I've heard conflicting things on this. Now it seems GW thinks they're completely separate, although back in the day, maybe not so much

My only real experience is playing marines in 3rd ed, and nids and tau in 5th, along with starting high elves for fantasy. Some older players probably remember more of what GW was originally thinking about the two games.
