines, everyone will own one at one time

15000 - Tyranids
4000 - Skaven
1500 - Dark Eldar
2500 - Daemons
1500 - Necrons

I'm not saying they're the same guy or anything stupid like that. I don't want to get into a lore war, but on a very general level..

are they not both religious figures of a large, mostly human empire? Founder and/or savior of said empire? There are a lot of books about the Empire and about Space Marines/Imperial Guard, no? Is that not enough for someone to reasonably suggest that maybe both primarily human, monotheistic, as-close-as-you-can-get-to-"good guy" armies could be GW "signature" armies?

If you got a different idea of who's the signature army, or if there even is one, Eddy, please do share!

Sorry hivefleet I have to disagree with you that everyone will own a Daemon army at one point and time. Myself Ill never own them in WFB or 40k for that matter and most people in my area dont play daemons and if they do they never bring them to the store for a game.

Back on topic Id have to go with Orcs and gobbos as the signature army, everyone I know played them at one time or another.

I agree with you, the human Empires in both settings share many features that define them as faction.

Moreover, it has often been hinted at that Sigmar is one of the lost primarchs that got cast into the eye of terror... Read his myth and a few 40k primarch biographies and you'll see lots of paralels.

OT: Chronopia really ripped-off the Holy Emperor idea with their One King... And also the Horus Heresy.

Orcs and Goblins are the signature race of almost ANY fantasy faction :p

They are a rather dominant race in the fluff of WFB (by Sigmar! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!)

But the fact that the game is called Warhammer and the Rulebook sports the Imperial Heraldry points in the direction that the Empire is the Signature race. As far as human factions in medieval fantasy go, they're pretty unique in their style/appearance. In most Fantasy worlds, humans are Nordic, late Roman or Arthurian, renaissance factions are minorities. In WFB it's the dominant human faction.

apparently Daemons are now the only Chaos army you can play?

Chaos as a whole. The front cover of the first Warhammer rule book had a chaos warrior on the front. Cant get much more than that really?

The portrayal of Chaos is unique too. It's somewhat deeper than just "the guys in black armour are evil". It also defines the background of both games. Yeah, all Fantasy/SF have their Dark Lords... in GW games it's just... different...

unfortunately, Chaos has lost a lot of it's character. It's rather organised now. Oh, where are the times that you could have a mix and match horde of deamons, warriors and mutants (with deamons of rival gods suffering animosity) and your own little magic phase especially for you, you little chaos boy.

The Empire is the race that ties us, normal, real humans to the setting... supposedly. The 6th edition about the (Illiterate) race's books featured a lot of Imperial Scholarship.

i agree that there doesnt seem to be a favorite although empire, orcs and goblins always seem to be early army book grabbers.

Pretty obvious since empire has the most plastic kits just like space marines

Orcs and goblins seem to make it into a lot of starters and have a lot of plastics, but Elves have three subtypes.
Emo Elves, Hippy Elves and Snooty Elves.

man i still have the rulebook for that game, i remember the dwarves in that being bad ass
i would say that its not the humans that are the focal point of WFB itself, but the land of the empire, most things resolve around it, seeing as apart from the evlen nations nothing much is known about locations outside the old world. but i think the most played started army is orcs and goblins though

Relictors: 1500pts

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

true, sigmar and the emperor are similar in many respects, acting as a deified figurehead to a giant empire

OT: empire is really not the signature army, purely because there is so much choice within it, not just in terms of plastic models, but also tactically and the units you can get and combine, etc etc, the main feature of a signature army seems to be fairly limited choice in terms of specialised units, so you have many units that do many things annnd they are big and easy to paint..im not a fantasy player so i dont know who would fit that bill

Now, with that being said, isn't Empire the perfect medieval twin to The Imperium?

You try to argue against the statement with arguments in it's favour.

why would a signature army be limited? Does it need to be? Why? Even an army with great variety can have iconic troops.

I would place it at Empire as the poster boys of the WFB. O&G are a close contender I would say or Skaven since they love those cooky little ratmen.

I would say Daemons since they're both playable in both systems.

And Chaos in the Old World in such a BAD ASS GAME!

Sorry there buddy you'd be mistaken. You need to look at the ranges and support and how long those armies have been around. A all Daemon army is a new thing to the Fantasy land keep that in mind.

Most newbs have started to play them because it doesnt take much time to master.

I see there are a few Signature armies in Warhammer world

Orcs & Goblins
The Empire
Dwarves
Mortals of Choas

Heroquest was the game that turned me onto warhammer.

Well, yes, Empire is supossed to be the sig army with all the unnecessary stuff, but other armies have come out more popular. Therefore, the is no sig army.
